Restaurant Sewage On McAbee Beach

550 Wave street is Wave Street Cafe. Maybe the gulls liked it.

On Saturday around 1:30 p.m. a complaint of sewer odor was logged coming from 550 Wave Street. Monterey public works crews determined that it was a broken sewer lateral that was leaching into an adjacent storm drain, Anderson said. The storm drain leads to Monterey Bay near McAbee Beach behind Cannery Row.

The beach remained closed Tuesday pending completion of repairs to the sewer line that occurred on private property where a lateral pipe from the property ran toward the sewer main on Wave Street in Monterey.

Motorcycle Race Celebrations – Guard Your Bikes

The crowds on Cannery Row are often victims of motorcycle thefts when the event is in town.

The 22nd edition of Race Night on the Row will start at 4 p.m., with Cannery Row closed to cars until 10 p.m. as motorcycles park along the street. The event is billed as the area’s most popular afterparty for the FIM Superbike World Championship, which will be making its only U.S. stop at Laguna Seca with races Friday through Sunday.

Unresponsive Diver Pulled From Water At San Carlos Beach

San Carlos Beach

Sgt. Michael Lyke went missing while he was diving with a group off San Carlos Beach Park and did not resurface, according to KSBW-TV.

The Monterey Fire Department division chief told Gold Country Media he was unconscious when a lifeguard and another diver found him.

Lyke died at the hospital.

Ride A Pedicab From Cannery Row To Patisserie Bechler

Sure. I’d pay dollar for that.

Hosler said pedicabs were prohibited in the past in Monterey, but that gets kind of dicey. Elizabeth Caraker, the housing and community development manager, said pedicabs have always been allowed by California Vehicle Code.

• Operators must pay a $194.12 fee that is calculated on the time a Monterey Police Department services assistant to process the permit.

• No one younger than 21 may operate a pedicab.

• Operators must possess liability insurance.

• Passenger fares must be posted in the pedicab vehicle.

• Pedicabs must park in the same parking spaces as cars.

• Permits can be revoked if the operator is convicted of a violent crime.

• Permits can be revoked if the operator is convicted of any misdemeanor or felony driving under the influence charge.

• Permits can be revoked if the operator is convicted of any sex crime that requires them to register as sex offender.

Probably the NSA and Illuminati too.

A technology being deployed along Cannery Row is able to tell businesses how many people are walking down the sidewalk in front of their stores at any particular time of the day and even what gender the pedestrians are.

The device and software, called ViMo, is a vision-based sensor with AI analytics that can, for example, tell a business that 200 men of an average age walk past the store on Tuesdays between noon and 1 p.m. A retailer could then adjust its marketing to target that particular customer base.

The software does not use facial recognition.

Swimmers Cross Bay With Proper Teatime

English Channel Rules – Must stop for tea.

The 36-year-old swimmer and his brother Joe Zemaitis set off from Santa Cruz around 7 p.m. on Tuesday hoping to become the first men to complete the 25.1 mile swim across the bay using “English Channel” rules. Those rules state that the swimmer must be unassisted and cannot wear a wet suit.

Only John was able to complete the swim. His older brother, Joe, had to be pulled from the water after showing signs of hypothermia about a mile offshore from Monterey.

To Be Substainable Collect More Tax

The “S” word again.

The city’s proposed general fund budget shows a growing deficit of $2.4 million for the 2020-2021 fiscal year, $3.5 million for 2021-2022 and $5 million for 2022-2023.

“This is not sustainable and we need to get to a structurally balanced budget, where our income or revenues can adequately pay for our spending or expenditures,” Uslar wrote to the council.

Hotel tax is important because it provides 28% of the city’s total revenue, more than property tax and sales tax combined.

Try fitting 90 feet of boat in 78 feet of pier.

Mathew Arcoleo and his business partner John Mayer of Discovery Whale Watch have been battling the city since March over whether or not his new 90-foot whale-watching boat, the Island Explorer 3, fits the criteria outlined in a city lease agreement for Old Fisherman’s Wharf.

The city says Arcoleo and Mayer only have 78 feet of dock space on which to tie up the boat, which they sailed down in March from Washington state. The contested length is less than the length of a Prius.

Monterey Against STRs

Second paragraph here – Greed they call it.

AirBB Poop

To thwart homeowners from renting out their houses for short periods of time and consequently taking them off the market for long-term renters, the Monterey City Council is continuing its beefed-up enforcement of its short-term rental ban.

The short-term rental industry in Monterey sprung from owners of second or third homes renting out the houses for vacationers and others for a price they could never charge long-term renters.
