In The Market For Eight Dollar Jar Of Pickles?

What a happy girl and her pickle may look like:

Well then, Happy Girl Kitchen is ready to sell them. I’ll stick with Save Mart, thank you.
8 dollar pickles

It all began when the couple lived on a Norway fjord for a summer and discovered the many pleasures of canning and preserving food. On the family farm where they worked, canning wasn’t just a foodie whim, it was vital to keeping the bounty of the brief harvest season to enjoy during the cold, long winter.

On their return to the States, they began a business called Fearless Pickles, which has since morphed into Happy Girl. These days, they have eight full-time employees as well as a national and international following: Todd Champagne recently shipped an order to a major department store in Switzerland, and food writers near and far are also singing their praises, with recent press in The New York Times Magazine and The Guardian.

Cold Case – 1984 Stabbing Death In New Monterey

Denise Barber, 77, never allowed the memory of her late brother Francis De Alvis to fade.

On Aug. 18, 1984, De Alvis was found dead in his apartment at 843 Hawthorne St. His killer was never identified, but police believe it was someone De Alvis knew.

“He was a good person, I can vouch to that,” Barber said.

The family was surprised to learn from police after her brother was killed that he frequented the Old Eros theater on Franklin Street and the Nu-Art adult book store on North Fremont Street, Barber said.

Add Killer Whales To The List Of Nature’s Cure For Otters

Not the sharks’ fault.

Suprised Sea Otter

A report by government scientists says killer whales are likely driving sea otters to perilously low levels in southwest Alaska.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s recovery plan for sea otters considered a slew of possible reasons for why the animals are in steep decline.

The report says there is only one threat considered to have high importance, and that’s predation by killer whales. Nearly all other factors, including climate change and impacts from humans, were considered to have low importance.

The report says it’s unlikely that attacks by killer whales can be managed in such a way as to help the sea otters recover.

70 Mile Police Chase From David Avenue 7-11

Cue the story about gangs visiting in P.G. “to find a place to get away from the hood”.

Hear-Old says spike strips were used, the Californian says they just ran out of gas.

Monterey police said that shortly after midnight, two suspects went into the 7-Eleven at 381 David Ave. and stole several 18-packs of beer.

When the clerk confronted the thieves outside the store, a third robber shot the clerk several times with a BB gun, police said. She suffered superficial wounds and declined medical treatment, said Monterey Deputy Police Chief Phil Penko.

Salinas residents Christopher Dean, 19, Ivan Haro, 18, and Apolo Abraham, 18, and Bryan Chavez, 18, of Marina, were arrested and booked at Monterey City Jail on charges of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, conspiracy, felony evasion and gang enhancements.

Would You Come To The Aid Of An Injured Golfer?

Old Grumpy Golfers

To some an injured person is something to stop and tend to, to others it’s just another hazard.

While Hughes told the 911 responder where they were and what had happened, Muller tried to keep the injured player’s partners calm and prevent them from moving him. Golf links staff member Nick Watson helped direct the paramedics to the injured player.

The course was busy that day, and Hughes recalls that other groups tried to play around the injured golfer.

“Other people just played through like it was nothing,” he said.

Muller remembers the men that he and Hughes were paired with decided to leave them and keep on playing.

“Yeah, that was a bit shocking,” Muller said.

Mayor Wants No Smoking In Public

Monterey has an ordinance against smoking on the rec trail. Cuneo, Kampe and Cohen all opposed the action. Kampe said “It’s incredibly rare to encounter second-hand smoke in Pacific Grove.” Kampe has never walked past Juice & Java or Hazara’s I take it.

Are Pacific Grove’s smoking regulations strong enough?

Mayor Carmelita Garcia doesn’t think so. She proposed Wednesday that the city consider tightening rules about smoking in public places, particularly parks, beaches, recreation areas, outdoor dining areas and sidewalk tables in front of restaurants and coffeehouses.

The motion to ask staff to draw up an ordinance failed 3-3, with Cuneo, Kampe and Cohen opposed

Every Election A New Tax

$90.00 a year for 10 years. My vote is a no. Cutback on necessary things during tough times first. I don’t see them trying anything but reducing hours.

Liberry

To supporters, the library parcel tax Pacific Grove residents will vote on Nov. 2, Measure Q, is the one chance the city has to guarantee funding to keep its century-old library open.

To opponents, Measure Q is an unnecessary add-on to the tax burden based on assumptions of facts that have not been discussed in public.

The ballot measure was debated Tuesday in a forum organized by the League of Women Voters. Linnett Harlan and Greta Miller of the Campaign Committee for Yes on PG Library faced former Councilwoman Susan Goldbeck and Jeffrey Flather of the Monterey Peninsula Taxpayers Association.

Pebble Beach Art Theft Updates

Checking in on the Pebble Beach Art Theft story. This thing is all over the map it seems. Gay bashing, friend’s fathers who pilot helicopters, what next?

KSBW has the complaint file in a .pdf

Dr. Ralph Kennaugh and Angelo Amadio reported the theft of millions of dollars of artwork on Sept. 25, 2009, saying the missing collection contained works by Jackson Pollock, Van Gogh, Miro and Rembrandt.

No arrests were ever made, none of the missing art turned up, and the Sheriff’s Office subsequently talked about charging the two men with filing a false police report or insurance fraud.

The reported theft drew widespread publicity after Kennaugh and Amadio offered a $1million reward for the return of the artwork. But the Sheriff’s Office, within a few days, was painting a different picture of the case, suggesting that something was not right about the big art heist.

Monterey Aims To Make Recreation Trail Safer

By restricting car traffic. What about the assaults and robberies that always happen on the trail at night? Watch out for cars in the daytime yes, but don’t go there at night.

Bicyclists, runners, walkers and skaters traversing the Monterey Recreation Trail along the waterfront run a gantlet of cross traffic that threatens accidents.

Hopefully that will change as the city of Monterey refines its traffic, waterfront and downtown plans, said city traffic engineer Rich Deal.

“I would love to get comments on any of the trail aspects and the waterfront area,” Deal said, adding that the citywide transportation study is aimed at making the downtown area more accessible and friendly to bicycle traffic.

“I want it to be really safe and fun,” he said. “A good chunk of the visitors we have love to ride bikes and walk along the rec trail.” Drawing some traffic downtown, Deal said, would result in “an increase in activity without having to find places to park cars.”.
