AOPs Sue Over Occupancy Permits at Forest Hill Manor

An attorney with Forest Hill Manor said she is preparing to sue the City of Pacific Grove over its refusal to issue a permit that would allow senior residents to move into newly constructed cottages.

The litigation would raise the stakes in Forest Hill’s ongoing battle with the city, which won’t issue an occupancy permit for the cottages at Fountain and Gibson until another project at Forest Hill, which includes new apartments, is completed.

“Construction of the entire project, and compliance with the use permit and all conditions of approval must be completed before the project can be deemed final and occupancy granted,” wrote assistant city attorney Heidi Quinn in an April 30 letter to Forest Hill’s attorney.

Allowing the cottages to be occupied before the rest of the project is finished would violate terms of the city’s use permit, Quinn contends.

Well, if they read the fine print as detailed as they write the claims for damages, the problem is obvious. Or is there some big love-in over at apartment B11?

The Dilworth Phenomenon

Dapper Dilworth

The San Francisco Chronicle printed side-by-side pictures this week of two prominent Monterey Peninsula residents.

On the right was Clint Eastwood, an international movie star, Oscar-winning director, conservationist, philanthropist, former Mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, land owner, developer, partner in the Pebble Beach Co., and one of the driving forces behind that company’s plan to eliminate potential homesites in Del Monte Forest while building a new golf course and hotel rooms.

On the left was David Dilworth, a high school graduate whose personal accomplishments wouldn’t fill a postage stamp.

Last weekend, the Herald even bestowed an advanced education on Dilworth, calling him an “environmental biologist.” Never mind that he doesn’t actually have so much as a bachelor’s degree in any scientific field.

What Dilworth does have is a lot of opinions and a lot of free time on his hands.

Attention Whore.

Art Galleries Attracting Crime?

Three Eastern Europeans from Sacramento took a $40,000 painting from a San Carlos Street gallery Monday and then returned late that night to break in and steal more artwork, according to Carmel Police Sgt. John Nyunt.

But it was officer Rachelle Lightfoot, responding alone to an alarm at Simic New Renaissance Galleries just before midnight May 7, who captured two of the burglars at gunpoint.

“Officer Lightfoot found these individuals setting up to break into Simic gallery,” Nyunt said. After padding the glass in the gallery’s front door with newspaper to deaden the noise as they broke it, the burglars struck the glass with an unknown object. . .

Russian Men Theft Of Artwork

When a shop sold hardware, shoes or magazines no one would think of making a big get away robbing them. But when the goods are “valuable” art, all kinds of riff raff come out to visit. Are more art galleries really what we want all over town?

Lillian King’s Niece Back In Jail

Cynthia Hurley was arrested last week after making threats against her great aunt, Lillian King, King’s attorney, Robert Rosenthal, and Nader Agha, co-conservator of King’s estate, said Monterey County Deputy District Attorney Lisa Poll.
One [threat] was verbalized to [Hurley’s] counselor and involved all three of those individuals, Poll said. And the second incident just involved Nader Agha on April 23. Poll said details of the threats aren’t public now but could be revealed at a May 10 court hearing in Salinas. Hurley was in a courtroom Tuesday for appointment of a public defender and remains in custody at Monterey County Jail.

One of the terms of [Hurley’s] probation is not to harass, threaten or harm the victim or co-conservators in the case, Poll said.

Mountain Lion Chomping Down Dogs

A series of attacks on dogs by a mountain lion in Big Sur has left residents shaken and searching for answers. In just the past two months, nine pets have disappeared and perhaps more.
One homeowner told The Pine Cone her two dogs were grabbed by the lion almost as soon as they walked out the front door.

I’m on the lion’s side. There’s too many barking dogs in my neighborhood all day. Message to all P.G. dog owners – keep your pooches inside at night if you do not want to attract our well known cat.

Union Pickets Return To PG

With it’s paid picketers donning new signs and bright yellow vests, Carpenters Union Local 605 has resumed a picketing campaign against a local construction company after a hiatus of more than two months.

According to two local general contractors, the picketing is a waste of time and money. Dale Bender, owner of Dale Bender Construction, said he believes the union ís message is lost among the general public. People just drive past them and they are just there, he said. The [union] is doing absolutely nothing but supporting picketers.

Randy Randazzo, another small contractor, said he believes the money the union spends on the picketing could be better directed. There are a lot of union carpenters out of work, he said.

The activity hasn’t had a negative impact on DMC. It sounds silly, McAweeney said, but it’s actually had a positive effect on our business because people recognize the value of merit-based employment.

Pebble Beach Man Threatens Grandma Over Addicting Inhalant

Jim Ferris

An 18 year old living in really filthy conditions in Pebble Beach with his 85-year-old great-grand-mother was arrested April 4 on suspicion of extortion, elder abuse and being under the influence of toluene, according to Monterey County Sheriff’s Sgt. Scott Ragan. Addicted to the inhalant, Jim Ferris reportedly threatened his great-grandmother if she didn’t purchase more for him.

She has a few cats and a couple of dogs, and he held one of the dogs with a pair of scissors like he was going to stab the dog if she didn’t go out and get his aerosol can of choice, which is spray-on deodorant, Ragan said. So she left, went into Pacific Grove some where and called 911.

Way to go grandma.

Mayor Dan Cort Hands Out Polluting Pine Trees

And not only do they pollute, they will block the sun from his solar panels. So here, have a free tree but don’t plant it near Cort’s house.

Pacific Grove Mayor Dan Cort is thinking globally, but acting locally. He and his wife, Beth, have donated 500 Monterey pine seedlings to be planted after the Good Old Days Celebration this month as a way to offset carbon dioxide generated during the event, which brings hundreds of vehicles and thou sands of visitors to town.

But Ronald Regan was right – trees cause pollution!

According to a study by the University of Helsinki, coniferous forests that is to say, those composed of trees such as pines release nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere that combine with other pollutants to form smog.

Several scientists and environmentalists contacted by the Associated Press for comment did not dispute the finding, though it contradicts the “conventional wisdom” that forests reduce pollution. Those who commented countered that forest emissions are part of the Earth’s natural balance, whereas man-made pollution is an addition and therefore an avoidable health hazard.

Lillian King Sues Convicted Niece

The Pacific Grove woman sentenced to a year in jail for stealing about $1 million in gold and silver coins and antiques from her 99-year-old great aunt has been sued by the co-conservators of the elderly woman’s estate, who are seeking to reclaim the property.

The civil lawsuit contends Hurley’s actions amounted to despicable conduct that subjected King to a cruel and unjust hardship in conscious disregard of her rights.

Hurley was released from jail in February, less than her one-year sentence, because she was given credit for good behavior and for time already served in jail since her arrest

P.G. Going Solar? Mayor Dan Cort Says Yes

Mayor Dan Cort wants to install solar panels on the city’s buildings and schools, which he said would reduce energy use by as much as 80 percent and set an example for other small California cities. I want Pacific Grove to be a totally energy sustainable, green city, Cort said. Representatives from Honeywell, a multinational corporation that specializes in energy efficient systems, were in town last week and visited several buildings to determine what’s necessary to retrofit them for solar energy.

Once known as the foggiest city in the USA. Has the climate changed to Arizona conditions over the last 100 years?
