Pacific Grove Mayor Bill Peake seemed determined to run for a fourth term—he took out candidate filing papers on the first day of the nomination period, July 15, according to the P.G. City Clerk’s office—but about a week later he returned those papers, withdrawing from the race.

Two days later, on July 24, former P.G. councilmember Dan Miller took out papers to run for mayor as well. He ran in 2016 for mayor after serving several years on council but lost to Bill Kampe, but since then has been a town firebrand, voicing his disagreements at city meetings and through the now-defunct P.G Press newspaper.

“It’s kind of a shock. I knew Mayor Peake would be a tough candidate to go up against,” said Wachs, who added that he hopes there is a large enough number of younger voices coming up in the future to lead the city.
Wachs, 40, entered late in the race “for his kids,” and said previously that he wants to help build a better city for them and future generations. Wachs came to Pacific Grove in 2021 from Houston with his wife and two young children. For the past two decades, his professional career has varied from creating billboards for sports teams to serving as an art director for venture capital-backed media startups.

Seeking to bring diversity to the face of the city council, an emphasis on more green initiatives and policies that foster affordability for renters and buyers, Dionne Ybarra has announced her candidacy for mayor of Pacific Grove.

The candidate said her Mexican-American heritage represents one of many diverse groups that have come to live in P.G. from all over the world bringing different cultures, languages, and perspectives.

Peake will face fellow Councilman Rudy Fischer, who has served on the council since 2010. Last month Fischer officially tossed his hat in the ring for November’s mayoral race. Fischer said he wanted to continue the council’s current policies and direction including improvements to the city’s infrastructure and noted the importance of upcoming roadway renovation

Mayor Kampe Not Running For Re-Election

Better find a decent pick for mayor before P.G. starts to look like Stockton.

He won in a landslide, and the four-year adventure turned into a 10-year journey, after winning the mayor’s seat two more times in 2014 and 2016.

The journey is now officially coming to an end, Kampe announced Tuesday, May 29, in an emailed statement.

He and his wife, Cheryl, are ready to do new things together, which they have postponed during this stint on the council.

Oh, and one steps up in favor turning P.G. into Stockton

Councilmember Rudy Fischer announced later the same day that he is running for mayor.
He said as mayor he would “pretty much continue the council’s current policies and direction.”
