Could Budget Conditions Get Any Worse In Salinas?

When you have our runaway ex-mayor on your team, it’s sure to get foggy.

The committee will recommend cuts and revenue enhancements to the City Council, Donohue said during his state of the budget address last week. The city’s budget now has an estimated deficit of $9.5 million.

So far, Donohue said, the list of committee members includes the following people:

Lino Belli, architect; Lauren Cercone, library commission; Dan Cort, former Pacific Grove mayor; Joyce Cordi, management consultant; Linda English, League of Women Voters; Al Espindola, recreation commission; Anne Frasetto; Jack Harvey, retired HSBC employee; Matt Huerta, Salinas Planning Commission; Peter Kasava, Planning and Permit Committee; Cesar Lara, Monterey Bay Labor Council; John McPherson, Creative Business; Rex McIntosh, Eagle-Bison Neighborhood Association; Brigid McGrath Massie, Police Community Advisory Committee and businesswoman; Ben Ranzenberger, Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital; Martha Real, local business owner; George Rawson, former Indio California police chief; Glorietta Rowland, executive officer for the Coalition of Homeless Service Providers; Sam Teel, Monterey Taxpayers Association; and Les White, former San Jose City Manager.

Wasted $$: Crazy Plan To Refill Reservoir

This was one of the “Runaway Mayor” Dan Cort’s sustainable schemes. Bad idea – especially for the residents that live north of the thing in case of an earthquake.

One reason I do not trust the city with more of my tax money.

A $45,000 study on the feasibility of reactivating California American Water’s empty reservoir in Pacific Grove as a catch basin for storm water runoff and a source of irrigation water for the city’s golf course and parks will be presented Wednesday to the Pacific Grove City Council.

Dan Cort, the former mayor of Pacific Grove, author and expert in urban renewal, will give a presentation on his new book, “Downtown Turnaround: Lessons for a New Urban Landscape,”

Dan will address the urgent need to revitalize forsaken downtown areas and build green communities. In the face of critical economic and environmental challenges, Dan will offer practical solutions that combine sustainability, prosperity and citizen participation.

With the title of temporary mayor, Stilwell seems like a shoo-in to succeed Cort. But she says she’s not interested in the post for personal reasons.

Her pick for mayor is Councilman Bill Kampe. “He would be a great mayor,” she says, citing Kampe’s dedication, financial savvy, business background and time available for public service.

Kampe, for his part, plays modest. He says he was leaning toward appointing Stilwell mayor, but since she’s not interested, he’s willing to serve. “I’m flattered,” he says of Stilwell’s endorsement. “I got into this to serve the city as best I can.”

Councilwoman Lisa Bennett may be a candidate for mayor. Bennett couldn’t be reached, but she has previously told the Weekly she doesn’t plan to run for another term.

Mayor Cort Quits As Promised

Cort declared he would resign early last month after activist David Dilworth and former Councilman Terrance Zito threatened a recall campaign against him if he didn’t resign immediately. Cort said at the time that the threat wasn’t his reason for leaving office.

Dilworth declined to comment on Cort’s resignation or recall plans, and Zito was unavailable.

The appointment of the city manager, which began after previous manager Jim Colangelo resigned in January — is still unresolved.

Now can the town somehow get some leadership? Leadership that has no kooky sustainable agendas, no personal gains, nothing but serious plans to serve the city’s residents first?

PGPD Help Wanted

Engles’ resignation announcement comes just two weeks after Mayor Dan Cort announced his intention to resign by the end of this month. Former City Manager Jim Colangelo retired in January and Wiseman has been performing those duties while the City Council continues efforts to try and recruit a new chief executive officer for the city.

No selection has been made.

The droning swarm of gadflies done him in. He failed to get public comment put to the end through Joy Colon-Jello. Also had no spine – Costello would cut people off at the 3 minute limit.

Cort says his decision to resign is still firm: “I’m not changing my mind.”

While Dilworth’s recall threat isn’t the only reason he’s throwing in the towel, he says, it’s a “symptom” of a persistent lack of civility at P.G. City Council meetings. “I want this to be about respect and dialogue in government,” Cort says. “Meeting after meeting, a small group of people comes and disrupts and threatens our council. It really makes it difficult to get our work done. This insulting, demeaning behavior is something that’s gotta end.”

David Dilworth Apology To “The Community”

But not the to persons attacked. Best way to apologize to the community would be to crawl back under a rock and never emerge.

Pacific Grove resident David Dilworth has issued another e-mail, this time apologizing for his previous e-mail to Mayor Dan Cort that told him to resign or face a recall.

Dilworth would not comment further on the letter, saying it was addressed “to the whole community” and that it speaks for itself.

Says the activist is a symptom that is fracturing the community.

“I deeply regret how my actions have upset good people and I promise to be much more careful of my words and comportment in the future,” Dilworth said in his e-mail to the community.

Cort, however, said Dilworth made no attempt to communicate with him or any other city council member since last week’s original e-mail and said Dilworth wants “the media to forgive him.”
