“Fall always brings on an increase in ‘coon activity,'” said Pacific Grove animal control officer Elizabeth Yeo, “due to the nature of the animal.”
officials said the trick to keeping raccoons at bay is to make backyards and businesses uninviting: Secure garbage can lids, pick up fallen fruit, avoid leaving pet food and water bowls outside at night, and close off crawl spaces under houses and decks.
Yep. Secure your garbage. This website says it all the time . .

Of special concern in the Monterey Bay area is humans and domestic animals coming in close contact with raccoons. Besides the fact that raccoons in urban or suburban areas tend to be aggressive and can attack pets and people, they are also carriers of the roundworm parasite called Baylisascaris procyonis.
Raccoons become infected with this roundworm either by ingesting infective eggs from contaminated feces of other raccoons, or by eating infected small animals (rabbits, rodents and birds). Raccoons are asymptomatic carriers, which means that the parasite typically doesn’t cause them any problems, but they shed eggs in their feces which become infective to other animals three to four weeks after they are excreted.

The Pacific Grove Police Department is reporting an increase in coyote activity in Pacific Grove.
In the past several weeks, people have reported a number of coyote sightings and most recently coyotes attacked and killed a dear in the 600 block of Balboa, police said.
According to police, coyotes are prominent in the Central Coast region and it’s important to remember the following:
Do not feed coyotes.
Eliminate sources of water, particularly in dry times of the year.
Secure garbage containers.
Feed pets indoors whenever possible and pick up leftovers if feeding outdoors.
So many free meals – open dumpsters everywhere!

• Celia Perez Martinez, Public Works Business Manager gave status on the following:
o Public Works will be cleaning the outside of City Hall except the roof as it contains a toxic material and requires special handling.
Martinez goes on to describe the process, and says it will cost the city $17,000 to $22,000 just to clean the roof. Thanks to businesses that do not cover the garbage.

Not downtown, but a violation none the less. Pacific Grove Golf. That cardboard tube has propped the lid open all week.

Zocalos Mexican Restaurant – wanna bet the kitchen is just as (un)tidy?

Posted on 7/21. The County Health Department was called, the city was called. Everyone pledged to crack down on the sloppy restaurants poor housekeeping habits. I ported the story over on the Pacificgrove.com message board and it was picked up by the Weakly.
Well, nothing has improved. Recommendation, avoid downtown at all cost. Anything you touch will be diseased. Restaurants are not keeping wet garbage covered as per health regulations, who knows what other safety rules they overlook. Is the food covered? Is the mayonnaise kept at the correct temp? Are the dishes cleaned within spec? The mind fills with doubt.
Fandango’s 8/10, See the locking bar?? Use it.

Zocalos 8/21, complete disregard for health regulations.

or “Why is there so much bird poo on the city?”

Gulls and pigeons. Crows. Rats. Raccoons. Scavengers finding a free lunch and using Pacific Grove as a toilet. When will the merchants show that they care about P.G. more than for the money they rake in? If this is how they take care of their trash, how clean do you think the kitchens are? Are the food storage containers covered? Is the floor clean?
Pictures are totally unrehearsed. Examples are exactly as they were found. No laws were broken obtaining the pictures.

Small Update – A citizen turned this matter over the Monterey County Health department, who said that in the week of the 7th the businesses will be visited. Did it happen? If it did, it made little difference.
American Tin Cannery (for the commenter below that dismissed the original photo)

Fandangos did close the lid, but the gulls take advantage of sloppy housekeeping.

A few attention whores talk big about going green and ‘saving’ Pacific Grove. The rest of the people shrug and don’t give a hoot.
Cans, Glass, Plastic. And Hear-Old ad inserts?

It’s not dumping, it’s freecycling!

Not only did they take down the Christmas in April lights, the back of the place is always clean and never has trash spilling out of undersized cans like Lighthouse Cafe, Juice’n’Java, or Passionfish.
