Tree Ordinance Sent Back To Morons

Admin was recently sent a postcard about a missing tree or two. But it’s missing the target like so many other things the city aims at. The letter is addressed to “Homeowner” at the intended address. Nice gesture, but the homeowner does not live there.

The ordinance was last reviewed 4½ years ago, said committee Vice Chairman Thom Akeman, and the current version was adopted by the City Council in September 2007.

Resident Georgia Booth, who was issued a tree removal permit and crossed swords with Akeman during his compliance inspection of her property last fall, said she has found two versions of the ordinance online, with strikeouts and additions. Others who attended the committee meeting said they didn’t have computers in their homes and needed printed copies.

Hear-Old Editorial – Tree Posse

Is the tree ordinance enforcement by newcomer Thom “Belly” Akeman a sign of the true mission of the green and sustainable movement that Mayor Cort endorses: The end of personal property rights?

Appropriately designed to promote addition to the urban forest rather than deletion, it generally requires the planting of two replacement trees for each one removed, a provision that rankles the side that does not care for the ordinance.

Adding to the tensions, the ordinance-friendly side apparently took it upon itself to set out on inspection missions to determine to what extent the provisions were being honored or dishonored. Though it does not require any significant intrusion to determine whether a tree exists, that has set off loud allegations of trespass and warrantless search

Beware Of Thom Ache-Man’s Tree Posse

P.G. newcomer and former Hear-old reporter is out busting anyone who’s cut down a tree and not replaced it. He has absolutely no authority to do so. Should be removed from committee.

Acheman Book

P.G. Beautification and Natural Resources Committee member Thom Akeman told residents if they didn’t comply the city’s tree ordinance — which includes replanting two trees when one is removed- they faced penalties.

And Mayor Dan Cort said he heard from several people who thought Akeman specifically overstepped his role as a city volunteer.

“There were several letters and emails that I got from some of the people he visited and from their friends who felt it was something he shouldn’t do,” Cort said.

Though Cort said he understands the frustration and desire by some citizens to speed up city work, he said any sort of enforcement effort should be left to city employees.

“Burn artificial logs” Pacific Grove resident Rena Henderson writes:

I used to enjoy a nice, crackling fire as much as the next person. But I’ll never burn wood again. I now know how intrusive and destructive wood fires are to our neighbors. If causing your neighbor’s home to smell like an ashtray is not enough to convince you, then consider a few facts.

The particulate matter in wood smoke is so small that windows and doors cannot keep it out — even in energy-efficient, weather-tight homes. A study by the University of Washington showed that 50 to 70 percent of the outdoor levels of wood smoke entered neighboring homes. An EPA study found similar results.

Wood smoke contains carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, sulfur dioxide and various irritant gases that can scar the lungs. It also contains chemicals known or suspected to be carcinogens.

Well those ‘artificial logs’ contain paraffin wax. How about listing a few toxins found in paraffin wax, including toluene, benzene, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and naphthalene–substances found in paint, lacquer and varnish removers to fill the air?

Tree Kills Woman – In SF

(KTVU 2 News)

SAN FRANCISCO — A woman is dead following a freak accident in which a fallen branch from a Redwood tree struck her near Stern Grove in San Francisco Monday.

The woman, who was possibly in her 50s, was letting her dog into her Subaru Outback in a parking lot off Sloat Boulevard at Sigmund Stern Grove when the branch fell and struck her and the car around 11:30 a.m.

Eco-Freaks Giving Away Stash Of Trees

Sustainable Pacific Grove, a volunteer group undertaking projects to help the city become more self-reliant and sustainable, and Trees for PG plan to erase the carbon footprint of the city’s annual Good Old Days celebration with trees — seedlings and adults — planted around the city after next month’s festival.

This does not sound like a good idea.

They will block the sun from the solar panels!

Ronald Reagan said they cause pollution!

Police will run innocent suspects into them.

They are killing the tourists.

Thank Apollo, Solar Permit Fee Hike Rejected

The Pacific Grove City Council Wednesday rejected a bid to increase development permit fees by 15 percent and voted unanimously to cut drastically the fees homeowners pay for going solar. City manager Jim Colangelo recommended tacking on a 15 percent long-range planning fee on all development permits, something the council said needed more public input.

Only a “handful” of P.G. residents each year apply for a solar permits, Colangelo said.

Solar in P.G? That makes about as much sense as drawing heat from the bay or milking raccoons for sustainable protein sources.

Over in Santa Clara, there is a war between two neighbors. Get this, the Earth loving ones with the solar panels are suing to get the next door neighbor to CUT DOWN their redwood trees because they block the panels . .

A judge ordered Carolynn Bissett Treanor and her husband Richard Treanor, who live on the 1500 block of Benton Street in Sunnyvale, to trim or move two redwood trees on the north side of their property because they shade Mark Vargas’ solar panel installation, which is over the fence on the 3700 block of Benton Street in Santa Clara.

More Trees – More Pollution?

“Trees for PG” will hold a tree planting day in George Washington Park beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday. More than 300 trees were donated by “Joe Fletcher Presents” as part of the Monterey Music Summit’s carbon offset campaign. Volunteers should bring a shovel and gloves.

But Ronald Reagan was right – trees cause pollution!

According to a study by the University of Helsinki, coniferous forests that is to say, those composed of trees such as pines release nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere that combine with other pollutants to form smog.

Mayor Dan Cort Hands Out Polluting Pine Trees

And not only do they pollute, they will block the sun from his solar panels. So here, have a free tree but don’t plant it near Cort’s house.

Pacific Grove Mayor Dan Cort is thinking globally, but acting locally. He and his wife, Beth, have donated 500 Monterey pine seedlings to be planted after the Good Old Days Celebration this month as a way to offset carbon dioxide generated during the event, which brings hundreds of vehicles and thou sands of visitors to town.

But Ronald Regan was right – trees cause pollution!

According to a study by the University of Helsinki, coniferous forests that is to say, those composed of trees such as pines release nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere that combine with other pollutants to form smog.

Several scientists and environmentalists contacted by the Associated Press for comment did not dispute the finding, though it contradicts the “conventional wisdom” that forests reduce pollution. Those who commented countered that forest emissions are part of the Earth’s natural balance, whereas man-made pollution is an addition and therefore an avoidable health hazard.

Dangerous Trees To Be Chopped Down

Arborist quit

City Manager Jim Colangelo said West Coast Arborists will remove the trees in December at a cost of $65,000. The firm will focus on trees that need to be cut down using cranes, while city employees will focus on less expensive tree-cutting, he said.

Residents who were originally critical of the plan to cut down 200 trees said on Wednesday that they were happy with the process and that the council members went to look at the trees.

Jean Anton, chairwoman of the city’s beautification and natural resources committee, praised the council members for going to the park. In her four years on the committee, she’s never seen that happen.
