The only thing more constant than fog in Pacific Grove is Moe Ammar.

The 56-year-old has outlasted six city managers, five police chiefs, seven mayors and dozens of other chamber executives in neighboring communities.

“I’ll stay as long as I’m wanted,” he said two weeks ago while eating at Vivolo’s Chowder House. “I want to serve this special community that has embraced me.”

Lets all embrace the stupid things Moe says

October 10, 1998 – Moe comments on the community Christmas Tree “That’s got to be the ugliest tree I’ve ever seen,”

February 4, 2008 – Moe compares the blighted transient serving P.G. of now with the former city of homes and families. “We’re about the same as we were 50 years ago,” Moe says.

April 7, 2006 Moe responds to a tasteless “get naked” weight loss ad and a nude girl on a skateboard ad in the Good Old Days tabloid. “There was nothing about it that jumped out at me at first,”

February 25, 2009 – Lighthouse Avenue closes so AT$T can film a commercial “It was the best thing that happened to P.G. this year”

July 16, 2009 – Moe praises Cal Am Water and proudly states he does not buy American cars Moe Ammar, who praised the German-owned corporation: “Cal Am has been a good neighbor, a good corporate citizen. That is why I drive a Mercedes Benz instead of a GM.”

October 29, 2009 – Moe is shocked that not everyone that visits P.G. can afford to eat at overpriced bistros. “I actually heard some tourists talking one day and they said: ‘Instead of going to Fandango, let’s grab some sandwiches at the farmers market,’”

March 11, 2010 – Moe likens coming to an agreement with the Farmers Market to a sexual experience. “We all had orgasms! It was heavenly,” P.G. Chamber of Commerce Moe Ammar jokes.

April 27, 2010 – Moe discusses anti depression through the pimping the town. “We need it in this economy so many unemployed people and with all the depression.

June 13, 2010 – Seeing a pattern? Every Moe scheme is the “greatest thing evar” Moe Ammar believes the U.S. Open will be “the greatest thing that could happen” to the local economy.

April 10, 2011 – A zoo with no animals, just a pack of hucksters. “We have top-name bands and entertainment. Look at downtown on Lighthouse. It’s a zoo.”

April 29, 2011 – Acknowledges the blight he puts up in the name of attracting tourists. “While the sign is ugly,” Ammar concedes, “it does attract people.”

February 22, 2013 – Totally unnecessary street cosmetics kill businesses – greatest thing evar! Pavels, Grove Market, PG Florist all are losing customers and Moe Ammar says “This is the best thing that’s happened since I’ve been here, period!”.

Can’t afford the rent. But Moammar has the money to reopen another thrift shop on the same property and continue his quest to be the Central Ave Gateway to P.G.

“The recession hit and I could slowly see our numbers start to decrease, and whereas we were averaging a 1,000 to 1,500 a day. I mean we were having 30 dollar days, 15 dollar days,” explained Strauch.

And that wasn’t going to be enough to pay for her $4,500 a month rent. After negotiations with her landlord didn’t work out, there was no other choice but to close. It was news longtime customers didn’t take lightly.

“It’s hard to believe but the current uses on the books date back to the 1950s. Perhaps it’s time to re-consider what the laws are,” said Chamber of Commerce President Moe Ammar.
Franchise restaurants bring in big business and tax revenue. That means you could see anything from McDonalds to Subway opening in America’s last home town.
“Personally, I think there is a need for the younger generation for places to hang out…and opening up later hours. There’s a lot of ‘mom and pop’s’ right now that close at 5 or 6,” said Ammar.
Some downtown shops we spoke with aren’t worried about new competition. They think they have loyal customers who prefer the small town feel. But one Burger Joint, 17th Street Grille, is concerned the change would mean the end of her business.

“This is a great piece of news,” said Moe Ammar, president of the Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce. “People are still investing in commercial real estate.”

Ammar said he understands ROIC plans to operate and manage the center.

Moe, stay away from Forest Hill. I don’t want all the stores to turn to resale shops and overpriced restaurants.

Sure, America’s Last Hometown still struggles with out-of-control CalPERS costs and bickering political camps, but real estate values have held relatively steady. And the downtown commercial vacancy rate has dropped from about 25 percent last year to half of that, according to P.G. Chamber of Commerce President Moe Ammar.

Rabobank recently filled the former World Savings Bank space on Lighthouse Avenue, he says. And The Alliance on Aging just signed a lease to run a high-end consignment shop in the old Hallmark building, which sat empty for almost five years. Other new retailers include a doll shop, a teen clothing store and two art galleries.

Nothing for locals to see, move along.

Ugly Tourist Information Sign Is Non Compliant?

Even if you do get a permit, you don’t have to abide by the conditions? Can’t wait before the corner looks like a San Jose used car lot with banners, flags, whirygigs and stuff.

Tourist Misinformation

“While the sign is ugly,” Ammar concedes, “it does attract people.”The sign isn’t too far off the shape of the old China Garden sign, except it’s not arched like the old one. And it isn’t the marker the city originally OK’d.

“It is not the sign that was approved through the zoning process,” Frutchey said.

Good Old Days 2011 – Moe Said WHAT?

Thai Stick?

“It’s the largest arts and crafts show in the tri-county area,” Ammar said. “We have top-name bands and entertainment. Look at downtown on Lighthouse. It’s a zoo.”

A throng of people walked along the noisy, smoky Lighthouse Avenue surrounded by the smells of cooking corn dogs, bratwurst, garlic fries, Thai sticks and calamari. The food vendors shared space with arts and crafts booths, children’s face painting, bounce houses and rides.

Forgive KSBW for the poor fact checking, there must not be enough gang stories in Salinas to report on.

The building is on Central Avenue well into the P.G. city limits. After reading about how much the restaurant tried to keep it’s current location, the perception is that the property owner is a friend of Moe and nothing could make them consider any other use of the property.

Plus $125,000 of the taxpayer’s money is going toward this turkey.

The Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce is making a move to the China Garden Restaurant on Lighthouse Avenue after 75 years on Central Avenue.

Moe Ammar, of the Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce, said a lot of research went into finding a new home where there was a lot of car and foot traffic.

Last week, the Pacific Grove City Council approved to have a portion of the money from the city’s hotel tax to pay for the tourist information center, which will cost about $125,000.

The chamber will continue to keep some of its administrative offices in its old building.

Make sure businesses are ready for major events that come to Pacific Grove. Refer visitors to events, places and businesses in town. Emphasize environmentally friendly events.

“Now we know who is in charge of what. We’ve met each other. Now we’ve got to work together,” chamber president Moe Ammar said after the two-hour meeting, which had a 27-member panel and 40 people in the audience. The panel included people from the hospitality industry, arts community and city officials.

Ammar, who has led the chamber for 18 years, said he holds the gatherings when the economy slips. The last such event was 10 years ago.

He last held any marketing summit a decade ago and has not noticed the economy since then? The best idea I think is to find a new Chamber Of Commerce leader.

As people described their organization’s events, Frutchey said there were some festivities he wasn’t aware of and suggested a master calendar for Pacific Grove events.

Great, we have a come-here City Manager that does not know about the quirky civic events in P.G., or what resources to turn to and find out.

It is the economy. Need to emphasize value for the dollar, which admittedly P.G. has very little of.
