Question is do they really compost the scraps or do the wash them and sell them at the next market? Sometimes it’s hard to tell. Also attractive to sea gulls.

In September, the city and Monterey Regional Waste Management District started accepting food scraps at the Pacific Grove Farmer’s Market. MRWMD is handing out pails at the market for people to collect their organic waste and bring it to the market for disposal.

MRWMD than takes the food scraps and turns them into energy and compost.

“We take all types of food scraps … that is what you are cooking with in the kitchen, as well as when you finish your meal and scrape your plate,” said Angela Gobel with MRWMD.

P.G. Man Guilty Of Providing Legal Services Without Being A Lawyer

A Pacific Grove man has pleaded guilty to charges that arose after he provided legal advice even though he wasn’t a lawyer and forged a document in a lawsuit he brought forward, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Henry Leinen, 63, had been accused of running LRDI Legal Services in which he gave legal help and advice to people in state and federal courts, according to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office.

He used the term “legal services” and didn’t disclose that he was not an attorney on his website, prosecutors said.

It’s believed that the Gregorys are from Fresno. The “charity” has a Carmel Post Office Box for an address.

Matthew G. Gregory, his wife, Danella J. Gregory, and their adult children, Matthew J. Gregory and Gina D. Gregory, operate Central Coast Equine Rescue and Retirement (CCERR) and Wounded Warriors Support Group (WWSG), Becerra said.

“CCERR and WWSG run raffles purportedly to support veterans and horses, but instead spend the donated proceeds for personal use,” the AG’s Office wrote in a press release.

Personal uses included spending $10,000 at a hunting store, buying cars, shopping at Victoria’s Secret and Nordstrom, paying off personal credit card debts, traveling, and restaurant bills, according to the lawsuit.

Maybe all the nosy Seal Posse people are scaring them off

Volunteers with Baynet are reporting people disturbing the animals at the Hopkins Beach Rookery in an off limits area.

The animals are very skittish and will flee the beach if spooked by human activity.

“Right now we’ve got some pretty delicate situations among the harbor seals, there are a lot of pregnancies,” said Thom Akeman with Baynet.

The fear is people on the beach will scare mom off of the beach, either before delivery or after, leaving her separated from baby.

Akeman said it has already happened twice this year.

“We had two seal pups born over the weekend in rocks, while that is normal for harbor seals, that is not normal for this colony,” he said.

The harbor seals at Hopkins Beach usually deliver pups in the sand where it is easier and more protected. Akeman thinks these two moms may have been scared off the beach by people.

The City of Monterey confirmed Friday it is in talks with San Francisco based firm SFO Forecast Inc. to lease Balesteri’s old spot on Fisherman’s Wharf.

Sam Balesteri owned a gift shop at the location for five decades but failed to negotiate a new lease with the city in 2016. In August Balesteri received an eviction notice and in December vacated the property.

SFO Forecast Inc. already manages two properties in Monterey, Louie Linguini’s and After the Quake, both are on Cannery Row.

Researchers say 2016 has been an interesting year for great white sharks in the Monterey Bay. Sean Van Sommeran with the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation monitors white shark activity and in 2016 his team recorded 12 juvenile great whites. Until 2014 there were no recorded sightings of juvenile white sharks.

Go out of the way to attract tourists and you get more crime.

Balesteri’s Vacates Fisherman’s Wharf

City wants more Cannery Row style franchise stores and their sky high rents. Times are changing, catch a part of the Old Fisherman’s Wharf while it’s still there.

Balesteri said the city wanted to double the rent at the location in the new lease, and while he did not give the exact price, he said the proposed rent was in the neighborhood of $9,000 a month.

The space Balesteri’s rented included three business fronts, in addition to the coffee shop and the gift shop the owner of Paluca Trattoria sublet the restaurant space. Paluca will remain open and has worked out a separate deal with the city.

Balesteri’s is the first of two family owned businesses vacating the wharf over lease negotiation problems. Liberty Fish is not re-upping its lease and is expected to leave early in 2017.

Cannery Row Home To Gang Members

Gang hits, knife fights, it just aint as safe anymore.

The gunman who Monterey police believe murdered a 28-year-old man on Cannery Row last month was identified Tuesday as Jorge Luis Mendoza.

The murder victim, Raul Melendez of Monterey, was followed from the restaurant to the Cannery Row Parking Garage on Wave Street at 1:40 a.m. on Nov. 23. He was shot multiple times. He was transported from the bloody scene to Natividad’s trauma center, where he died.

Monterey police also released the names of the men who were behind a double stabbing during a fight at the Blue Fin Billiards and Cafe at 685 Cannery Row.

Joel Robledo, 40, of Salinas and Frank Guzman II, 27, of Castroville, stabbed each other while fighting on Dec. 3.

Police described the two men as “rival gang members from Castroville and Salinas.”

City Shuts Down Pavel’s

City Manager Ben Harvey said the temporary closure is the result of a broken sewer line in combination with an out-of-order employee bathroom.

Crews with Mr. Rooter were busy repairing the line Tuesday, but the business owners, Paul and Johanna Wainscoat, said the timing on the closure could not be worse.

The baker said there have been five times in the last two years when the bakery was closed and repairs could have been made without disruption, but he said the property owner did not take care of the sewer line.

More than nine months ago, A.G. Davi took over management of the property. Jeff Davi, the president of the company, said he doesn’t believe the landlord knew the line was broken for two years.

“It is not true. There was a leak in the summertime. There was an issue that was resolved. (We) thought we fixed it satisfactorily, and of course, it wasn’t the case,” Davi said.

Davi said redoing the sewer line is an expensive job, but it is now the only option on the table, and it is going to take a few days.

“It has to be completely redone, and the city is involved, and the city wants it done right, so we have to have the whole thing replaced,” he said.

The repairs are expected to take at least three days.
