Falcons Have Flown The Coop – BUT

Open dumpsters are acknowledged as a problem.

Mark Brodeur, with the city, says the gulls are all but gone. Brodeur, the city’s community and economic development director, came up with the idea to bring the falconer in after seeing the tactic work in San Antonio, where he was working. He says there is a noticeable difference now in downtown, where seagulls had become a nuisance

Brodeur said there are still three spots in town where the seagulls are frequently being seen. He said all of the three spots are homes to open dumpsters. Brodeur said they have asked the businesses with the dumpsters to close them and expects this will solve the problem.

Jason Rutt released from jail on the loose again.

Jason Rutt

The incident began before sunrise when Rutt broke into several houses in Pacific Grove, including one where he entered a bedroom where children were sleeping, took a shower, and fed the children with bananas, according to police.

The house was on the 600 block of Acorn Court.

“Rutt entered through an unlocked door. He showered, ate and then went into a (child’s) bedroom. (He) was apparently feeding the small children in their bedroom,” McSorley said.

The homeowners did not realize there was an intruder until they heard a shower running, police said. They called 911 at 4:30 a.m.

Rutt ran out of the house, broke into two more houses nearby, and stole some property, McSorley said. He entered through unlocked garages.

The children who Rutt encountered were not harmed, but their parents were “obviously freaked out,” McSorley said.

Rutt was recently released from the Monterey County Jail and is on probation for burglary. His family lives in Pacific Grove and family members are cooperating with police.

Wharf Restaurant Bans Babies

Admin here once worked in some P.G. food establishments. When cleaning up after messy “families” I wished there was an added charge for cleaning up after the rug rats.

no child restaurant

“I think it’s ridiculous,” tourist Teresa Colombani said. “I think kids need to know how to behave in restaurants, and if you, don’t take them to them, they don’t know how to behave and they shouldn’t be kept hidden away, so I think it’s ridiculous, kids should be allowed in restaurants.”

The owner of the restaurant, Chris Shake, said if customers don’t like the rules, they can go somewhere else for dinner.

Shake said not only does he stand by the signs, but said his business has never been better.

“Well let’s put it this way, I haven’t had a down year for over 20 years,” Shake said. “Our business continues to grow.”

Jordan Pollacci Arrested For Up-The-Skirt Pictures

Might as well bring this picture back with an update. How are those sex offender programs working out, son of Pollacci?
Pollacci Parking Squirrels Only

Jordan Pollacci, 24, who is the son of convicted rapist Tom Pollacci, was taken into custody for misdemeanor invasion of privacy and felony probation violation after a man reported seeing Pollacci using a cell phone to snap photos under his wife’s dress.

PS, the KSBW URL link for it’s story is somewhat amusing calling Jordan a Pebble Beach Pervert –

Are Internet Room Rentals Hurting Local Motels?

A little. Bigger story is that they are getting away with not paying their fair share of tax. Then the tax collector uses the ‘no resources” excuse to not go after them.

I offer my plan. Have the parking enforcement department search the web and collect addresses since they are not enforcing parking anyway. Then impose a yearly flat tax based on number of rooms the house has. Should get enough revenue to hire someone at the tax collection office to actually collect taxes.

Pacific Grove inn owner Amrish Patel said the lack of regulation on sales tax for these rentals can create an unfair advantage.

“It’s not fair that we’re being taxed and they’re not,” Patel said. “But I don’t know how you can enforce that.”

The city of Pacific Grove prohibits renting out private rooms, but does allow homeowners to rent out their whole house if they get a transient use license. KSBW searched for rentals in the Pacific Grove area and found more than 150 renters listing private bedrooms for rent.

Monterey County tax collector Mary Zeeb said neighbors call in to report illegal renting but that her staff does not have the time or resources to check whether each renter paid sales tax on the revenue.

Next Time Take The Train

err, a bigger boat?

The U.S. Coast Guard said a man is lucky to be alive after he was rescued 11 days into an attempted kayak voyage from Monterey to Hawaii.

The 57-year-old man was attempting to paddle all the way to Hawaii alone.

A helicopter spotted the man, who had turned back to California, in the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday about 60 miles southwest of Santa Barbara’s Point Conception after he sent a distress call, the Coast Guard said.

A friend of the man said he had left Monterey on May 30 attempting to make the voyage of nearly 2,400 miles to Honolulu in a kayak with a solar panel that charged all his electronic equipment.

City Takes A Step Back Toward Gull Poo Problem

Check the KSBW video – the news reporter is at the same place I was recently. Add that to the shocking turn from trying to shoo the gulls away to cutting off the attraction by covering the trash around town, something that lighthouseavenue.com has been preaching for years.

Was Moe heard describing the trash can covers as “the best thing ever to happen in P.G.”?

The city’s public works department is experimenting with a new type of trash can to see if it can perturb the influx of gulls.

“Without a doubt, it is working. The seagulls cannot penetrate it and go down and pick up the food,” said Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce president Moe Ammar.

The city is looking to retrofit all trash cans on the recreational trail with the new can style to get rid of gulls, but officials said residents also need to stop feeding the birds.

City officials said without an active food source, the gulls will hopefully go elsewhere.

The city is planning to power-wash the sidewalks the first two weeks of June. The runoff water will be collected and sent to the local pollution control agency.

Give Away The Golf Course And Lose Free Golf

Crybaby Golfer

At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, council members voted in favor of the golfers.

The vote happened after a lawsuit was filed by 13 former city employees who were about to lose their free golfing privileges after new management transformed the Pacific Grove Golf Links into a private course.

New management was ready to offer retirees one free game of golf a month, but retirees said that’s not what they were promised years ago.

Councilmembers decided it was not worth the fight and lawsuit to change the city’s 35-year-old city policy, which allows retired city employees courtesy golf.
