Substainable Pacific Grove To Take Over Safeway?

Mayor Cort thinks that adding ‘substainable features’ to a business is somehow beneficial. Maybe more morons will shop there. Disagree and maybe they will impose eminent domain to take over the property and ruin Forest Hill too.

Cort says the city-owned Bathhouse, golf clubhouse and golf links should be tapped to make more money. The city should encourage the Safeway on Forest Avenue to expand and add green features, he says, and look for more opportunities to use philanthropy for public services.

Counterfeit Money Passed At Safeway

Fake Money Perps

Police arrested three Seaside residents suspected of passing fake $100 bills, Pacific Grove P.D. detective Adam Sepagan said this week, while U.S. Secret Service agents are working to determine who manufactured the fraudulent notes.

According to police, 21-year-old Marquise Legaux received the counterfeit cash from 31-year-old Laura Long and then exchanged it for real money in the register at his job at the Pacific Grove Safeway. Jimmy Alexander, a 32-year-old Seaside resident who is on probation, is also accused of passing a fake $100 bill at Safeway through Legaux.

In this case, thieves used chemicals to wash the ink off of $5 bills and then overlaid them with the design from a $100 bill using high-quality printers and copiers.

Because the paper is genuine, the fake bills feel real to the touch, and the special pens used by retailers to verify the paper’s quality indicate they are real.

Safeway is becoming our own little crime center on the hill.

Marquise Legaux, 21, and Laura Long, 31, of Seaside were taken into custody Dec. 23 with the help of the Secret Service, and officers of the Monterey County Probation Department, Seaside, Monterey and Carmel police.

Pacific Grove police detective Adam Sepagan said Legaux passed the fake bills by exchanging them for real money from the cash register at a retail store where he worked.

Safeway Parking Lot Robber Gets 24 Years

Think he’ll really serve all that time? Doubtful. He served time for a 1991 murder and was out on the street robbing people in 2005.

A Salinas man who robbed a woman outside the Safeway store in Pacific Grove has been sentenced to 24 years in prison, the District Attorney’s Office announced Friday.

Pablo Castaneda, 42, was convicted by a jury in August for the December 2005 armed robbery of a female customer in the grocery store parking lot. The robber took her purse at gunpoint.

How he will fare with the gangs in prison for his prior experience?

A man who once walked away from the Nuestra Familia gang was convicted Tuesday of the 2005 armed robbery of a Pacific Grove shopper.

Pablo Castaneda, who has been the target of repeated slaying attempts since he dropped out of the gang in 1997, faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison when he is sentenced on Oct. 12.

In addition to the robbery charge, the jury convicted Castaeda of being a felon in possession of a firearm, receiving stolen property and commercial burglary, the latter two charges in relation to his use of a cell phone and gift cards that were inside the victim’s purse.

After a separate hearing, the panel also found that Castaneda was previously convicted of possession of cocaine for sale and voluntary manslaughter, and that in each case less than five years elapsed between his release from prison and his next felony conviction.

A man arrested in connection with the armed robbery of a Pacific Grove grocery shopper Friday is a former Nuestra Familia gang member who has been a target of slaying attempts by the gang since 1997.

At 7 p.m. Friday, a 37-year-old woman was loading groceries into her car in the parking lot of the Safeway store on Forest Avenue in Pacific Grove. The woman felt someone tugging at her purse from behind, officers said, and she turned to face a man in a black ski mask pointing a revolver at her.

The man took the woman’s purse and jumped into a car driven by a woman, police said. The car sped off on the Holman Highway before officers arrived. But a witness described the car and a partial license number to police, said Cmdr. Darius Engles.
