Contractor Fraud In P.G.

Your taxes and SDI witholding at work. An injured chef caught doing concrete work. Maybe that’s why the biscuits were rock hard.

On Nov. 10, the District Attorney’s Office said, Jose Cruz was found installing a concrete driveway without a contractor’s license and didn’t possess workers’ compensation insurance for his employees who were working at a site in Pacific Grove.

They said Cruz told a Contractors State Licensing Board investigator that he injured his back while on the job the previous day. The District Attorney’s Office said Cruz had required a deposit of half of the $3,050 contract prior to starting the project – a down payment amount considered excessive by law.

Teen Diver Deaths Ruled Accidental

The deaths of Stephen Anderson, 16, and Keegan Aiazzi, 17, both of Carson City, Nev. were caused by asphyxia due to ocean drowning, the coroner’s report stated. The teens drowned on April 9.

They said forensic inspection of their scuba diving gear showed there hadn’t been any failure to the systems. The gear, recovered from the ocean floor, was tested by Master Dive Repair Technician Ernest Bourne. It was tested in a laboratory and also in ocean conditions similar to what the teens would’ve experienced, the Coroner’s Unit said.

A 47-year-old man was recovering Wednesday after he was tossed into the ocean off Pebble Beach near Bird Rock, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The unidentified man was in a small boat by himself when the boat lost power and he began drifting toward shore in rough surf conditions.

He ended up in the water after his boat is believed to have either capsized or broken up against rock formations in the surf, deputies reported. He was in the water for approximately 10 minutes before making his way to the beach near a scenic turnout off of 17 Mile Drive.

Corey King

Corey King, 22, of Pacific Grove, was arrested on felony warrants for driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license and petty theft with a prior.

The arrest came after King and two of his friends called for help when all of their backpacking gear, including matches and clothes, were soaked by rain. Officials said the men, who have been backpacking since Friday, had been in “grave danger” of freezing.

Following the rescue, officials learned that King had a felony no-bail warrant for his arrest. King was arrested for the warrant and the two other men and dog returned home.
