Ex Tree Posse Turned Seal Posse Responds To Losin’ Susan

P.G. Newcomer Akeman has a new calling against humans – watching seals and blocking access to the beach.

I may not know all the definitions of vigilante, but I believe Susan Goldbeck used the term erroneously in a guest commentary in Thursday’s Herald. She was concerned about efforts to protect harbor seals and the babies they have each spring on Pacific Grove beaches.

The city applied its policy this month when the first baby seal in known history was born at Lovers Point. After mom and pup were spotted on Sunday morning, city police asked Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary’s Bay Net docents to provide a human presence at Lovers Point. Public Works brought barricades and yellow tape; the Marine Mammal Center brought signs.

Humans Or Seals, Who Is Allowed To Block Access To The Beach?

The opposition is watching Losin’ Susan move the Seal Posse’s signs . .

It is curious the city of Pacific Grove, which appears to have a back door role in all this controversy, must have had a decided change of heart regarding marine mammals.

The city’s solution to keeping all marine mammals off Lovers Point Beach just a few years ago was to bang pots and pans to frighten them away. Now it seems we need to keep the public off the beaches if so much as one mother and pup venture into those areas.

Even Lovers Point Beach was recently closed after one mama seal appeared on the beach with her pup. It was mighty cute, yes, but the public was denied access to the beach and beach-related businesses were adversely affected.

They are not scientists but have a voice in how we use natural resources. Like most global warming advocates..

Coastkeeper volunteers aren’t water police — in fact, the strict arrangement the organization has with the Department of Fish and Game is to observe and record coastal activity without interacting.

“Enforcement is not our job,” Hunt said. “We’re just here to gather information and give it to Fish and Game, which uses our data to help determine how they can best use their own limited resources: Should they put up a ‘no fishing’ sign in a certain area? Should they implement a public outreach and education program? Should they cite people for doing things in the wrong areas? They use our information to make those types of decisions.”

Got An Itch?

Creepy.

An invasive snail recently discovered in San Francisco Bay has brought along its own unwelcome stowaway: a parasitic worm responsible for only the second known outbreak of “swimmer’s itch” along the Pacific Coast of the United States.

Swimmer’s itch, or cercarial dermatitis, normally crops up in freshwater. It is an immune system reaction caused when a certain type of parasite emerges from snail shells and attempts to burrow into a host’s skin. Usually, the parasite – a microscopic flatworm with a forked tail – bores into the legs and feet of birds, hitches a ride in the bloodstream and settles in the intestines to breed.

Pacific Grove Triathlon Ignores Health Department Warnings

Enjoy the polluted ocean, Pacific Grove triathletes. Recent rain has washed more raccoon poop into the ocean. Please wash your hands before touching anything in town.

Cal Triathlon in Berkeley, sponsor of the event, noted that a swim clinic at Lovers Point was held Thursday and that the most recent water tests showed safe levels of bacteria.

Triathlon planners have said they intend to go ahead with events as planned. Planners told participants that they must make their own decision about swimming in the bay and that Cal Triathlon would not refund entry fees to those who choose not to swim in the event.

“They were everywhere the last time we came, but we didn’t see them this time, probably because we didn’t see them in the same places as last time,” Carey said, adding that his family took the warnings seriously.

“But we don’t go all the way into the water. Just to about here,” he added, motioning to his lower leg.

Posted at area beaches by Monterey County Environmental Health staff when beachwater bacteria levels exceed state standards, the 8-inch-by-11-inch signs reading “Warning! Ocean water contact may cause illness” hung at three entrances to the beach on Saturday.
