A package containing furanyl-fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, sent through the Postal Service to a subject in Monterey was intercepted Monday. Deputies and the DEA served a two-location federal search warrant in Monterey on Tuesday and arrested Madeline Sweet, 28, and her boyfriend, Everette Cody Reed, 28. Both were taken to county jail. Sweet and Reed face up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.

Earlier in the public hearing the two spoke to council passionately about their pet, Bruiser, and shared a long list of myths about mini-pigs. Lisa Hanes told council that Bruiser serves as an emotional support animal for her.
City staff told the council that under the Americans with Disability Act, dogs, and in some cases, miniature horses trained to perform tasks for disabled people, are allowed as service animals. Emotional support animals could be allowed with a medical recommendation, and a determination by the city manager.
Besides pigs, the ordinance would also prohibit as pets horses, cows, sheep, goats, gulls, raccoons, deer, squirrels, geese and other “domestic, domesticated, exotic or wild animals.”
“Common household pets” like guinea pigs, reptiles, birds and rabbits would be allowed. Bees and chickens would be allowed with permits.
Hanes said her frustration also comes from the fact that during Monday’s appeal hearing, she and her husband were not allowed to present prior evidence that Magsalay doctored photos depicting Bruiser’s excrement was worse than it was. Murdock had thrown that evidence out prior to the initial July hearing and because of that it could not be presented during Monday’s appeal, according to Hanes.
“We couldn’t say anything that wasn’t presented in that initial hearing,” said Hanes. “We had to present a case that was a joke from the beginning.”

With the possibility of a hobbled Coast Guard on the Central Coast, local entities that have relied on the guard in the past may have to adjust their expectations.
“We utilize them but not on a routine basis,” said Sean James, the public safety superintendent for the California State Parks’ Monterey District.
“Monterey or Pacific Grove might put in a request where the Coast Guard is not available to respond,” said James.
There might be times when the State Parks’ rescue swimmers would be called in because a Coast Guard boat was not available. Water rescues in the Cannery Row, Point Pinos and Moss Landing areas benefit from the presence of the guard close by.

A group of area activists are expected to gather at Pacific Grove’s Butterfly Sanctuary on Tuesday in defense of the birds, bees, monarchs and visitors that frequent the refuge to observe them.
They’ll be on hand for a press conference and rally starting at 3:30 p.m. in an effort to call attention to the effects of toxic pesticides and insecticides and to make a plea to local nurseries and hardware stores to remove such products from their shelves.

On Wednesday, the city will look to approve an agreement for the construction of its Great Tide Pools Trails project. In the session right before the meeting, council members will go on a field trip to the Great Tide Pools area which is adjacent to the corner of Lighthouse Avenue and Sunset Drive. It’s in the area that Dan Gho, director of public works, refers to as the Rocky Shores area. There council members will get an overview of where the boardwalk, pathway and walkways are to be constructed.
