Poor, Poor New Monterey Alarmed At DLI Expansion Plans

New Monterey is “the largest community in Monterey, and the most isolated,” said Howard Fosler, president of the New Monterey Neighborhood Association, as he opened a meeting Monday night at Hilltop Center to talk about issues facing the area.

The Presidio of Monterey sprawls between the old and new city, and with its gates closed since 2001 to public traffic, has increased the isolation of the neighborhood.

An increase in the student population will drive up rental costs in the area as military men and women seek off-base housing, Fosler said, and more students means more traffic.

Why Is New Monterey Called New Monterey?

New Monterey

KION comes up with a history lesson, but no real explanation.

New Monterey was named by Little and real estate developers about 1886, who began to sell lots in the later 1880s. Little became City Engineer in 1892. The Milton Little (Walter’s father) family farm was located in the area, with the family home and “ranch house” on Lighthouse Ave.

Now, who knows where the taco bell tower columns on that gateway sign came from? They were recycled…

Legal Sea Foods

A Boston-based restaurant chain is planning a dinner featuring seafood it says environmental groups have “brainwashed” consumers to avoid.

Legal Sea Foods owner Roger Berkowitz tells the Gloucester Daily Times that guides such as “Seafood Watch,” published by the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California, have “no scientific basis,” but intimidate buyers.

Other items to be auctioned from Kalisa’s estate include memorabilia from the restaurant, including the hand-drawn wall menu, a rusty ambulance door emblazoned with the words “Dining Out Is Entertainment at Kalisa’s Cosmopolitan Gourmet Place,” and a photo board depicting a four-foot-tall image of Steinbeck, along with smaller pictures of Bing Crosby and Gen. Joseph W. Stilwell.

Pollacci Pleads Innocent In New Rape Charges

Tommy needs lifer status.

Tom Pollacci

Convicted rapist Thomas Pollacci of Pebble Beach pleaded not guilty Wednesday to three counts of forcible rape, Monterey County prosecutor Michael Breeden said.

The new charges relate to alleged rapes that took place in 2007 and 2008, according to testimony at Pollacci’s preliminary hearing in November. He faces a possible life sentence in the new case.

Trial is scheduled for April 11, Breeden said.

Cannery Row IMAX Goes Broke In 3D

So the owners prepare to sue the source. Out of town owners I may add. A different location may have been better. Many locals avoid tourist traps like the ‘row.

Imax

In a phone interview from his home in Chicago, Weinert said many of the theater’s problems could be traced to Toronto-based IMAX Corp. Weinert operated the theater under the corporate name Bella Cinema. Its relationship with IMAX is similar to a franchise, and Weinert hoped for benefits because of that.
