Running For Council Causes Global Warming!

Deborah Lindsay has announced that her campaign will be “carbon neutral.” The green radio host plans to offset carbon dioxide emissions from campaign-related driving, marketing, merchandise and office equipment by creating a community solar project.

Right, solar in foggy forested Pacific Grove. The woman is a kook.

P.G. To Report It’s Greenhouse Gases

Twenty-one cities were announced yesterday, with at least nine others expected to take part in the pilot project. Each city will assemble comparable carbon emission data within their jurisdiction’s operations–for instance, fire department, ambulance and police services, municipal buildings, waste transport and other services the cities provide or activities over which they exercise budgetary control.

Like the businesses who have joined the CDP program, the cities involved will be able to learn from peers about dealing with the risks and opportunities climate change presents.

The other cities participating include: Albany, NY; Albuquerque, NM; Anchorage, AK; Arlington, VA; Burlington, VT; Dubuque, IA; Edina, MN; Fairfield, IA; Haverford, PA; Las Vegas, NV; New Orleans, LA; North Little Rock, AR; Pacific Grove, CA; Park City, UT; Rohnert Park, CA; Saint Paul, MN; Washougal, WA; and West Palm Beach, FL.

How much greenhouse gas is emitted by Sustainable P.G.’s The Brown Green Spot barbecue pits and tiki torches? Them’s hydrocarbons brah!

Green, Carbon Neutral, Sustainable, Ghetto

Nothing like making your image of being green and offsetting some CO2 with flower pots outside the business. Live flowers to brighten the day.

But remember that most people don’t give a hoot and use your flower pots for cigarette butts and other trash:

After the flowers die from neglect it gets worse:

Not sure who takes care of these things – it’s in the 500 bock in front of Monte Cafe.

Styrofoam & plastic ware is banned from restaurants.

Any way you spin it, whatever take-out is packaged in will still be overflowing from hotel dumpsters.

The ban applies to city contractors and special-event promoters using disposable food-service ware. Foods prepared or packaged outside Pacific Grove are exempt, as are ice chests, coolers, other containers meant to be reused, and shipping containers.

Ryan Kenny of the American Chemistry Council told the council that supporters of the ban did not provide scientific evidence that it does more harm to the environment than other packaging or food service containers, and that switching to alternatives “will replace one type of litter with another.” Organic containers buried in landfills, he said, produce methane gas that can harm the environment.

Joy Colangelo – Darwin Theory In Practice

I’ve been carless for three months after my car caught fire while being repaired at the dealer. I ride my bike daily and have lost 10 pounds, which I really didn’t need to lose. I eat more than my teenage children, who are junior Olympians.

I canceled my auto insurance. I fly by gas pumps and have a cholesterol ratio that defies science. But I don’t wear a helmet. And I don’t use bike lanes.

Okaaaaaay. In today’s Letters From The Editor, Greg Lindsey writes:

As a former traffic cop, I could only shake my head after reading Joy Colangelo’s column Sunday.

Apparently, she doesn’t understand the traffic laws applicable to bicycles. Riders are required to ride as far right on the roadway as possible. The only two general circumstances where a bicyclist can be out in traffic is when they’re making a left turn or are riding as fast as the traffic is moving.

Just one question – how do we enforce such a law? Is there going to be a packaging posse kicking in kitchen doors on the hunt for taboo table wares? It could be a cruel way to drive someone crazy – go to Smart’n’Final, buy a package of clamshell to-go plates and stencil the name of an eatery on them and leave at bus stops and such.

Pacific Grove banned food service containers made of polystyrene and plastic utensils at restaurants — cups, plates, bowls and takeout boxes — by unanimous vote of its City Council.

Violations will be punished as an infraction, with a warning the first time and a $100 fine for a second citation. The person paying the fine can use the $100 to buy biodegradable food containers rather than write a check to the city and show a receipt for the purchase to city officials.

Fool Others That You Are Going Green: Get Help From PG Restaurant

Passionfish owner Cindy Walter and the California Restaurant Association, Monterey County Health Department, Environmental Health Division Stormwater & Education Alliance will present a free “Green Business and Storm Water Education Workshop,”

Walter’s Pacific Grove restaurant is Monterey County’s first certified green restaurant, with a strict purchase policy that includes sustainable, organic, reusable, and recyclable products. The business has also instituted a number of economical and environmentally-friendly business practices that include creative reuse of business supplies and the use of natural, chemical-free cleaning supplies.

I call B.S. You should see the mountains of landfill-destined garbage and rubbish that this restaurant generates. Look at the grease encroaching the sidewalk leaking from their overflowing dumpster. See the other trash cans blocking the sidewalk. This “green” business practices is a farce.

Eco-Freaks Giving Away Stash Of Trees

Sustainable Pacific Grove, a volunteer group undertaking projects to help the city become more self-reliant and sustainable, and Trees for PG plan to erase the carbon footprint of the city’s annual Good Old Days celebration with trees — seedlings and adults — planted around the city after next month’s festival.

This does not sound like a good idea.

They will block the sun from the solar panels!

Ronald Reagan said they cause pollution!

Police will run innocent suspects into them.

They are killing the tourists.
