Dumpsters Of Commerce, 2009

There’s lots of concern over carbon emissions and other mythical hazards, but still there every day, putting real health hazards at your feet (and hands, arms, head etc) is the healthy seagull population. The gulls are well fed by the downtown merchants (and even the city this year) that leave garbage uncovered.

We can always count on Fandangos on 17th Street to leave the finest garbage out in the open

Keep a watch on Zacolo, Lighthouse Cafe, Peppers, Grapes O Wrath, etc. New to the game this year is the City Of P.G. with their own sidewalk garbage. 3 cans in a row on Lighthouse with no covers. Way to go P.G.

Going, Going, Gone – French Glass Building

The new plan includes 14 luxury apartments, combined with 6,000 sq. ft. of retail space. But it could be a bold business endeavor considering the signs nearby. Closed windows on boarded up buildings and other properties still for lease.

At least when built, this building full of empty storefronts and ‘For Rent’ signs will be shiny and new.

Longtime anchor at the end of Lighthouse Ave has been empty over a year and finally changes. Changes from interesting 50s – 60s metal siding to piles of rubble. Interesting that it looks to be several buildings that were wrapped in siding to appear as one. Used to be my favorite store for window & screen repairs.

Over a year ago, empty.

Vegetarians Eat Free

In his quest to clamp down on fossil fuel companies and the auto giants, Gore shamelessly avoids talking about something we all could and should do something about as individuals: Eat less or no meat.

A more sensible citizen replies with a letter

Hmmmm? Remaining unconvinced by this vast generalization I commenced to grilling up a second tasty burger, still quite guilt-free, and was amusingly reminded of a bumper sticker I’d recently seen in Taos, N.M. : “Eating red meat isn’t bad for you. Eating fuzzy, green meat is.”

How true! Bon appetit.

Stamm Trial II – Hung Jury II

Stamm Takes Stand

For the second time, the jury deadlocked on several charges that David Stamm molested a 14-year-old boy and showed him pornography. Stamm’s defense has said the alleged victim was 18-years-old at the time, and that the sexual encounters were consenual.

Stamm then said his life was like, “A broken bottle. There are many pieces I can pick up, but there are also many slivers that will still be missing.”

Maybe those slivers are in the victim . .

Sexology Experts Come To P.G.

Downtown was very busy last night. Most people were smiling.

“We won’t be doing what some people probably think sexologists do when we get together: There won’t be any crazy orgies or anything like that,” said Monterey’s Stephen Braveman, a certified diplomat of sex therapy and co-chairman of the four-day event. “I’m told that plumbers, lawyers and politicians have much more fun at their conferences.”

Pink Slip

The Pebble Beach Co. announced Wednesday it is laying off 47 employees, including 14 management employees. The company had eliminated 29 jobs in November, including 24 management positions.

In a prepared statement, company Chief Executive Officer Bill Perocchi cited the economic recession as the reason for the company’s reorganization. He said the drop in business is a trend that operators of luxury resorts nationwide are contending with.
