Peter Kracht Thinks There Is No Lighthouse

Kracht admires a developer’s work to buy up and tear down old structures in New Monterey. Even says our beloved street name should be changed. Stupid.

Lighthouse Postcard

The Lighthouse Avenue was named after a now-nonexistent Lighthouse and is becoming a very attractive avenue due to Outzen’s efforts and heavy financial investments.

Maybe the avenue should be named Outzen Avenue. He deserves that.

About That $5.75 Per Square Foot Rent At The Burger Shack . .

Grill renter Joe Cavallaro was hiding the fact that the rent included the eating area that the grill posts signs at, reminding us all that the tables are for ‘Grill patrons ONLY.

grill patio

Cavallaro said the snack stand is only 300 square feet, making the monthly rental $5.75 per square foot under the city’s latest offer.

City Manager Thomas Frutchey said Tuesday that Cavallaro’s lease area amounts to 800 square feet, including the adjacent outdoor patio where customers sit and eat their snacks, and a storage room for restaurant supplies.

That brings the square-footage rate to about $2.16 a month, similar to that of other commercial properties, Frutchey said.

Pacific Grove: The Mobile App

Can’t park here, don’t need an app for that..
parking lock

Costs the city $300.00 a month. If we only had some organization that would keep track of businesses that cater to visitors to foot the bill for that we’d have a good thing.

The app’s purpose is to get information about the city to both visitors and residents. There’s a shop and dine feature on the new app. There’s also a “report an issue” feature that residents can use to notify city leaders of a problem in the city that needs to be addressed, such as potholes.

Outzen Buys More LHA

Presumably to be replaced by the latest fad, New Empty Buildings like in the 100 Block

ex French Glass

Four parcels between the intersections of Reeside and Dickman avenues in Monterey were sold recently to Carl Outzen, a former Monterey city councilman.

Outzen declined to give the purchase cost, other than to confirm it was for less than $1 million.

Outzen estimates it could take at least a year and a half before he gets city approval for the mixed-use building.

The only tenant is The Vinyl Revolution, a used record store, at 230 Lighthouse Ave. The business has been there since 1994, and Outzen said he will wait to demolish that building last. He said it is possible the store could go in his new structure.

Deborah King Stays Locked Up

Where she belongs for life.

Deborah KingKSBW Photo

A woman convicted of striking and killing a Pacific Grove man as he picked up his son from school has failed in her bid for a new trial.

Kitagawa testified the tests were positive for hydrocodone, morphine, Xanax, Ambien, trazadone and an anti-depressant. In violation of pre-trial court orders, he also testified he found traces of marijuana, though the test showed only an inactive metabolite of the drug.

After an objection by defense attorney Heather Rogers, Judge Russell Scott informed the jury there was no active THC in King’s blood and to disregard the testimony. But he declined Rogers’ motion for a new trial, ruling the marijuana testimony would not affect the outcome of the trial.

Anything to protect us and our children from the teachers?

On Thursday U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer introduced new legislation to strengthen safety at local schools and to make sure state and local officials can better secure school campuses.

The bill is called the School Safety Enhancements Act, which said it would expand and strengthen the Justice Department’s existing Secure Our Schools grants. If passed, the bill would give schools more resources to install tip lines, surveillance equipment and secured entrances plus other safety measures.

Jacobo Ruelas' Murder Trial Non-Progress

Hang in there, justice will prevail.

Kristopher Olinger bench

At the request of the defense attorney, who said he was not yet prepared, Judge Mark Hood vacated the trial date earlier this month. On Tuesday, as Phillips looked on, Hood denied prosecutor Jeannine Pacioni’s request to stop “wandering aimlessly through the court system (and) set a firm trial date.”

Pacioni said she felt defense attorney Andrew Liu was driving the trial date and Olinger’s family had waited “quite enough.”

Hood said he understood the urgency but is “focused on a just, fair, and expedient trial.” He will set a date, he said, when Liu has digested 14,000 pages of discovery and is prepared. Liu took over the case in May after Ruelas’ former attorney fell ill.
