Surfer Rescues Kayaker At Asilomar

Tyler Scheid from Carmel is the hero.

As Scheid paddled out, the kayaker tried to reach shore but the kayak capsized. Scheid said he paddled over to the man, got him on his surfboard and paddled to shore.

Scheid said the man told him he had been out on the water overnight because he couldn’t make it through the surf to shore. Fire department personnel gave him aid. Scheid said the man was hypothermic and dehydrated.

PG$E Changing Streetlights To Bright LEDs

Remember these tall majestic street lights?

LHA Sprouse

Constant state of change. Last switch was from the sodium vapor to magnet induction where we traded orange tint for more radio frequency emitting into the air.

Who pays for the fragile year round tree lights? Mayor says “we” replaced the blue tinged ones as soon as people complained.

The LED lights I see are narrow-beamed. Is the spacing of the lights being taken into consideration?

See the examples at:

  • 515 Junipero Ave
  • 77 Asilomar Bl
  • Forest Grove school

While Pacific Grove Mayor Bill Kampe acknowledged the lights’ greater efficiency, he also noted that complaints about LEDs usually center around the uncomfortable colors some of them have.

“There are LEDs of all colored variance,” said Kampe. “So it doesn’t mean that if you’ve seen one you didn’t like, you won’t like others. There are different color temperatures.”

Kampe cited the LED lights draped over and lining the trees in the center of Lighthouse Avenue in downtown Pacific Grove as an example. When they were initially installed, residents complained they were too blue.

We took them down and put up a different LED light — a softer light that was more suitable,” he said.

For his part, Kampe’s biggest complaint was that PG&E hadn’t done its research in terms of what lights are suitable for different places in the city.

“They’re bringing a one-size-fits-all program and haven’t done research as to what lights might be better,” said Kampe, noting that in residential areas, softer lights are generally used while busier, more commercial areas generally require brighter lights.

Pacific Grove’s McDonald’s Closed

Other locations are close (permanently)

We Are Close

Thought to be the slowest McDonald’s in the world but it held on.

In 1995, the city adopted a ban on any “formula fast food” establishments coming in, but the four existing fast-food spots were grandfathered in and allowed to remain. Today those spots are occupied by McDonald’s, Subway, Mountain Mike’s and Domino’s.

Moammar discovers the secret of PG’s business areas south of Sinex and will help kill that too, undoubtedly.

“It attracts people from different walks of life and has the most diverse group of people because it’s affordable,” said Ammar, noting the many times he’s seen the restaurant packed with senior citizens in the morning having coffee. “Last week I must have seen 18 different groups of people in there ranging from children to teens to construction workers and seniors.”

Why Are There More Sharks In The Bay?

Think about it when seeing all those sea lions having babies on the fenced off shore.

Hungry Alien Sharks

David Ebert is the executive director of the Pacific Shark Research Center based at Moss Landing Marine Labs. He has participated in several programs, most recently working to catch and tag a megamouth shark in Taiwan.

He believes the Marine Mammal Protection Act has somewhat helped the shark population. More marine mammals for sharks to eat means more sharks.

Guarantee a very long term lease or they take the building, pilings and pagers and leave. My feelings are that 50 year leases are OK if the business remains the same. Any new owners or name changes should end the lease and require a cancellation fee.

Recently Shake requested a demolition permit to tear down the building when its lease expires in summer 2021.

“For five years we have been requesting for the city to extend Chris’s lease,” said Tony Lombardo, the attorney representing Shake.

“The Grotto has been a tenant since 1959 — it’s the best tenant the city has. They pay the city far more than market value while Shake’s business generates one-third of the income the city gets from the wharf.”

Lombardo noted that Shake currently pays the city $250,000 per year to essentially rent a 4,000-square-foot property. The Shake family has always owned the building and the pilings underneath it and has been fully responsible for its maintenance, Lombardo said.

City Says Bruiser The Pig Must Go

I am surprised that he Hanes’ have not used the “emotional support animal” excuse that was used to keep a miniature horse in a residential area of town.

neighbors who live next door to Bruiser said it’s been hard to deal with stinky smells caused by the pig for the past two years.

“The smell is entering our yard and kitchen and dining area,” Ray Magsalay told city officials at a hearing held to determine the pig’s fate.

Lisa Hanes and her husband, Mark Hanes, said Magsalay, “has made this a mission to get rid of our pig.”

In January 2016, the city issued a compliance notice asking the Hanes to remove feces from their property. The Hanes said they built a pig pen and cleaned the yard more frequently.

In May, however, city officials decided that the owners are still out of compliance, and requested they get rid of their pet by June 20.

City Leaders Still Calling Citizens Names

In the ongoing controversy of a citizen with a pet pig, elitist city leaders call them “pig people” just like Runaway Mayor Dan Cort called a resident a moron.

Homeless Pig

Hanes also said it’s the way the city has handled the situation that has she and her family upset. According to Hanes, the city has tried to build a case against the family and referred to them in a derogatory manner, labeling them the “pig people” in some of the city correspondence. Councilwoman Casey Lucius has even spoken up on behalf of the family.

Zero Net Change

Bike stations would be located at places such as Middlebury Institute of International Studies, the Naval Postgraduate School and the Presidio of Monterey.

Councilman Alan Haffa was very supportive of the program, noting that his students at Monterey Peninsula College were enthusiastic about it while Councilman Ed Smith had concerns that people wouldn’t spend money on such a program when they can purchase their own used bike for a reasonable cost.

The city on Tuesday also approved its Climate Action Plan, which has been in the works for several years.

This makes sense – more bicycle riders exhaling more CO2 into the fragile atmosphere. Bicycle riding is causing global warming.

Rudy Fischer Jumped The Gun – Quits Bid For Mayor

Fischer has lived in PG for 6 years and is on the city council. He hopes to be mayor in 2 more years. Proof that Pacific Grove is becoming a town of transients lead by transients.

In an about-face, Pacific Grove City Councilman Rudy Fischer has decided he won’t run for mayor in the upcoming November election after all.

Fischer said his intentions were never to run against Kampe, simply because of their agreement on many of the city’s current issues and noted that he filed his candidacy papers at a time when Kampe wasn’t yet certain he would run again.

Fischer, who has been a Pacific Grove resident for 6 1/2 years, said he definitely plans to run for mayor in 2018 and said he already has the funds to do so.
