Country Club Gate Tobacco Shop Heist

Country Club Gate is always a hot spot for crime. Merchants that have a lot of valuables need to install cages over the windows and doors just like Seaside. Too bad P.G. can’t keep enough police on the beats – I mean there’s more DEI matters than criminal investigations there.

Due to staffing constraints, police explained they cannot maintain constant contact with victims of property crimes.

They canvassed the area for surveillance footage, including from nearby Lucky’s and local flock cameras, but were unable to identify any suspect vehicles.

The store owner is reconsidering future business investments in Pacific Grove, stating, “But after this, that’s kind of demotivated me. You know why I’m going to bring my investment here and add more to the city where my assets are not safe. A lot of my business is not safe at all.”

Other nearby businesses are also concerned about the safety of Pacific Grove, with one local business owner, George Daoud, saying, “Mean, this is P.G., couldn’t be any safer than that. That’s I mean, we pay prime price for safety here. We do pay for that. So we’re not seeing it, and we’re not feeling safe around here.”

P.G. Bike Safety To Be Enforced

First, we need some cops to fill the vacancies.

PG911 Bike Patrol

“E-bike concerns and safety have been a priority of our Police Department for some time now, especially concerning our youth,” said Mogensen in a separate email.

A Public Records Act request with the city found that in the three-year span from Jan. 1, 2023, to Dec. 31, 2025, police issued zero citations for the municipal codes related to e-bike regulations. KSBW reached out to the police department for comment, but a representative from the department said they would not comment ahead of the city council meeting.

A review of the 2024 Annual Report produced by the police department, the most recent one available at the time of publication, showed that the police department had four vacancies, or 17%, for sworn staff. The report said one goal for the following years was to increase bicycle patrols.

Public Pooper Pinched In P.G.

Country Club Gate, keeping it trashy.

Police said they were dispatched to the Rite Aid at Country Club Gate Center to conduct a welfare check on a man in the area. When they arrived, they found the man defecating in the street. He was identified as Jodie W. Moore, 64, a transient. Police conducted a records check and said he had an active felony warrant for failure to appear out of Monterey County, as well as six misdemeanor warrants for other alleged offenses throughout the county.

Cold War Relic Suffers Vandalism

Guess the lights were left off. Tear it down. COAST is butthurt that they did not get the building; they can take pictures of the “Scientific” murals for them to study.

Repeated acts of vandalism have left the former National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration building in Pacific Grove damaged, prompting community advocates to demand action for its protection.

Advocates are deeply concerned about the building’s condition, which has deteriorated under new ownership.

“It makes everybody feel so unsafe. In a community like this, it’s usually very safe. And it’s terrible when things happen to historic buildings,” Carol Young said.

The Center for Ocean, Art, Science, and Technology (COAST) is calling on the building’s owners to step up, saying the space needs to be properly maintained.

COAST also worries the mural on the building could be targeted next and say overgrown vegetation is creating more hazards around the property.

“The murals here are much more than beautiful art. They tell the science and culture of so many years of fisheries here, which were important to the basis of Pacific Grove,” a COAST member, Vicki Pearse, said.

Marina Man Arrested For Gun Violations In P.G.

Sounds more like the thought police action than any weapons laws being broken.

Marina police received a tip about “concerning online postings” allegedly made by 21-year-old Ryan Keating.

At the Marina home, police said they found 2,500 rounds of ammunition in various calibers; two shotguns, one handgun, and three rifles, all legally purchased.

Investigators also found two “ghost gun” handguns and two “ghost” AR-15 rifles in the process of being manufactured. Numerous firearm parts and a 3D printer suspected of being used to make more firearm parts were also located, police said.

Four legally purchased handguns and 2,000 rounds of ammunition were located at Keating’s Pacific Grove home.

Authorities had released a wanted flyer with his photo and offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to his arrest in connection to a decapitated sea lion found near Monterey.

As of Tuesday night, the man at the center of the case, Jason Bietz, reached out to FOX26 hoping to clear his name and get the truth out.

Bietz says he and his daughter were visiting Point Pinos Beach in Pacific Grove when they noticed a dead sea lion on the sand.

As they looked at the animal, he says a woman approached them and accused them of stabbing and decapitating it.

He says they were simply looking at the animal, but things got heated with the woman, so they left.

Seal Posse Shoots First

Both NOAA and KSBW call out the man in the picture – who was not their man.

A woman walking along Point Pinos Beach in Pacific Grove reported witnessing a man and his daughter mutilating the carcass of a dead seal back in June to KSBW 8.

Several months later, NOAA got involved and announced a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the man wanted for doing this.

The incident occurred at 8:40 p.m. on July 27. NOAA says the sea lion was dead before being decapitated, and its cause of death was not determined.

“We are seeking information on the person who decapitated the animal and any other details surrounding the incident,” said NOAA.

Don’t Rely On MJ Taxes. They Keep Going Down

Taxes on retail pot, but no revenue from homegrown? Do we have revenuer cops and homegrown permits on the horizon?

Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill on Monday to roll back cannabis excise taxes. The bill, AB 564, undoes a hike from this summer when rates jumped from 15% to 19%. Starting October 1, the excise tax will drop back down to 15% and remain there through 2028.

Critics warn that lowering the tax could shrink funding for programs like childcare, education, and community reinvestment.

Andrew Castro, a cannabis consumer, expressed concern, saying, “I’m just kind of a weary, you know, that it’s going to tip over on the other end. In other areas for sure.”

For cannabis shops and growers, the tax cut means survival. Many argue that the state’s high taxes push customers to the illicit market, where products aren’t tested or regulated.

Carmel McLaren Vandal Is From Pacific Grove

Drunk, stupid or envious?

Samuel Shaffer

Carmel police arrested Samuel P. Shaffer, 30, of Pacific Grove on Tuesday morning for vandalizing two McLarens.

“Everyone is asking ‘why,’ and I don’t know the reason why this happened, but I can tell you that his contact with the police department has been pretty minimal,”

The McLarens each have a different owner who was in Carmel for Car Week. The vehicles were parked near each other by the Pine Inn.
