Dumpster Update: They Built A Covered Shed To Keep Animals Out

Saw these two back in April, same old same old. Cant teach people to close the lid to quit attracting gulls, raccoons and rats

This one I saw someone from the do-no-wrong Grove Market emptying garbage and walked away leaving it open.

And down the street at P.G. Juice N Java – yep. A gull’s buffet.

What can we do? Let’s build the kids a playhouse to hide the trash in. What do they do? Yep, leave it open.

Dumpster Update: They Built A Covered Shed To Keep Animals Out

Gulls Like Ben Harvey But He Does Not Like Them

Harvey sees the one time the trash is covered. Here are three other time I passed by the mentioned location. He’s also bothered by the squawks and cries of the gulls, but not the smell of the open garbage next to his part time residence?

City Manager Ben Harvey, clad in a baby blue sweater over a white button-up shirt, strolls down 16th Street with a cup of coffee in hand. It’s early afternoon, and while there are still no gulls around, Harvey stops between Fandango Restaurant and Grove Market, and turns to face a dumpster area.

“This is what I am talking about,” Harvey says, visibly annoyed, yet composed.

Harvey takes a few steps toward a nearly empty parking lot in front of the restaurant, and points to a big, black dumpster with its lid shut. The container stands next to a small trash can filled with a tied-up garbage bag.

In addition to using predatory birds to scare off gulls, part of the program would also include stepping up enforcement of dumpster lid closures.

Pacific Grove To Unleash Birds Of Prey On Wildlife And Drones To Spy On Rooftops

All this over gulls while a major contributor goes unchecked.

Business property owners have until Feb. 20 to remove the birds’ nests on their buildings or face fines and penalties.

To help make sure owners are in compliance, the city plans to send drones to record video footage of business district rooftops in a search for nests.

The drone-and-raptor plan was the brainchild of economic development director Mark Brodeur, who also happens to be in charge of vector control.

“Sea gulls are essentially flying rats,” he says.

(City Councilman Rudy Fischer) said the city has already dealt with the “easy food” that tempts gulls by modifying downtown garbage cans.

“The gulls are getting aggressive at restaurants and pooping everywhere,” Fischer said.

Restaurants are attracting the gulls by not following health department rules. They need to be penalized with fines and made to pay for the cleanups.

One can take a walk and see the local businesses that have no respect for the town they operate in:

Seagull Summit Declares Problem Is Solved

The gulls that are mucking up downtown are not Sea Gulls, but Western Gulls. Y’all aint got a SEAgull problem, pardner.

Woohoo Gull

The hot topic forced the meeting to move from a small, Jewell Park meeting room, across the street to the museum. That’s where museum executive director Lori Mannel set the record straight. There is no such thing as a sea gull, she said, explaining that the circling, squawking hordes over Pacific Gull are Western Gulls — never found far from the ocean.

Anyway, readers of LighthouseAvenue.com no doubt can recall back in 2009 when the Dumpsters Of Commerce story was posted to illustrate my opinion that downtown’s bistro owners showed little respect for the town and it’s citizens. The constant violators from back then were checked recently and (surprise!), no wide open trash receptacles.

Holman Hotel Host To Walgreens?

Sounds good on paper. A Walgreen store would not step on to many blessed businesses that oppose anything that would compete (Grove Market, Fandango, Pollacci Liquor & Date, etc). But if Nadir is in the mix, I predict failure.

Walgreen Holmans

The first floor of the Holman building in downtown Pacific Grove could become home to a Walgreens pharmacy — a large retailer that could bring a boost to local business, according to the city’s chamber of commerce.

Agha’s plan for a 300-room hotel, which the developer has pursued for years, would still be possible even if the building’s first floor is leased to a retailer. Currently, the 60,000-square foot-space is occupied by antique dealers, a bank and a restaurant.

There’s lots of concern over carbon emissions and other mythical hazards, but still there every day, putting real health hazards at your feet (and hands, arms, head etc) is the healthy seagull population. The gulls are well fed by the downtown merchants (and even the city this year) that leave garbage uncovered.

We can always count on Fandangos on 17th Street to leave the finest garbage out in the open

Coyotes Must Read This Site – Come For Free Meals

Wile E Coyote Appetite

The Pacific Grove Police Department is reporting an increase in coyote activity in Pacific Grove.

In the past several weeks, people have reported a number of coyote sightings and most recently coyotes attacked and killed a dear in the 600 block of Balboa, police said.

According to police, coyotes are prominent in the Central Coast region and it’s important to remember the following:

Do not feed coyotes.

Eliminate sources of water, particularly in dry times of the year.

Secure garbage containers.

Feed pets indoors whenever possible and pick up leftovers if feeding outdoors.

So many free meals – open dumpsters everywhere!

Gulls and pigeons. Crows. Rats. Raccoons. Scavengers finding a free lunch and using Pacific Grove as a toilet. When will the merchants show that they care about P.G. more than for the money they rake in? If this is how they take care of their trash, how clean do you think the kitchens are? Are the food storage containers covered? Is the floor clean?

Pictures are totally unrehearsed. Examples are exactly as they were found. No laws were broken obtaining the pictures.
