On March 2, at about 5:50 p.m., Pacific Grove police officers were called to a home on Jewell Avenue for a report of a battery. When they arrived, they found a woman who said she’d been beaten up by her boyfriend, Anthony Ray Ramirez, 53. The woman had visible injuries. “She reported that during the assault, Ramirez placed his hand over her mouth and nose in an attempt to smother her and, in a separate act, placed both hands around her neck and applied pressure, restricting her ability to breathe,” according to Pacific Grove police.

Marquis Pickrom, a former girls’ basketball coach at Pacific Grove High School and campus supervisor, was arrested by Pacific Grove police over the weekend and booked into the Monterey County Jail on Sunday for sexual assault of a minor under 18 and annoying or molesting a child.

The victim is a student at Pacific Grove High School.

Between August 2023 and October 2025, the victim, who was 16 to 18 years old at the time, reported being groomed by Pickrom, saying he “gave her special attention” and “made personal and romantic comments.”

In July 2025, the police say he kissed the victim and sexually touched her.

The 31 year old Pacific Grove man accused of smashing the windshields of two expensive British sportscars in Carmel during Car Week may not be mentally fit to stand trial, according to a filing in Monterey County Superior Court, but Samuel Shaffer can remain out of custody on his own recognizance until the next hearing, which is scheduled for February 2026.

Marina police received a tip about “concerning online postings” allegedly made by 21-year-old Ryan Keating.

At the Marina home, police said they found 2,500 rounds of ammunition in various calibers; two shotguns, one handgun, and three rifles, all legally purchased.

Investigators also found two “ghost gun” handguns and two “ghost” AR-15 rifles in the process of being manufactured. Numerous firearm parts and a 3D printer suspected of being used to make more firearm parts were also located, police said.

Four legally purchased handguns and 2,000 rounds of ammunition were located at Keating’s Pacific Grove home.

On Monday, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office arrested Benjamin Bahena, 37, for the fatal stabbing of a man on the 100 block of Market Way near Chinatown.
Bahena was booked into Monterey County Jail on a $1 million bond. Bahena worked for Pacific Grove Unified School District as a teacher’s aide, which the district calls a paraeducator, until September 2024.

Paul Nkoy Lumbi Jr., 60, was arrested Aug. 12 and charged with felony forcible rape, lewd acts on a dependent adult and other charges that police say stem from his former employment at Forest Hill Manor in Pacific Grove.

All three alleged victims were 82 years old. Lumbi has pleaded not guilty to the crimes, and he’s being held in Monterey County Jail on $2.7 million bail.
A court document filed last week by California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who is prosecuting Lumbi, indicates that beginning in 2005, Lumbi faced six complaints by patients at nursing homes in Monterey and Salinas.

On Aug. 27 at about 9:45 a.m., Pacific Grove Police officers responded to a vehicle collision near Forest and Bishop ave-nues off Highway 68. As officers inventoried items in the car — since it had major damage and had to be towed — they found prescription medication without a prescription.
After taking Castroville resident Nolberto Alaniz, 25, into custody, the cops discovered he was also in possession of suspected methamphetamine, cocaine or fentanyl and psilocybin.

Carmel police arrested Samuel P. Shaffer, 30, of Pacific Grove on Tuesday morning for vandalizing two McLarens.

“Everyone is asking ‘why,’ and I don’t know the reason why this happened, but I can tell you that his contact with the police department has been pretty minimal,”

The McLarens each have a different owner who was in Carmel for Car Week. The vehicles were parked near each other by the Pine Inn.

Pacific Grove nursing assistant arrested for alleged sexual assault against elderly patients; Attorney General
California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office announced Thursday that Paul Nkoy Lumbi, Jr. of Monterey County was arrested on felony charges of alleged sexual assault of three elderly patients at Forest Hill Manor in Pacific Grove.

They said that Lumbi Jr. was working as a certified nursing assistant at the time of the alleged assaults.

On Thursday, August 7, 2025, at approximately 5:10 p.m., Monterey Police Officers were dispatched to a domestic disturbance in the 500 block of Belden Street.
Monterey County Communications provided constant updates to the officers as they arrived. The suspect, Paul Opsahl, 54, of Monterey threatened to kill the victim, shoot officers as they arrived on scene, and then kill himself.
The victim was able to flee the residence as officers arrived. Opsahl followed the victim out of the house and was  arrested by officers on scene.
