Also on the Seaside City Council agenda tonight, city officials will be discussing a ballot measure that would ask Seaside shoppers to vote on an increase in the city’s sales tax. City officials say they are facing a potential shortfall in the general fund.
They say more money will be needed to help pay for an anticipated increase in services when Fort Ord is developed

Beware Of The (Tar) Blob

Or there’s oil under all that kelp, when do we begin drilling?
Large clumps of tar are washing up at Asilomar State Beach in Pacific Grove, above, and several other beaches stretching north into San Mateo County. The source of the sticky tar is yet to be determined.
Tar balls are washing ashore on Central Coast beaches, and while scientists are not sure why, they have a pretty good idea.
From Asilomar State Beach in the south to Moss Beach in San Mateo County, the tar deposits are believed to be naturally occurring, said Dana Michaels, spokeswoman for the Department of Fish and Game.
Before anyone gets all evrio-mental, they were naturally occurring. KION Reports:

State officials believe that the tar balls that have washed up on beaches stretching from San Francisco to Monterey County are naturally occurring and not the result of an offshore oil spill, a California Department of Fish and Game spokesman said Friday.
Great White Shark Set Free

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water the Monterey Bay Aquarium today released a 6 foot 5 inch, 171-pound white shark into Monterey Bay.
The shark had been on display at the aquarium’s Outer Bay since September. Approximately 600,000 aquarium visitors saw the shark during the 137 days he was on display, according to aquarium officials.
Free Bruce!!
(Bruce was the name given to the mechanical shark in the movie “Jaws”)
Recreation Trail Attack
Monterey police are looking for three men who attacked and robbed a man and his girlfriend of jewelry and money Monday night on Recreation Trail near Window on the Bay in Monterey according to authorities.
One suspect was armed with a small semi-automatic handgun and another had a knife. The suspects approached the man from behind and dragged him off the trail, where he was robbed and stabbed several times in the back and arms.
Dangerous place at night. Don’t go there.

Martha Mata Vasquez, 39, likely will be ordered to serve 15 years in prison under the plea deal with prosecutors. She initially faced a charge of second-degree murder in the death of Olivia Castillo, of Castroville. Prosecutors said Vasquez injected Castillo in the buttocks with corn oil, claiming it was an anti-wrinkle treatment she called “French Polymer.”

Officials took samples of bacteria levels at the Commercial Wharf Beach in Monterey and Lover’s Point Beach in Pacific Grove and found dangerous levels.
Marina Men Arrested In Child Porn Case
Marina police arrested two more men this week in connection with pornographic pictures of two Monterey County girls.
On Thursday, police arrested Edwin Nath, 26, and Justin Adams, 19, both of Marina,on suspicion of possessing child pornography and related charges, two days after arresting Michael Gruber, 28, also of Marina, on similar charges.
The three men sexually exploited two 14-year-old girls, said Marina police Lt. Rick Janicki.
Police arrested Gruber on Tuesday on suspicion of molesting a minor, transporting obscene material, having material depicting sexual conduct with a minor, and growing, selling and furnishing marijuana to minors, police said.
Nath and Adams were arrested on suspicion of numerous counts of possessing child pornography and trafficking obscene materials.
Adams also was arrested on suspicion of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.
Diver Dies In Bay
Bret Ramage, 35, was scuba diving with a chartered boat off the coast of Monterey at around 2 p.m. when he lost consciousness.
Dive instructors came to his aid and when the boat reached the shore, Ramage was rushed to the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula for emergency medical care, but doctors could not save the man, and he was later pronounced dead.
Man Thought Police Cruiser Was A Taxi In Santa Cruz

19-year-old Dane Ludwig was arrested Saturday night after he jumped into a stopped patrol car, mistaking it for a cab he had summoned.
Deputy Esther Beckman had stopped a bicyclist near Brommer Street. While she was talking to the cyclist, a man who had been drinking and ingesting cocaine got into the front passenger seat of her patrol car thinking it was a cab.
The bicyclist rode off repeating, “Dude, that was a trip” The would-be fare was jailed on suspicion of being under the influence.
P.G. Man Charged With Vehicular Manslaughter
Pacific Grove Police Department reports that the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office filed vehicular manslaughter charges against Pacific Grove resident Aaron Robert Erwin Thursday.
According to the police, the charges are in connection with a traffic collision that claimed the life of a 63-year-old Pacific Grove resident who was walking in a crosswalk in December 2004.
