After a closed-door hearing, Presiding Judge Russell Scott named retired Judge Philip Sarkisian to hear the case.
Ruelas and his younger brother, Angel Ruelas, are charged with stabbing 17-year-old Olinger and dumping him near the Pacific Grove Recreation Trail, where he was found dead on Sept. 19, 1997.
Prosecutors cannot seek capital punishment for Angel Ruelas, who was 17 at the time of the killing. He faces life in prison without possibility of parole if convicted in a separate trial before Curtis in October.

Tourist Season Outlook: Bad
But year-to-date figures through May show occupancy rates of 58.2 percent for Monterey County, compared to a national average of 60.1 percent. Demand for hotel rooms for the first five months dropped 3.3 percent compared to the same time in 2007.
The county is showing slight growth in its average daily rate for a room, which rose 1.1 percent, to $155.90, through May. But the growth lags behind the nation, which averages $108, so lodgings here may find it more difficult to bump rates than a less expensive destination, said Bowers.
Unless you are listening to our own minister of misinformation:
Pacific Grove’s 29 lodgings were booked full by Friday, said Chamber of Commerce president Moe Ammar.

P.G. High Jocks Get $6,000,000 Stadium
And what about education on skills that we use everyday?

The decades-old stadium will get new aluminum bleachers, a synthetic grass field, snack bar, scoreboard, field house and wheelchair access. The project began June 7 and is expected to be finished next spring.
The project is being paid for by taxpayers through a $42 million bond made possible through Measure D, which voters approved in June 2006 to renovate P.G. schools.
“In the wintertime it gets so muddy that it’s impossible for the kids to play a good game of soccer,” McCord said. “With artificial turf, the ball is so much more responsive.”
Yah, responsive balls. That will help me out in later life . .

Leave A Million Dollars In A Mini Storage?
If I was really looking out for the security of gold coins, I’d be asking a bank with a vault. Not a place where excess household junk is kept. Where’s Nadar??? Is he hiding in the bushes?

In a lawsuit filed June 18 against Extra Space Storage, Lillian King is seeking compensation for valuable silver coins and precious jewelry, which she says were stolen in 2006.
In January 2006, King’s attorney arranged to have 17 boxes of gold and silver coins and jewelry placed into a unit at the storage facility, according to the suit. In May of that year, King’s attorney removed two boxes of gold coins from the unit and placed them into a bank for safe keeping. However, days after that, the lawsuit claims, the storage unit was broken into and the remaining 15 boxes of silver coins and jewelry were stolen.

City Manager Suddenly Quits
Colangelo, who has 28 years experience in local government, said he’s not sure if he’ll look for another job, but that he plans to stay in the area, at least for a while. He said his son Dylan’s graduation from P.G. High last month was another reason for his resignation. “I feel like I have accomplished a lot of things,” he said. “I have reached a point in my career where I want to reconsider what I want to do.”
I wonder if all the employees that followed him to PG will do without him?

P.G. City Budget – $29,000,000
With fires and $5/g gas, it’s not shaping up to be a big tourist year. It’s smart to not be all Sandy-ish and start spending like a gold digger.
Pacific Grove’s $29 million fiscal 2008-09 budget got final approval late Wednesday by unanimous vote of the City Council.
The council has set the city machine’s financial carburetor on lean. Pacific Grove anticipates general fund revenues of $15.7 million, including new revenues of $630,000 and general fund expenditures of $15.2 million, with the balance going to build up city reserves.
Total expenditures for the coming year are expected to reach $24.8 million, including general fund spending and expenditures of money earmarked for special purposes.
