Letters From The Editor:

I have lived in Pacific Grove my whole life and choose to live here for the close-knit community the town prides itself on.

I recently encountered a major wake-up call, a dreadful incident which my neighbors chose to ignore or downplay, that deserves attention. Every citizen within this community needs to understand his or her role as a neighbor.

Recently, my miniature dachshund was attacked by a raccoon at night in my yard. In the process of rescuing my dog, I screamed and yelled like I have never before (and I hope to never experience again). While attempting to scare the raccoon with loud vocals, I yelled as loud as I could, “Help!” amidst my dog’s constant screams. Still panicked, I yelled once more, “Somebody help!” After the adrenaline rush ended, I was appalled that NOBODY had come to my aid

Keep your dogs inside. There are raccoons here. There are mountain lions here. Dogs are territorial, pack roaming creatures by nature, they are not smart enough to know when they are out numbered.

No Rent Increase For The Aquarium

To avoid what could be a lengthy and costly legal battle, the City of Pacific Grove is giving up the effort to get the Monterey Bay Aquarium to pay rent for the city-owned land it occupies.

“We would be fighting for years in court, even if we won, we might not be able to use the money the way we want anyway” said city manager Jim Colangelo.

That ís because Colangelo said the city could be bound by California State Lands Commission restrictions on how revenue can be generated from businesses that sit on
tidelands. The city’s intent was to use the higher rent from the aquarium for various city services, Colangelo said. About 20 percent of the aquarium complex sits in Pacific Grove, while the rest is in Monterey.

Doing what they do best.

Monterey County Superior Court Judge Robert O’Farrell last week declined to issue a writ of mandate requested by Carl Mounteer to remove measures O, P and Q from the Nov. 6 ballot. But Mounteer, who is also a lawyer, said he will probably file a post-election suit seeking to have the measures invalidated if they pass. “I would pay the tax then sue them for my money back,”

No Beauty School For Vacant Theater

Basing its decision primarily on the lack of parking downtown, the city’s planning commission voted Aug. 16 not to issue a use permit for a Paul Mitchell Partner Beauty School, which would have occupied the 12,000 square-foot building at 525 and 527 Lighthouse Ave.

In July, Jeanne Combs wrote a letter to Mayor Dan Cort opposing the Paul Mitchell school, saying it could be harmful to similar local businesses because beauty schools typically offer discounted rates for haircuts, manicures and other services.

In other words – Similar Local Businesses charge too much for too little. Guess this idea would not go over . .

Lighthouse Cheesecake

That’s one downtown business that would bring more people to P.G. than all the bistros and taco places combined . . yummm The Cheesecake Factory.

Samson Locked Out Of Dog Friendly P.G.

P.G.’s first ever hearing to ban an animal from town. Is this too much time spent on a non-event?

The black lab that fatally mauled a TV anchorwoman’s Maltese in Pacific Grove will be banned for life from the city and must attend a behavior modification program, a hearing officer determined this week.

The dog was returned to its Southern California owners Thursday, according the P.G. police department.
Garcia encouraged Samson’s owners, Donna Marie Bazan and her father, Donald Armstrong, to pay all veterinary costs Ospina incurred for Lulu and those associated with a bite she received to her left forearm in the attack.

At the Aug. 16 hearing, which was believed to be the first of its kind in the city, Armstrong offered to pay those bills. But there could also be other costs.

“It is strongly encouraged, should Ospina decide to get another dog,” Garcia noted, “the cost of the new dog and initial vaccinations are to be paid by Bazan.”

Seniors May Be Allowed To Move Into FHM

Having to sell a perfectly good home to move into FHM. Oh the stress that must be bringing.

Forest Hill Manor

A lawsuit was filed by Forest Hill Manor to try to compel the city to allow the units to be occupied.

Now, at the request of Forest Hill, P.G. is considering granting temporary occupancy, which would allow residents to move in on condition Forest Hill completes its south-wing project and agrees to other conditions.

“If that is the case, that is very encouraging,” cottage resident hopeful Ted Hollister, 76, said Wednesday upon learning of the development.

“We can’t put our house on the market, which we have to do in order to move in,” said Hollister, who intends to move in to one of the cottages with his wife, Georgia. “We can’t afford to keep our house and move in there also.”

John Denver Plane

“It’s going to [cause] parking problems, traffic congestion at that corner,” Peter Alene told council members . . . This year marks the 10-year anniversary of the plane crash that killed the singer. He was flying an experimental aircraft Oct. 12, 1997, when he crashed about 200 yards off the coast near the P.G. lighthouse . . . . Jon Biggs, the city’s community development director, said the architectural review board already approved the memorial. “And nobody showed up” to protest it, Cort said.

Traffic? Oh come on. Peter Alene appears to be another one of P.G.’s cranky “No Fun Allowed” fringe. Ocean View Boulevard is packed with traffic year round. The memorial is nothing but a plaque stuck to a rock.

Ban The PODS?

PODS containers — as large as 16 feet long and 8 feet high — are an eyesore, impede the city’s narrow streets and are left in one place too long. “All of a sudden,” police chief Darius Engles said Tuesday, “we started getting complaints that these storage containers have been parked on a street for two or three months.”

Oh alright, we’ll pass a law to keep giant boxes off the streets But now we are thinking! Don’t run the giant boxes out of town, monetize the streets!

The ordinance would require P.G. residents to pay a $30 city fee to use the containers and would limit their use on city streets to seven days. Residents could opt to pay another $30 to extend the use for another seven days.

Treat them all equal – PODS

Dog Loses Life In Fight On Lighthouse Ave

On July 25, Olga Ospina was walking Lulu on a leash when the other dog, owned by Donna Marie Bazan of Rancho Palos Verdes, jumped through an open car window and attacked her Maltese. Ospina was bitten on the hand when she tried to break up the fight, but McGuirk wouldn’t elaborate on the extent of her injuries. Ospina has been staying with family in Southern California and could not be reached for comment.

Pacific Grove City Manager Jim Colangelo said police chief Darius Engles has already determined the dog is vicious. Colangelo said he has appointed Carmelita Garcia as the hearing officer in the case. Garcia will listen to both accounts of the attack and will determine what exactly should be done with the Lab, he said.

“The dog could be banished” from the city, Colangelo said. Or it could be ordered to be euthanized.

In P.G.’s attempt to copy Carmel in the dog-accessible area, did people ever think that all dogs are not friendly to each other?

Anyway – it’s a civil matter.
