Diver Sues Over Earache

After diving at Lovers Point

Lovers Point Sewer Pipe.

In a lawsuit filed Oct. 21, Theresa Raglen, who claims she became seriously ill after diving off Lovers Point on Sept. 20, 2009, contends the county tested and found elevated levels of human and animal waste six days earlier, on Sept. 14, 2009, but failed to post signs to warn the public of the potential danger.

“No effort was made to warn members of the public of the potential risks of entering the water at Lovers Point Beach,” the lawsuit said. “The lack of sufficient warnings was a substantial factor in causing” Raglen to become sick. The county often posts signs warning the public of high levels of pollutants in the ocean off Lovers Point — warnings that are often ignored by swimmers, surfers and divers.

No Tagging Of Monarchs

Monarch Molesting No Touch

The Pacific Grove City Council decided Oct. 20 to hold off on an eight-year program of tagging monarch butterflies for fear handling the insects could disrupt the population of the butterflies, which was drastically lower in the city last year than in previous years.

Tagging “requires physically touching the butterflies,” Jim Becklenberg, the city’s budget director told the council. “This year, given we have the low numbers … I think we need more information before making that decision for tagging.”

In The Market For Eight Dollar Jar Of Pickles?

What a happy girl and her pickle may look like:

Well then, Happy Girl Kitchen is ready to sell them. I’ll stick with Save Mart, thank you.

It all began when the couple lived on a Norway fjord for a summer and discovered the many pleasures of canning and preserving food. On the family farm where they worked, canning wasn’t just a foodie whim, it was vital to keeping the bounty of the brief harvest season to enjoy during the cold, long winter.

On their return to the States, they began a business called Fearless Pickles, which has since morphed into Happy Girl. These days, they have eight full-time employees as well as a national and international following: Todd Champagne recently shipped an order to a major department store in Switzerland, and food writers near and far are also singing their praises, with recent press in The New York Times Magazine and The Guardian.

Cold Case – 1984 Stabbing Death In New Monterey

Denise Barber, 77, never allowed the memory of her late brother Francis De Alvis to fade.

On Aug. 18, 1984, De Alvis was found dead in his apartment at 843 Hawthorne St. His killer was never identified, but police believe it was someone De Alvis knew.

“He was a good person, I can vouch to that,” Barber said.

The family was surprised to learn from police after her brother was killed that he frequented the Old Eros theater on Franklin Street and the Nu-Art adult book store on North Fremont Street, Barber said.

Add Killer Whales To The List Of Nature’s Cure For Otters

Not the sharks’ fault.

Suprised Sea Otter

A report by government scientists says killer whales are likely driving sea otters to perilously low levels in southwest Alaska.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s recovery plan for sea otters considered a slew of possible reasons for why the animals are in steep decline.

The report says there is only one threat considered to have high importance, and that’s predation by killer whales. Nearly all other factors, including climate change and impacts from humans, were considered to have low importance.

The report says it’s unlikely that attacks by killer whales can be managed in such a way as to help the sea otters recover.

P.G. Meets To Put End To Smoking In Public

Lover’s Point in Pacific Grove is where Ryan Roberts goes to catch some downtime and take a deep breath. There’s a smoking ban in place there, so he said he relaxes in his car.

“It’s kind of like discriminating, really, to people that are addicted to smoking and choose not to quit just yet,” Roberts said.

The proposed ban is meant to protect people from second-hand smoke and keep public parks and beaches clear of cigarette butts which contain plastic filters that never breakdown, supporters said.

He relaxes in his car. Do you mean he infects his lungs with carcinogens while simply looking at the clean air?

It’s not just the beaches. Take a walk along Lighthouse from Hazaras smoking rug salesman to Juice N Java’s sidewalk tables down to Pollacci’s liquor store loiterers.

70 Mile Police Chase From David Avenue 7-11

Cue the story about gangs visiting in P.G. “to find a place to get away from the hood”.

Hear-Old says spike strips were used, the Californian says they just ran out of gas.

Monterey police said that shortly after midnight, two suspects went into the 7-Eleven at 381 David Ave. and stole several 18-packs of beer.

When the clerk confronted the thieves outside the store, a third robber shot the clerk several times with a BB gun, police said. She suffered superficial wounds and declined medical treatment, said Monterey Deputy Police Chief Phil Penko.

Salinas residents Christopher Dean, 19, Ivan Haro, 18, and Apolo Abraham, 18, and Bryan Chavez, 18, of Marina, were arrested and booked at Monterey City Jail on charges of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, conspiracy, felony evasion and gang enhancements.

DUI Victim Becoming A Miracle

Amazing recovery. Positive attitude helps.

This week, with the help of a trainer, this once competitive dancer is getting out of her wheelchair and walking. It’s a feat many thought was impossible.

“That’s the best I’ve walked in a long time,” says Chelsie Hill. “I actually started crying after. It gave me so much hope.”

It’s all thanks to Project Walk, a rehab facility in Carlsbad, where Chelsie has spent the last two weeks. There, she’s learning to retrain her body to use her legs again.
