Mail Getting Stolen In Beach Tract

Mail piles up when no one checks the box every day. Sing of the times when so many homes are weekend occupied or short term rentals.

The warning came after postal authorities recovered mail that apparently was stolen from the 900 to 1200 blocks of Shell, Surf, Egan, Crest, Ripple and Balboa avenues between February and this month.

Postal officials returned the recovered mail and informed police this week, said police Cmdr. John P. Miller.

Police advised the public to not leave mail in an unsecured mail box for long periods of time and, if taking an extended trip to have the postal service temporarily suspend delivery.

Miller said it wasn’t clear what kinds of mail were stolen. “We don’t know if it was if it was bills or just junk mail,” he said.

Car Week Thieves Take Corvette In P.G.

The police commander says it’s a rare thing to happen. Don’t forget all the motorcycles stolen during Moto GP week.

Meanwhile, the P.G. cops let the car thieves go on own recognizance.

Pacific Grove police said Wednesday that an El Dorado County resident reported his 1962 red Corvette vanished after he parked it late Saturday at a bed and breakfast.

The theft apparently occurred between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m., police Cmdr. John Miller said.

The owner said he parked at the lodging in the 300 block of Central Avenue and discovered the car missing an hour later when a friend came by.

The car owner said whoever took it must not have started the engine because he said “he would have heard if it was fired up,” Miller said.

P.G. Car Burglars Caught

And cops let them go.

What?

The victim said he spotted two people in his vehicle about 1 a.m. in the 100 block of 19th Street. The burglars got into a waiting vehicle after the victim chased them.

Police said the suspects’ vehicle was spotted on Del Monte Boulevard a few minutes later and stopped by officers. Three occupants were arrested, and property from the burglary was recovered.

Arrested were Noziel Mendoza, 18, Jesus Nieto, 20, both of Castroville, and Joseph Olea, 27, of Salinas, police said. They were taken to the Pacific Grove police station and later released on their own recognizance, police said.

Seven cases have been reported recently in Pacific Grove, most of them among adolescents. Health professionals are concerned the rise in cases happened because some people are declining the vaccination.

Symptoms of pertussis may include runny nose, sneezing and a mild cough, but develop into severe coughing fits after one or two weeks.

P.G. Woman Convicted On Elder Abuse Charge

Patricia Conklin, 47, was convicted on three counts of elder abuse in a jury trial that began on Aug. 5. Deliberations spanned the weekend, beginning on Friday before the final verdict was rendered on Monday.

In the first, Conklin pushed her mother during a verbal argument, causing the elderly woman to fall. When Conklin called 911 to advise her mother had slipped, dispatchers could hear her mother yelling she’d been thrown down. Transported to Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula, the woman was diagnosed with an intertrochanteric fracture, a fracture on the top of the femur bone just below the ball portion of the hip. The injury resulted in necessary surgery and several metal implants.

The second and third counts relate to endangerment on March 9. On that day, Conklin went to a skilled nursing facility to retrieve her mother from the surgery. At the location, Conklin demanded her mother’s release and accused the staff of wanting her mother’s money. She then threatened the staff and took her mother from the facility to her home which was ill-prepared for the elderly woman’s return.

Kidnapper Reported In Front Of P.G. High

Clad in a trench coat and a black fedora, a man insinuated Thursday he was going to kidnap a 15-year-old Pacific Grove High School student, police said.

Just before 3 p.m., an unidentified man approached a teenage boy on Sunset Avenue in front of the Pacific Grove High School stadium, according to a Pacific Grove Police Department release. The student told officers the man asked, “If you had a cell phone, would you be able to call someone if I kidnapped you?”

Nader Agha Back With Another Hotel Plan

But won’t his name cast a negative impression?

Agha said he intends to meet next week with city officials about the plan, which he said would retain the Holman Building in its design.

The Pacific Grove City Council on Thursday created a Holman Hotel Subcommittee with Mayor Bill Kampe and Councilman Alan Cohen to serve as a liaison between project proponents and the council.

“He has some conceptual drawings,” Kampe said of Agha’s new proposal. “We want to make sure we follow due process and not make a decision based on a pretty picture.”

If Anyone Should Know About Gulls, The US Navy Does

But do the New York company’s solutions used by the Navy School work on Western Gulls?

The Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey seems to have found a way to keep ever-present, garbage-munching gulls from landing and nesting on its rooftops.

And neighboring Pacific Grove is taking notice.

The type of system NPS uses was one of the topics of discussion last week at a gull summit in Pacific Grove, as plans move forward for cleaning up the mess left by large Western gulls and trying to find solutions to reduce the numbers of roosting birds — especially on the flat roofs they love.

Seagull Control Systems LLC, a New York company, specializes in rooftop grid systems with wire or monofilament line — like fishing line — that owner Barry Fast says is foolproof in preventing gulls from landing.

The gulls that are mucking up downtown are not Sea Gulls, but Western Gulls. Y’all aint got a SEAgull problem, pardner.

The hot topic forced the meeting to move from a small, Jewell Park meeting room, across the street to the museum. That’s where museum executive director Lori Mannel set the record straight. There is no such thing as a sea gull, she said, explaining that the circling, squawking hordes over Pacific Gull are Western Gulls — never found far from the ocean.

Anyway, readers of LighthouseAvenue.com no doubt can recall back in 2009 when the Dumpsters Of Commerce story was posted to illustrate my opinion that downtown’s bistro owners showed little respect for the town and it’s citizens. The constant violators from back then were checked recently and (surprise!), no wide open trash receptacles.
