Red House Sidewalk

Pay Rent for the sidewalks?

“We’ll have about a 1.3 million dollar shortfall”, said Pacific Grove Budget Manager Jim Beckenberg.

That makes up approximately ten percent of the City’s annual budget and now everything is on the table, meaning City Hall could decrease the hours that it stays open, furloughs will also be considered as well as layoffs.

“We have to look at recreating services, library services, anything where we’re charging a fee for a service to make sure that we collect as much as we can so that general tax dollars can be saved for basic services like police and fire” said Beckenberg.

Small offering: $25 a month per square yard of sidewalk used by restaurants and sidewalk spam signs.

Bigger offerings: The Asilomar Flamingo hotel/casino.

The same not-news article about this restaurant’s “green” pitch ran one year ago in the Hear-Old..

You should see the mountains of landfill-destined garbage and rubbish that this restaurant generates. Look at the grease encroaching the sidewalk leaking from their overflowing dumpster. See the other trash cans blocking the sidewalk. This “green” business practices is a farce.

Google Knows Everything About Everyone, Now Including The Fish

Google Maps has this feature called Street View, pictures of the streets, driveways and people taken by a roving vehicle with a camera recording everything. Some are calling it privacy invasion. Now the Google is recording ocean floors.

Starting now users of Google Earth can dive into the ocean, explore marine habitats including Monterey Bay and get the latest information about how to make ocean-friendly seafood choices.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium, the aquarium’s Seafood Watch program and scientists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) and Stanford University made important contributions to the newest version of Google Earth that was released today by the Mountain View (Calif.) company.

Monterey Bay – including its undersea geography and marine life – is one of 11 regions around the world that are focal areas in the launch of the new Google Earth.

John Kenney Guilty

Monterey Herald 9/18

Barring a successful appeal, John Kenney will die in prison for murdering neighbors Mel and Elizabeth Grimes in a dispute over a boulder and a 10-foot by 4-foot patch of dirt.
After nearly three days of deliberations, a jury Wednesday found the 74-year-old petroleum physicist guilty of first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of Elizabeth Grimes, 55, and second-degree murder for the slaying of her 58-year-old husband, well-known local defense attorney Mel Grimes.

Prosecutor Berkley Brannon repeatedly questioned him Friday about the gun used in the killings, a gun which was illegal for Kenney to possess. He had signed a 2005 restraining order against the Grimeses that declared he did not own or have access to any firearms.
Kenney told the court he didn’t remember that element of the document. “It was filled out entirely by Susan Goldbeck,” he testified, referring to his lawyer. “I just signed it.”

Monterey Herald 9/2/08

Pacific Grove attorney Susan Goldbeck testified this morning that she did not remember whether she asked murder defendant John Kenney if he owned a gun before indicating on a court document that he didn’t.

She agreed that Kenney signed the sworn document, filed as he and his neighbors, filed for mutual restraining orders in the summer of 2005.

Pacific Grove City Council candidate Susan Goldbeck took the stand as well, recounting Kenney’s stories about harassing phone calls in the middle of the night and people rattling his doors, which he believed were the Grimeses’ doing. According to Goldbeck, Kenney felt “alone and vulnerable,” especially after an incident in 2005 with Elizabeth Grimes that left him with a concussion.

One attorney said not to get into a confrontaion
Monterey Herald 9/3/08

An attorney testified Tuesday that he warned murder defendant John Kenney in 2006 that he should avoid confrontation with neighbors Mel and Elizabeth Grimes and that “you can’t shoot somebody just because they’re on your property.”

Nick Cvietkovich said the conversation occurred while he and Kenney were on the way to a meeting with Sheriff Mike Kanalakis about Kenney’s plans to use a boulder to block the Grimeses’ access to a disputed patch of land on their shared driveway.

Loosin Susan gave the advice to trigger a confrontation?
Monterey Herald – 8/28/08

John Kenney took the stand in his own defense this morning after listening stoically to enhanced 911 recordings of him fatally shooting neighbors Mel and Elizabeth Grimes.

In an action that triggered the fatal encounter, Kenney said he placed a boulder on a disputed piece of land on the advice of three attorneys, including former Pacific Grove City Councilwoman Susan Goldbeck.

Kenney’s security expert was none other than the former Marina City Councilman John Morrison, “who resigned in April 2007 from the Marina council after admitting he tried to pull strings to get a private security contract.”

Stamm Verdict – Mistrial, Hung Jury

Stamm Takes Stand

David Stamm faced 10 counts of crimes related to a child. In deliberations since last Thursday, the jury did not reach a verdict in charges dealing with lewd acts on a child, including oral sex, dissuading a witness, and possessing child porn.

The jury did, however, decide that Stamm was not guilty on one charge of oral sex with a child under the age of 18. The Monterey County District Attorney’s office said more jurors were leaning toward guilty than not guilty on the other nine counts.

Lighthouse Cinema Open For Business

Glad to have a movie house back in town. Now let’s see some creative movie marketing – not just the same Hollywood dreck.

the new theater owner of Lighthouse Cinema has negotiated running new Hollywood blockbusters, and has spent roughly half a million dollars on renovations to draw more people, including new seats, tiling, and digital sound system.

Maybe better sanitation, too.

Gay P.G. Cop Alleges Discrimination

Smolinski joined the department in 1997, and the claim states his troubles began in December 1999 when parking enforcement officer Rhonda Ramey filed a complaint against then-Police Chief Scott Miller, alleging that Miller failed to discipline a supervisor who had harassed her for being “bisexual” and having an “open marriage.”

Smolinski, in the claim that does not specify the damages he is seeking, says he sat in with Ramey – identified in the complaint only as “employee X” – in a meeting with Miller in January 2000, during which Miller allegedly said Ramey would regret bringing the complaint.

Ramey sent a letter to the Hear-Old but it was not published. She later posted it on an Internet message board. In the letter, she writes:

Watch the clip from KION website, when they report Scott Miller’s response to Darrin’s accusations of harassment and Scott Miller is quoted as saying – “Sounds like a fairy tale to me”
