Cougars Still Showing Up In Del Monte Park

A mountain lion made an appearance in Pacific Grove over the weekend. When officers responded to a call of a sighting, the beast made a break for it and was last seen running up the street in the Del Monte Park neighborhood, bordered by Buena Vista and Benito avenues, in P.G.

On Sunday afternoon, P.G. police were notified of a mountain lion sighted in the backyard of a residence. Officers responded and were shown a picture that was taken of the lion by the reporting party. According to the P.G. police, while officers were checking the surrounding property, the reporting party saw the lion run up the street.

A group of Jehovah’s Witnesses that rented property in
Pacific Grove for nearly 50 years is suing its landlords, alleging they broke the terms of a longstanding agreement by not allowing it to purchase the property.

The congregation contends that in March, the owners in-
formed them they had decided to sell the property for $1 million cash.
While the Jehovah’s Witnesses said they would purchase it,
the owners sold it to Hayward Lumber instead.

Councilwoman Jenny McAdams, who was elected last fall, said the current pay, “unless you’re retired and wealthy,” is a “deterrent” to those considering running for office.
A 100 percent raise would cost taxpayers an additional $43,680 annually, the city said.
The council also weighed the idea of giving members medical benefits and cell phone stipends.

“The design will incorporate the existing building,” Geiler said. “The plan will also have 20,000 square feet of retail, very similar to the San Francisco Ferry Building.”

An earlier 160-room hotel project dubbed “Project Bella” came apart at the seams after launching in 2015 by developers Domaine Hospitality Partners. In February 2017 the permit for that project expired leaving the city of Pacific Grove in the lurch for more than $100,000 worth of expenses only partially recovered from the developers, according to a Civil Grand Jury report issued in July of last year.

Up to the point of failure, the project had cost nearly $250,000 plus the cost of a $31,000 investigation. Domaine Hospitality reimbursed the city roughly $180,000 of that.

Pacific Grove was the subject of severe criticism in the Grand Jury report, accusing it of moving ahead “without proper due diligence,” the report read.

On the day of the crash, Stewart Napier was driving near the Eighth Street overpass in Marina when he “looked down for a lighter, and when he looked back up, he saw the victim’s brake lights and collided with him, causing the victim’s car to swerve off the road and burst into flames,”

“It was a heroin-methamphetamine case at rush hour on a road you and I travel all the time,” she said. “This is an example of the dangerousness of controlled substances vs alcohol and how they all intertwine. He’s a young man from P.G. driving on Highway 1 impaired, and he rear ends Mr. Acona, who dies. It’s tragic.”

Napier also pleaded guilty May 28 to assault likely to cause great bodily harm for a March 4 fight with another inmate at the Monterey County Jail, where he has been lodged since his arrest last December.

The sea lion population has steadily increased in the last several decades, but it has come with a cost, one being paid by already imperiled stocks of steelhead and salmon.

“The steelhead have a 90 percent extinction risk if nothing changes,” says Shaun Clements, a biologist and senior policy analyst with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Which is why Oregon has taken the drastic step of actively culling – segregating and euthanizing – certain individual sea lions.

Akeman and her husband visit the seals almost daily and track their numbers, conducting a Harbor Seal Census annually. This year the pair are predicting 55-60 live births based on how things are going with Koala and her pup and their count on pregnant moms.

2018 was a very good year for the colony and Baynet recorded 70 births. The population has been in recovery mode since 2014 when changing ocean temperatures in the bay depleted food sources. In 2016 just 16 pups were born in the Monterey area.

P.G. has already instituted a voluntary effort for restaurants to stop serving plastic straws, but “we’re looking at a broader scope than just straws,” Garfield said. “We are ratcheting down the use of all single-use plastic.”
The voluntary effort was led by the P.G. Chamber of Commerce and Sustainable Pacific Grove. Jeninni never had plastic straws from the day it opened five years ago. Owner Thamin Saleh said he didn’t know about metal straws when he opened so he didn’t serve any. Today he uses metal straws.

“It’s a personal belief,” Saleh said. “I don’t believe in waste. It has an unnecessary impact on the environment and our oceans”

Cynthia Garfield, city councilwoman for Pacific Grove, said Wednesday that its version of a single-use plastics ban is being crafted in the city’s planning department and will come before the City Council this year.

Substainable Tourism Will Save Us!

Councilwoman Cynthia Garfield is advocating for the sustainable tourism effort to be included among city’s key goals for 2019, saying that it would benefit both the city and businesses to have visitors stay longer.

Garfield provided of an example of how to manage crowds along the shore by ensuring a measured flux of tourists.

“Some of the things we are exploring is paid parking along the coast,” she said. “The Coastal Commission doesn’t like paid parking but we are looking at it in an unobtrusive way.”

Trying to figure out what substainable tourism is. We already have all the human waste/agricultural runoff water for them. Next up will be mandatory house sharing, where residents must host visitors. Manage the crowds along the shores means fencing off and keeping humans out of reach of the shore.

Oh – and parking meters along Ocean View – another tax.
