David Dilworth is the laughing stock of PG.

Mr. Mayor, please reconsider your resignation. We need you to help steer the city through this crisis.

You have the full support of the majority of PG residents.

Please don’t let the door hit you on the way out, Dan Cort!

MAYBE Morrie Fisher can become the “temporary” mayor while they’re hunting for a replacement for Mayor Dan. After all, Morrie is over-qualified as one of the “good ol’ boys” of Pacific Grove.

Yeah. Nice. The Bulletin comes out with a hit piece on the same counsel members on the same day. Good call PG Bulletin. Maybe you can can get them all to resign and reinstate the load of buffoons that got PG into this mess in the first place. Good luck with that guys. You’ll be know as America’s Broke Hometown. Since all the Butterflies are gone, I guess you work with what you’ve got, huh?

Perhaps Ted Hollister, who ran against Dan Cort in the last election, should consider throwing his hat in the ring. Considering he was a late write-in candidate, he garnered a lot of votes.

There aren’t too many qualified people to hold the position. This is Pacific Grove, after all…

Sounds like extortion to me. Dilworth sounds like he needs some time in the mental health system.

Mayor Quits!

Dan Cort Bailn Like Palin

another political twist as Mayor Dan Cort has announced his intent to resign. It comes after the kick-off for a grassroots recall campaign on Tuesday.

Cort was re-elected as Mayor in November. According to a letter he wrote, he will resign effective August 31st. He calls the current situation a “negative environment” and the actions by his opponents “intimidating.”

His two page letter also addresses the bigger picture for the city. “I do not believe it is in the best interest of the City and it’s citizens, to spend the next six to twelve months distracted by a recall effort,” says Cort.

The two man group speaking out in the recall campaign is activist David Dilworth and former council member Terrence Zito. Coincidentally, Dilworth also ran for a seat on the city council in November. He was not elected.

Dilworth Holds Press Conference To Launch Attack

In a press conference in front of the P.G. post office Aug. 4, activist David Dilworth is the second to sign a petition to recall Mayor Dan Cort and three council members. The first to sign was Dilworth’s right-hand man, former P.G. Councilman Terrence Zito.

Pacific Grove Mayor Dan Cort has announced his surprise resignation, effective Aug. 31, in response to the threat of a recall.

In an email to Cort sent before 6pm August 3, P.G. activist David Dilworth informed the mayor he planned to begin gathering recall signatures at 11:45am Aug. 4—unless Cort promptly resigned.

Mayor Cort Quits When Faced With Recall

Must have called David Dilworth a moron in an email . . .

Dan Cort And David Dilworth

Not a very good Mayor in my opinion. Man has an agenda with all the U.N. Agenda 21 sustainable stuff. Wanted to close the streets to cars. Thought solar panel in foggy P.G. would benefit. Called citizens that voiced opinion ‘moron’. Failed to lead in the worst situations. Hope we can forget this man and return to common sense.

The best reporting so far is over at Cedar Street Times. Check it out.

“Today, I received an email from David Dilworth (attached) threatening me with a recall petition if I did not resign by 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, August 4, 2009. Mr. Dilworth stated that if I resigned “for family or other reason”, that the media and general public would never need to know of the recall effort. I believe this is an attempt to intimidate me into resigning before I am able to vote on the Police Officer Association contract that is on Wednesday’s Council Agenda

update – topic has been a media frenzy. Some links:

Mayor resigning after threat Good bunch of comments (Monterey Herald)

Cort said that Dilworth wrote in the e-mail that if Cort resigned “for family or other reasons,” that the media and general public wouldn’t need to know about the recall effort.

Mayor Resigning (KSBW)

In his resignation announcement, Cort said he wanted the residents of Pacific Grove to know of the recall effort and the “small band of citizens who are attempting to use bullying tactics and intimidation to get their way.”

Mayor Faces Recall or Resignation (KION)

Cort was re-elected as Mayor in November. According to a letter he wrote, he will resign effective August 31st. He calls the current situation a “negative environment” and the actions by his opponents “intimidating.”

Mayor Vows to Vote on Police Contract
Also the full letter from Dilworth(The Herald)

“Do not construe this as a negotiation,” Dilworth added, “nor is it up for discussion. I am authorized to let you know that if you publicly elect to resign ‘for family’ or any other reason before we begin gathering signatures … the people who have already signed have agreed that the media and the general public never need know about you facing a recall effort.”

Cort said it was ironic that a man who purports to crusade for open government would write such a letter, offering to keep the reasons for his resignation secret.

Hearold Editorial (The Herald)

Over the years, we have questioned many of Dilworth’s assertions, but have agreed with him on many positions. We have enjoyed his theatrical presentations to various boards and commissions. In this case, his tactics are no longer amusing or appropriate.

His note to Cort smacks of a ransom demand.

Does the ‘moran’ line work it’s way in? Small minded? (Coast Weakly)

While I am confident that the voters of Pacific Grove would see through the lies and deception of this small minded group, I do not believe it is in the best interest of the City, and its citizens, to spend the next six to twelve months distracted by a recall effort. The issues facing Pacific Grove, and cities throughout the State, are too important right now to be pushed aside for the personal vendetta of a few disgruntled complainers.

Dilworth plays the victim (The Herald)

Dilworth was outside City Hall before the meeting, where a table with recall petitions had been set up that drew three signatures by the time the council convened. He did not enter the council chambers.

Let’s see, 3 signatures. Dilworth, Zito and their pet raccoon.

Why don’t you do some digging and find out more about Dilworth, whom you have elevated to a level of credibility he never deserve

Perhaps the only positive to arise from this ordeal is that Mr. Dilworth’s true colors have been exposed.

Mr. Dilworth lives from a trust fund with a job as “director” of his self-aggrandizing group, HOPE (Hating Other PEople?

Letters From The Editor – Feast Of Lanterns – Fun Or Racist?

Every year, right on time come the letters calling the Feast Of Lanterns a celebration of fascist oppression. Followed by rebuttals. Over in Salinas it’s the same at Rodeo season with the animal huggers…

Fo l2002 Belly Dancers

July 27, Dale writes:

I find the irony of the Festival of Lanterns too much to bear. Living on the Peninsula my whole life, I noticed that strange little festival in P.G. where people parade around in Chinese clothing. Sometimes, to me, it seemed like a “mockery” of Chinese.

July 29, Diana replies:

The festival is not about a group of people who lived on the Peninsula and were, yes, indeed persecuted. As stated at the onset of the evening festivities, the “tale” (that denotes fantasy, does it not?) takes place in ancient China, and is clearly presented as a fantasy tale, much like Cinderella or other fantasy tales.

8/1, Jeffery adds:

The letter the other day that said Pacific Grove is celebrating a tradition of an oppressed people from 100-plus years ago really made me laugh. Tell me who hasn’t been oppressed? I’m half Irish, so should I tell everyone to stop celebrating St. Patrick’s Day because the Irish were sent into slums straight off their ships from Ireland? The Irish were treated as bad as any culture in U.S. history, and they, like the Chinese Americans, have prevailed.

Here’s To You City Leaders

Stability is crumbling, Arnie is taking our tax dollars, you gave away the Mvsevm, town’s going broke, citizens are turning out in droves over where to park cars so they can walk dogs, and where are they? On vacation.

Corona

The city hasn’t had a permanent city manager since December, and the recruitment has taken months longer than expected. Interim City Manager Charlene Wiseman agreed to extend her six-month term by two months, but has indicated she won’t stay beyond August.

The leadership void was underscored in mid-July, when both Wiseman and Mayor Dan Cort were away on overlapping two-week vacations.
