I don’t know anyone that ever spent money at Wooden Nickel. It looked like another store full of phony country charm. Speaking of phony charm, the charm’s the same, but the name is new over at Country Attic, now to be known as Nancy’s Attic.

A filmstrip for each eye, a screen 65 feet high in a room stacked with 40 high-definition speakers and soundproofing a foot thick.

It’s IMAX, and it’s opening soon on Cannery Row.

While no official opening date has been set, Weinert expects the theater will open its doors within a month, and possibly as early as two weeks from now.

Cannery Row is becoming the downtown Monterey has needed for over 25 years. IMAX now is “the most modern movie site on the Peninsula with the latest technology in the safest town.” (Quote of Moe Ammar on reopening of the Lighthouse Cinema)

SANTA ROSA – A boy in his mid-teens learned Wednesday afternoon that it is not a good idea to try to rob a former U.S. Marine at knifepoint, even if the former Marine is 84 years old, police said today.

The boy said, “Old man, give me your wallet or I’ll cut you,” Bair said. The man told the boy he was a former Marine who fought in three wars and had been threatened with knives and bayonets, Bair said.

The man then put his bags on the ground and told the boy that if he stepped closer he would be sorry. When the boy stepped closer, the man kicked him in the groin, knocking him to the sidewalk, Bair said. The ex-Marine picked up his grocery bags and walked home, leaving the boy doubled over, Bair said.

Walter’s Pacific Grove restaurant is Monterey County’s first certified green restaurant, with a strict purchase policy that includes sustainable, organic, reusable, and recyclable products. The business has also instituted a number of economical and environmentally-friendly business practices that include creative reuse of business supplies and the use of natural, chemical-free cleaning supplies.

I call B.S. You should see the mountains of landfill-destined garbage and rubbish that this restaurant generates. Look at the grease encroaching the sidewalk leaking from their overflowing dumpster. See the other trash cans blocking the sidewalk. This “green” business practices is a farce.

According to court documents, on May 19, 2007, a then-16-year-old girl was working at Sunnyline Clothing, a store owned by Kavil in the city of Pacific Grove, near Monterey. Though the girl had only been working in the store two days, she had on multiple occasions felt uncomfortable with Kavil, Pacific Grove police officer Angelo DeMarco testified in a preliminary hearing held Nov. 5, 2007.

About an hour after unloading the van, Kavil told the girl he needed to show her how to turn off the lights using the electrical breaker box, police said. She went into a back room, went up to the breaker box and Kavil stood behind her.

He then grabbed her across the chest and waist, pressing his hips up against her and reaching up under her sweatshirt and shirt, police said. Despite her pleading for him to stop, he made several remarks about his arousal and, during the course of the incident, he turned off the lights, police said. The girl said she heard him unzipping his pants, police added.

The girl managed to get out of Kavil’s grasp, grab her purse and run out of the store and the building, police said. She then called her mom, who called police and picked up the sobbing girl from a nearby parking lot.

Last year these ugly steel news racks were in the planning phase. The first one arrived and now blocks the morning sun from the coffee place. Now it starts sliding back into ghetto news rack chic – thanks to Coast Weakly sticking it’s bumper stickers all over it. That should cost the bad tabloid a $500 maintenance fee, and lose 4 of it’s plastic boxes elsewhere in town.

Lisa Bennett pointed it out in the council meeting, attorney Laredo confirmed it was the same as graffiti.

Sustainable Pacific Grove, a volunteer group undertaking projects to help the city become more self-reliant and sustainable, and Trees for PG plan to erase the carbon footprint of the city’s annual Good Old Days celebration with trees — seedlings and adults — planted around the city after next month’s festival.

This does not sound like a good idea.

They will block the sun from the solar panels!

Tour Bus Crashes Into Aquarium Entrance

Monterey police Sgt. Bill Clark said the Coach USA bus was empty and parked on David Avenue west of Wave Street about a block above the aquarium when it began rolling downhill about 1:45 p.m. It hit several city signs and clipped the front of a vehicle driving on Wave Street before continuing down David Avenue.

The bus next sideswiped a building at 898 Wave St. that houses the aquarium’s offices and continued rolling down the sidewalk before hitting the Aquarium building on Cannery Row outside the gift shop.

Sales taxes only produce revenue when there are taxable things being sold.

The City Council voted unanimously March 5 to put the measure on the June 3 ballot to meet a March 7 filing deadline with the county Registrar of Voters.

Measure U, if approved, would raise the sales tax from 7.25 percent to 8.25 percent, with the additional cent on the dollar going to the city general fund.
