The Monterey County Health Department has issued a Beach Advisory for Lovers Point Beach in Pacific Grove and Monterey Municipal Beach

There are various sources of bacteria such as marine life (i.e. seals, otters, and birds) and other animals; rainfall runoff; storm drains; and human activity. Rainfall is associated with increased bacterial levels due to runoff particularly in the area of man-made and natural storm drains such as culverts, streams and rivers.

Assemblymember Mark Stone — whose district includes Pacific Grove’s Monarch Sanctuary — is pushing a bill, AB 2421, to protect the iconic black and orange insects. “As monarch butterfly populations decline, ecosystems across our state are at risk of collapse,” said Stone, who introduced the bill in February. “This measure provides grants and support to preserve and restore monarch and other pollinator habitats.

Then we see what it really is. Looks like another tax and spend project.

The bill would establish the Monarch and Pollinator Rescue Program, which would be overseen by the California Wildlife Conservation Board. The program would offer grants to farmers, ranchers, nonprofits and public agencies to pay for habitat restoration projects throughout the state.

Straws Banned On Wharf

Making the wharf substainable. First the bags, then the straws and the cup lids. Next thing you know there will be cloth napkins and no more plastic toy souvenirs.

“It’s one thing to have a ban on plastic bags, but once you go to plastic straws it takes it up one more level,” said Mary Alice Cerrito Fettis, a board member and past president of the Monterey Fisherman’s Wharf Association. “We’re very excited that all the beverage serving businesses on Fisherman’s Wharf have figured out an alternative to using plastic straws.”

According to Ted Terrasas, the city’s sustainability coordinator, it was an effort to get early stakeholder input, especially by those most affected, the restaurant owners. About 30 attended the gathering, which included Monterey Bay Aquarium officials and local non-profit representatives.

“We have built our reputation on network reliability, for Pacific Grove this is really about staying ahead of the curve for meeting demand on data growth,” said Heidi Flato, a spokeswoman for Verizon. “Looking at the data and how much traffic is coming out of the high school and surrounding neighborhood, there is a need to add capacity to our network to that location.”

But those who oppose the new wireless facility said it’s not needed and there’s not enough known about the health effects of this newer cell technology.

“We have a Wi-Fi system that totally handles all their needs to go online,” said Pacific Grove High School Principal Matt Bell, who also noted that currently, the reception is excellent and students overall are really only using their cellphones on breaks and at lunch time. “We also really have a duty to make school as safe as we can possibly make it and currently there are conflicting report of the safety of cell tower emissions.”

Ciliberti purchased the historical caboose for $27,000 with the expectation to not only keep and maintain the piece of history and landmark in Cannery Row, but to also run an antique and collectibles business out of it as the previous owners did. He recently paid upward of $20,000 for the railroad memorabilia inventory owned by the caboose’s previous owners Debbie and Randy Reinstedt.

“I didn’t know – I purchased it with the idea of keeping and knowing that it would stay local and hopefully it would continue as a business,” said Ciliberti, noting that he had bought it under certain assumptions but had not yet talked with the city about it. “I recently purchased all the memorabilia with the hope to continue on the same path (as the previous owners).”

The mishandling of the failed luxury hotel project known as Project Bella ultimately cost Pacific Grove $100,000. That was the main finding of a recent Monterey County civil grand jury report investigating why the 160-room hotel development, which was proposed to replace the American Tin Cannery Outlets, failed to become a reality.

While Roufougar had also determined allegations that Harvey accepted paid airfare and other gifts from Domaine developer Ron Meer had no merit, the grand jury report looked deeper into Harvey’s part in a group membership into a private airline with his friend and sub-contractor of Domaine, Jared Ficker. Meer was also part of the membership.

Hosted by the Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce, the musical events will take place between 5:30 and 7 p.m. at the Lovers Point Beach Cafe beneath the Beach House Restaurant at 620 Ocean View Blvd.

It’s the first time that such concerts with featured acts including Johnny Tsunami and the Shoulder Hoppers, Boscoe’s Brood and Tony Miles will also offer concert attendees the option to buy beer, wine and small bites to eat.

Winds Make For Delay In All Oars Boat Race

Word Monday from race director Chris Martin who said the decision was made after assessing conditions for the next few days. It was late last week that strong winds led to the postponement of the race, a rowing competition from Monterey to Hawaii that was originally set to begin Saturday.

“Fingers crossed that the weather forecast continues to hold,” said Martin, noting that 4 p.m. is when racers are expected to gather at the marina and 6 p.m. is when they’ll take off. “Essentially we’re looking for an opportunity for crews to depart and have stable conditions and the biggest lack of winds as possible for at least three days.”

Grizzly Researchers To Use Mvsevm Materials

Good to hear that all the natural history in the Mvsevm has not gone extinct like the bears.

a new project from the California Grizzly Research Network (www.calgrizzly.com), a group of researchers from UC Santa Barbara and the La Brea Tar Pits/Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, seeks to trace the state’s history and biological legacy using tiny fragments of grizzly bear bone.

Four skulls and skull fragments from the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History will provide valuable insight into historical grizzly bear diets, and may someday help connect California’s past with its future.

Newcomer Fischer Running For Mayor

In June of 2106 after declaring his run for mayor against Mayor Bill Kampe, Fischer pulled out of the race, citing that his views were too similar to Kampe’s to run against him.
Fischer said he wants to continue the council’s current policies and direction, which involves improvements to the city’s infrastructure, something he said he’s long emphasized.
