Rules Are For Others, Not Kampe And Frutchey

Nevermind the humans, close the beach for sea lions.

At a March 5 P.G. City Council meeting, numerous volunteers who help protect the seals urged the city to install bigger fencing to protect them. But before they even spoke, city
manager Tom Frutchey told the council that the city “will go ahead, and even without coastal commission approval, erect a more substantial barrier.” The city installed the lattice fencing not long after the meeting.

Mayor Kampe Has Surgery

Heart? Might have been better to fix the bypass in his head.

Kampe Xray

Pacific Grove Mayor Bill Kampe is recuperating after undergoing heart-bypass surgery this week and likely will be away from city duties for a few weeks.

“I would say at least three weeks,” said Mayor Pro Tempore Robert Huitt on Friday. He will chair the City Council in Kampe’s absence.

The surgery was done Tuesday. It wasn’t triggered by any symptoms the mayor had been experiencing, but by things that came up during a routine exam, he said.

“All indications was that it was successful, and his recovery is going to be great,” Huitt said.

And Mayor Kampe suddenly discovers a letter from PB Co that he didn’t know he had. Perhaps he left it in Dan Cort’s ‘moron’ file.

The council sent a letter to the Pebble Beach Co. and county officials in November listing a number of reasons why neighbors of the project site oppose the location and asking the company to consider an alternative site. The letter asked the company to list all alternative sites considered, why they were rejected, why the company feels the proposed site is superior to other alternatives, and requested information on any studies done on alternative sites.

Earlier this week, Pacific Grove Mayor Bill Kampe said the company actually sent a reply letter, contrary to his statement on Sunday. The letter dated Dec. 20 from company vice president Mark Stilwell, which Kampe said he didn’t discover until Monday, outlined the company’s reasons for choosing the proposed site, but did not address the council’s request for any information about alternative sites..

No New Fines For Providing Alcohol To Kids In P.G.

Would Kampe feel any different if he was ever affected by a underage intoxicated person?

Four of the council members, Alan Cohen, Robert Huitt, Rudy Fischer and Bill Kampe, took exception to a rider on the proposed new city law that would allow cost recovery “for any violation of the Pacific Grove Municipal Code.”

Kampe commented that no one spends their entire childhood to age 21 at all times in the company of an adult, including staying home, and called the original law “a lottery with a penalty instead of a prize.

Pimping The Town To US Open Golf Fans

Welcome To The Crosby

A marketing plan is needed for Pacific Grove’s golf course to build up attendance and prepare for next summer’s U.S. Open tournament at Pebble Beach, the City Council agreed Wednesday.

Mayor pro tem Bill Kampe had previously proposed that the council appoint a five-member ad hoc committee for the task.

But newly appointed Councilman Robert Huitt suggested the job might better be handled by a professional marketer using city resources, including the Recreation Commission, the three golf clubs affiliated with the municipal course, tourist-oriented business groups and economic development groups.

Barely on the job and Huitt is spending like a sailor on shore leave.

Exodus Continues – Vicki Stilwell Quits Council

City Hall Help Wanted

The council also decided Wednesday that Kampe should be appointed mayor pro-tem after Stilwell announced she is resigning effective Friday.

Stilwell said her reasons are strictly personal. She said the economic recession has hit her family hard and they must move out of the area.

To fill the seats of Garcia and Stilwell, the council said it would accept applications until noon Sept. 28. A special council meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 30 to hear from applicants, and appointments will be made.

Typically we go down the list of candidates – this would put Dan Miller & Ken Cueno in the seats..

Nov 2008 election numbers:

CITY COUNCIL

P.G. Mayor Options – Who Will The Next Fool Be?

Do Not Want Cat

With the title of temporary mayor, Stilwell seems like a shoo-in to succeed Cort. But she says she’s not interested in the post for personal reasons.

Her pick for mayor is Councilman Bill Kampe. “He would be a great mayor,” she says, citing Kampe’s dedication, financial savvy, business background and time available for public service.

Kampe, for his part, plays modest. He says he was leaning toward appointing Stilwell mayor, but since she’s not interested, he’s willing to serve. “I’m flattered,” he says of Stilwell’s endorsement. “I got into this to serve the city as best I can.”

Councilwoman Lisa Bennett may be a candidate for mayor. Bennett couldn’t be reached, but she has previously told the Weekly she doesn’t plan to run for another term.

Hear-Old Backs Kampe, Garcia & Cuneo

Vote Machine

This should not be a surprise to anyone who has followed Pacific Grove politics even slightly: All three of the P.G. City Council members with terms ending in November opted not to run for re-election.

It’s also good that a large crop of candidates is competing for the chance to replace the departing trio. All eight are capable, to varying degrees, but three rise to the top: Ken Cuneo, Carmelita Garcia and Bill Kampe.

Calls Susan Goldbeck irrevocably tied to P.G. politics of the past, Dan Miller an activist, Richard Ahart a mystery, Deborah Lindsay narrow focused and says David Dilworth has no credibility.

Pacific Grove voters will vote on two ballot measures: Measure X, calling for a $35 parcel tax for the next five years for the Pacific Grove Unified School District;

Can’t say that I’d support another school tax. That $6,000,000 stadium at PGHS and $1,700,000 district offices tells me that there is plenty enough money going to the school district.
