Farmers Market Moved North

It seemed as cold as the north pole on the first day on Central Avenue. Now the liquor store where the rapes occurred can have their reserved parking spaces back.

As part of the deal to move its location, the city will allow vendors who don’t live in Pacific Grove to sell arts and crafts and other non-produce items. Peppard, who said Everyone’s Harvest spent thousands of dollars on advertising for the move, said that will open the possibility more vendors will set up shop at the farmers’ market.

Police Commander’s Underage Son Charged For Hosting Beer Party

Party in P.G. that led to one teen driving under the influence, crashing and leaving another teen disabled for life.

Who bought the beer?

Christopher Ray Veloz, Jr., 19, is charged with hosting a party where alcohol was consumed by minors. The count, which violates Pacific Grove’s municipal code, is a misdemeanor.

Veloz, who was arraigned June 24 in a Salinas and pleaded not guilty to the charge, faces up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted. A pretrial conference is set for July 22.

Pacific Grove city attorney David Laredo alleges Veloz, the son of Seaside Police Cmdr. Chris Veloz, was hosting a party Feb. 21 at his Syida Drive home where P.G. High School senior Aaron Corn and other teens were present and drank beer.

Pollacci Gets Maximum Sentence

Tom Pollacci

“Mr. Pollacci has a well known, long lasting and enduring reputation as a rapist,” said Monterey County Superior Court Judge Russell Scott before pronouncing the sentence.

Scott also said Pollacci showed a great deal of “sophistication” and forethought in planning his attacks. And he quoted a letter from a woman who said she was one of Pollacci’s earlier victims. “He has no reason to live a productive life due to his family, who is willing to take care of him,” wrote the woman

Better Than A Distressed Seagull Alarm, It’s Hawks Hunting Prey

Until two months ago, thousands of shrieking seagulls would converge on the Marina landfill every day, distracting workers, pecking through trash and pooping everywhere.

The coastal birds have long flocked to the dump to feast on a smorgasbord of landfill leftovers, such as fast food, chicken bones and rotting fruit.

But that’s all changed. There are new birds in town, and they’re shaking things up.

“I don’t know where the seagulls are,” Monterey Regional Waste Management District general manager William Merry told The Pine Cone. “But they are not here.”

Since March, the MRWMD has contracted with a Turlock company to release falcons and other birds of prey to drive all but a few of the seagulls away.

Attorney In Olga Ospina Dead Dog Trial Asks For Reduction In $$

Olga Ospina

William Gavin, the attorney for dog owner Donna Bazan and her father, Donald Armstrong — whom a jury found negligent because he didn’t do enough to stop the attack — filed a motion for a new trial and contends part of the jury’s award was unconstitutional.

“He asked Judge [Lydia] Villarreal to throw out parts of the jury verdict,” Ken Gorman, Ospina’s attorney, told The Pine Cone. “Specifically, the punitive damage award against Armstrong and the $7,500 for [Ospina’s] future pain and suffering.” In the motion, Gavin claims there was insufficient evidence to warrant punitive damages.

NOAA’s Parking Lot Lights Are For Safety?

First time they said safety, robberies and mountain lions will be deterred by them. Now we hear they are for protection against terrorists. What’s really going on in that seemingly innocent fish & weather office?

Lights of pain

There’s another reason NOAA wants the facility illuminated, according to Watson.

“The feds claim that the lighting is needed to protect the station from potential terrorist attack/vandalism,” Watson wrote.

Pebble Beach Art Theft Update

What will they do next? Hey boys, we are all waiting for an encore.

The burglary wasn’t a burglary, the ransom note wasn’t a ransom note, and the $80 million art heist wasn’t an $80 million art heist at all, according to Monterey County Sheriff’s Cmdr. Mike Richards. Though the men who reported being the victims in the Sept. 25, 2009, burglary of their Pebble Beach rental home, A. Benjamin Amadio and Ralph Kennaugh, have not yet been charged with any crimes, they apparently fabricated the art theft that made headlines across the nation.

The men, who also complained of unfair treatment, inaction and discrimination by the sheriff’s office, have been” quiet in recent months.

“We haven’t heard from them directly for some time. I understand now they moved over to Santa Cruz County,” he said. “They were evicted from the Pebble Beach house.”

Developer Agha Cries Over Spent Contribution

“Finally, even if you were to believe everything stated was true by Agha, he suffered no damages,” Swartz said. “When anyone donates money to a political campaign, there can be no expectation of recovery of anything in return.”

What? Doubt that Agha is truthful? Remember the lawsuit over the fake antique clock?
