We Don’t Serve Your Kind Shoppe Sets Off Flurry Of Spin Doctors

Ice Cream Shoppe Awning

Soldier Darrick Williams, who was unavailable for comment Monday, told the Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce that he and his wife walked into the Ice Cream Shoppe — formerly known as Rocky Coast Ice Cream — on Lighthouse Avenue but decided to leave when they noticed the ice cream was over their budget.

As they were leaving, Williams was allegedly told by the store’s owner that he wouldn’t serve soldiers at his business, and the two exchanged words, Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce President Moe Ammar told KSBW Action News 8.

“He was referring to the fact that this guy is a soldier and this specific owner has anti-war, anti-Bush sentiments and these have been expressed in the location,” Ammar said.

The incident has spurred an uproar, with some residents writing letters to the editors of local newspapers and others boycotting all Pacific Grove restaurants until the location of the dispute was revealed.

The Chamber of Commerce said that pro DLI groups are planning to boycott the ice cream shop next week.

Moammar Talks Stupid . . again

I’ve little issues with the rehab place (except maybe the resulting fewer residential units as a result . .) But “Neighbors”? Moe Ammar needs to be muzzled. Moe lives nowhere near Central & 2nd. My guess is that the residents are performing work for the COC which the COC collects money for.

At the corner of Pacific Grove’s Central Avenue and Second Street sits a lemon-yellow house.

The people in the house all have troubled pasts. Their histories include run-ins with the law, and problems with cocaine, alcohol, painkillers and more.

Moe Ammar, president of Pacific Grove’s Chamber of Commerce, has strong feelings about these people.

“I cannot think of a better neighbor,” he said. “I wish we had more neighbors like them.”

The yellow Victorian is the new site for the Bridge Restoration Ministry, a Christian-oriented residential drug rehabilitation center for men. The center relocated to Pacific Grove from Seaside in May.

The Bridge offers a rigorous, yearlong treatment program that teaches residents the skills to mend lives that have been shattered by drug addiction.

Stillwell’s Snow In The Park For The Last Time?

Businesses that contribute have been shuttered, all we have left are bistros and art galleries. Shows how much they give back to the town. Moe needs to go.

Caledonia Snow In Park

The annual Stillwell’s Snow in the Park event — scheduled from 10a.m. to 4p.m. Dec. 6 — has been a holiday tradition in the city for the past 15 years.

But the cost of putting it on keeps rising, said Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce President Moe Ammar, and has gone from $4,500 in 1994 to $12,000 this year.

Ammar said the chamber has $7,000 at present. Businesses in the city that normally contribute to Snow in the Park haven’t been as forthcoming this year, he said, because of the economic downturn. If the donations fall short, the event will be canceled next year.

Squids Got Internet!

Squid

Squid has been stuck to the edge of Squid’s seat– mainly to stave off “office butt”– while following three pigeon poop threads on the P.G. message board www.morriefisher.com.

But nastiness crept into the thread when Palmer posted a Photoshopped picture of P.G. Chamber of Commerce President Moe Ammar (who is of Lebanese ancestry) in an Iraqi official’s uniform, to which Guest1 replied, “Nice photo of Mohamad!” Colburn responded with more Photoshop art, this one depicting Ammar’s head on a Lebanese Army soldier’s body.

Squid thinks that load stinks worse than pigeon poop.

No, the Chamber Of Commerce’s propaganda and fear mongering stink more than pigeon poop. The Iraqi satire was of “Baghdad Bob” (who in real life is known as Muhammad Saeed al-Sahhaf, the guy that stands in front of cameras proclaiming victory over the US) since Moe stands up and makes stupid statements praising the Chamber. The other is of Muammar al-Gaddafi, the terrorist dictator. The names are similar. And Moe is a bit of a socialist dictator, IMO

Tourist Season Outlook: Bad

But year-to-date figures through May show occupancy rates of 58.2 percent for Monterey County, compared to a national average of 60.1 percent. Demand for hotel rooms for the first five months dropped 3.3 percent compared to the same time in 2007.

The county is showing slight growth in its average daily rate for a room, which rose 1.1 percent, to $155.90, through May. But the growth lags behind the nation, which averages $108, so lodgings here may find it more difficult to bump rates than a less expensive destination, said Bowers.

Unless you are listening to our own minister of misinformation:

Pacific Grove’s 29 lodgings were booked full by Friday, said Chamber of Commerce president Moe Ammar.

Forget The Butterflies, It’s “The Most Romantic City”

Does someone else own the copyright to “The Newly Wed And Nearly Dead”?

The Pacific Grove City Council Wednesday voted to use the brands as part of a marketing strategy to draw more tourists to the city.
Although P.G. for some time has billed itself in fliers, brochures and advertisements as the most romantic destination, the copyrights will solidify those monikers and generate publicity.

The city wants to be known as the “most romantic city,” “most romantic town” and “most romantic place.” “It creates news by saying you have copyrighted it,” said P.G. Chamber of Commerce President Moe Ammar.

The IMAX Movie House Opening Soon

Edgewater Packing

A filmstrip for each eye, a screen 65 feet high in a room stacked with 40 high-definition speakers and soundproofing a foot thick.

It’s IMAX, and it’s opening soon on Cannery Row.

While no official opening date has been set, Weinert expects the theater will open its doors within a month, and possibly as early as two weeks from now.

Cannery Row is becoming the downtown Monterey has needed for over 25 years. IMAX now is “the most modern movie site on the Peninsula with the latest technology in the safest town.” (Quote of Moe Ammar on reopening of the Lighthouse Cinema)

Motels Against Public Safety

Pacific Grove’s innkeepers are crying foul over a signature-gathering campaign by the Pacific Grove Police Officers Association to put an increase in the city’s transient occupancy tax — or room tax — on the ballot.

The city supported an economic advisory committee with an annual $107,000 contribution to the Chamber of Commerce for various city activities and events. With the formation of the Hospitality Improvement District, the city now uses that money to pay part of the Convention and Visitor Bureau dues.

Pacific Grove entered a contract to pay the Convention and Visitors Bureau through 2012, said Chamber of Commerce president Moe Ammar. He and innkeepers met with police association members Monday and emerged with “an understanding that they will consider our request not to pursue a room tax.”

Lighthouse Cinema – Open This Summer?

Lighthouse Cinema

No real new news, but this sentence brings back memories:

Enea was challenged before he built the Lighthouse Cinema in 1986 by a group opposed to the movie house project, and it was the subject of a citywide ballot referendum, which drew a large majority of votes in its favor.

Mayor Dingbat Flo was an opponent. Said that the theater would bring undesirable people from Seaside to PG.

Moe chimes in

“I am really excited,” said Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce president Moe Ammar. “I believe the cinema will do great, since it will be the most modern movie site on the Peninsula with the latest technology in the safest town.”

Pfft. The Imax in the old Edgewater Packing Company is the most modern. Moe just wants to suck more money from the business community and city. The dude is clueless.
