P.G.’s Police May Be Understaffed, But They Do Have Lidar

The Pacific Grove Police Department said a lot of drivers are from out-of-town and sometimes they don’t realize the speed limits are so low. So they’re using a special tool called Lidar, to detect speeds before the driver even sees the officer.

It was not Lidar, but a huge building that slowed down an out of town driver last week

Sgt. Lafata pulled over two drivers for speeding, among other violations. Both drivers got warnings this time. He said it pays to own up to your mistakes.

“To be honest with you that’s something that we don’t really get very often in this line of work, so I do like to reward that,” said Sgt. Lafata.

If Lidar isn’t working correctly, Sgt. Lafata said any citations written during its use are thrown out.

What happened to the gull poop cleanup program, with all kinds of hoopla about pressure washing and making the downtown tidy?

Monterey Hear-Old, August 2, 2013:
The city recently got state approval for a dry-season “best management practices” plan for sidewalk and curb washing of bird droppings in certain downtown areas, said Hardgrave. This is to comply with local and state regulations to keep contaminants out of Monterey Bay. Those lengthy guidelines are available from the city.

Remove P.G.’s Parking Spaces?

While some stores loudly complained about the closure of Forest & Lighthouse for the poorly engineered road re-do, others want to take away parking spaces so no one will park and shop.

Where did this kooky idea come from?

“I think the visuals of folks enjoying themselves in the sunshine socializing will be a greater draw,” said Todd Champagne, co-owner of Happy Girl Kitchen.

And the business district will self police the parking to make sure that shopkeepers and workers don’t take all the spots.

But word has it that there is little to no parking enforcement currently. In a rare moment of news reporting, the Cedar Street Bulletin is reporting that tickets are down and it is said that the parking officer is on temporary assignment.

So park as long as you want!
