Structure Fire In Pebble Beach Condos

These are the condos you see from the S curves on highway 68. Close to the 1987 Pebble Beach Fire.

No injuries were reported to residents or firefighters during the blaze, which was mostly limited to the attic of the four-story complex, said Mike Marlow, batallion chief of the State Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The fire was first reported about 7p.m. It appeared to have started in a penthouse unit at the east wing of one of several horseshoe-shaped buildings. The fire was limited to the east wing, but about six units sustained significant fire and water damage.

Deborah King will stand trial in the death of Joel Woods, who died after he was struck by King’s SUV as he picked up his son at Pacific Grove Middle School.

Toxicology reports described at the hearing showed that King, 52, had traces of eight different drugs in her system at the time of the accident on Sept. 2, 2008.

She had prescriptions for seven of them, and most were at “therapeutic levels.” The other drug was a small quantity of THC, a chemical found in marijuana, which could have entered her system weeks earlier.

Officer John Purdam, the first to respond to the accident, said he was told by a witness that King nearly rear-ended her at the Highway 1 exit onto Monterey-Salinas Highway moments before she crashed into Woods’ truck, which was parked at the curb outside the school at 835 Forest Ave.

A second witness told Purdam that she saw King’s vehicle drifting out of its lane and weaving through traffic as it approached the school.

Short Term Rentals Approved, Taxes On The Way

Tax the realtors – I like it.

The council unanimously voted to approve an ordinance reversing the ban on short-term rentals, which the city hopes will generate at least $200,000 in revenue each year.

The new ordinance requires landlords to obtain a license from the city and pay a 10 percent transient occupancy tax in order to rent out their units for less than 30 days at a time. The ordinance puts homeowners in line with the city’s hotels and inns.

“The revenue generated from the license fees and [transient occupancy tax] will help pay for a code enforcement officer,” Pacific Grove city manager Tom Frutchey said.

Art “Theft” Investigation Still Continues, Still The Same Suspects

Don’t forget about the story of the year. Nothing new, looks like as long as the sheriff stays quiet so do the suspects.

Monterey County Sheriff’s Cmdr. Mike Richards confirmed Wednesday that research into the purported September burglary of a Pebble Beach home — and the resulting disappearance of millions of dollars’ worth of artwork — is ongoing.

And the alleged victims, A. Benjamin Amadio and Ralph Kennaugh, are suspected of committing insurance fraud in the same case.

He said detectives suspect the men of insurance fraud and reported they continue to be uncooperative and have not provided any information to validate the existence of the pieces and their ownership of the originals.

Sholz Park Tree Damage

In a related matter, residents Ansel and Melissa Theony voiced concern to the council about the city’s plan to cut down a row of large acacia trees on Lighthouse Avenue at Scholte Park near the Monterey Senior Center.

One tree toppled in a recent storm, and Reid has recommended that all of the trees be removed because of past root damage and public safety concerns.
