Dogs And Their Owners – Crazy?

Driving to a place to walk the dog. Kind of like taking an escalator to the gym.

Over the past three years, the public has been illegally parking and driving in the fire lane area at the Congress Avenue entrance to Rip Van Winkle Open Space.

They have also been parking along the road and driving over tree roots. Alternate access to the open space can only be gained by paying a fee ($9.50) to enter the Country Club Gate to Pebble Beach, or parking in the Methodist Church parking lot on Sunset Drive and fording a gulley.
According to the dog walkers, many of whom are older people with constrained walking abilities, these other options are not workable.

What Recession? We Have A Luxury Spa For Dogs

Dogs have more accessibility than the disabled around here. Watch your step.

The promenade, Cannery Row’s first Holiday Pet Parade, was a benefit for the SPCA of Monterey County and the Animal Friends Rescue Project.

For the canine competitors, adorned in their holiday best, it paid big dividends to finish first. The grand prize was a luxury spa appointment at Chateau Le Paws at the American Tin Cannery. Their owners got the human equivalent from the Energia Spa at the new Intercontinental Clement Monterey Hotel.

Olga Ospina Suing For Emotional Distress Over Dead Dog

Olga

IN A lawsuit that seeks to set a new precedent for damages, a local news anchorwoman is suing the owner of a Labrador for emotional distress after the dog mauled her Maltese last year in front of the Pacific Grove post office.

. . Ospina is also seeking something California courts haven’t awarded before. She wants money for “severe emotional distress” she claims she suffered as a result of her dog being attacked.

Heretofore, “the law limits emotional distress damages to being in the presence of a close human relative who gets injured,” said Ospina’s Monterey attorney, Chuck Warner. “This is unique.”

Courts in most states, including California, view pets as personal property and limit compensation to the fair market value of the pet — including the pedigree of the animal, the purchase price and other criteria.

More P.G. Dogs In Trouble

Dogs doing what dogs do, either being social or defending their territory. It’s crazy to think that they will obey voice commands.

In the December attack, the two German shepherds, Lola, 2, and Bear, 11, owned by Monty Reitz, jumped Reitz’ 4-foot fence and ran toward Tule, a 2-year-old female Labrador owned by Casey Conover Houston, and began biting the dog, according to Davis’ report. Houston had been visiting her parents, the Conovers, who live next door to Reitz on Crocker Avenue.

In order to protect her dog, Houston said she “threw herself on top of her dog and screamed for help,” Davis wrote.

Although Tule didn’t suffer any lasting injuries, Houston said since the attack, the dog has had a difficult time socializing with other animals. “She acts a lot more scared now,” Houston said.

Could the dog be scared that whenever another dog comes near that a person is going to dive on top of her and scream? And when the rescue dogs try to drag her out from under the screaming woman, the woman fights off the rescuers?

Dog Owners Blame Others For Everything

Mindy Barker? Sorry, gotta laugh at the pun.

Can a cause be not having your pet on a leash in an area that is not your private property? Sorry to sound cold, but would you let your dog run loose on Holman Highway too?

Owners pursue cause of dog’s death, mad about barely buried carcasses.

Mindy Barker believes what killed her dog was barely buried a few feet from a popular hiking trail used by many dog owners in the Del Monte Forest.

That day, Bode bounded into an area with fresh bulldozer tracks, soft ground, traces of black plastic bags poking through the dirt and the strong smell of decomposing flesh, she said. Before her husband could stop Bode, the dog picked up something and gulped it down. A few days later, Bode’s health started to decline.

Pacific Grove Is Going To The Dogs

Professor Toro, Monterey’s original blogger writes:

On a recent Sunday, Conover retrieved her Labrador, Tuly, from her father’s house when a couple of German shepherds attacked and mauled them.

Conover jumped on her dog and tried to protect it from the dogs and, said her father, Kelley, “screamed bloody murder.”

Given a recent high-profile dog incident, the brutal attack of KION-TV news anchor Olga Ospina’s 2-year-old Maltese in front of the Pacific Grove post office, it appears that sleepy little P.G. might have a dog problem.

More like P.G. has a dog owner problem. Where oh where is Prof’s companion Pilon? Has Pilon been replaced by a dog?

Monterey Has $15,000 For A ‘Dog Park’

Monterey’s Dog Park is open for business, thanks to a $15,000 Neighborhood Improvement Program grant and 18 months of lobbying by dog lover and pet boarder Roni Rubinstein.

“Parks and Recreation had it on the books for three years,” Rubinstein said. “There was no opposition — it just needed a site and someone to champion the cause.”

Rubinstein and her rescued cocker spaniel Tara — “she was abandoned at El Estero Park” — started attending Neighborhood Improvement Committee and city Park and Recreation Commission meetings, and toured “a dozen possible sites” for a park where dogs could be allowed to run free and frolic.

Ospina’s suit contends she was denied due process because of the switch from city to state law. It also alleges the hearing officer ignored witnesses’ accounts about which dog attacked. Ospina is seeking attorney’s fees, court costs and unspecified damages.

Her complaint was reviewed in closed session Tuesday by the Pacific Grove City Council. Assistant city attorney Heidi Quinn reported no council action was taken.

Dead Dog Owner Files Lawsuit To Kill Another Dog

Olga

A TV news anchorwoman has filed a lawsuit against the City of Pacific Grove seeking to overturn a ruling that spared a black Labrador believed to have mauled her Maltese to death in front of the Pacific Grove Post Office in July.

In August, a city-appointed hearing officer decided the Labrador, owned by a Southern California woman, should be permanently banished from the city but not euthanized. The dog was returned to its family. But Olga Ospina wanted a different result. “Please help me, put this dog down” she said at the hearing Aug. 16.

Letters From The Editor:

I have lived in Pacific Grove my whole life and choose to live here for the close-knit community the town prides itself on.

I recently encountered a major wake-up call, a dreadful incident which my neighbors chose to ignore or downplay, that deserves attention. Every citizen within this community needs to understand his or her role as a neighbor.

Recently, my miniature dachshund was attacked by a raccoon at night in my yard. In the process of rescuing my dog, I screamed and yelled like I have never before (and I hope to never experience again). While attempting to scare the raccoon with loud vocals, I yelled as loud as I could, “Help!” amidst my dog’s constant screams. Still panicked, I yelled once more, “Somebody help!” After the adrenaline rush ended, I was appalled that NOBODY had come to my aid

Keep your dogs inside. There are raccoons here. There are mountain lions here. Dogs are territorial, pack roaming creatures by nature, they are not smart enough to know when they are out numbered.
