Traffic Commission Investigating Rowdy Recreation Trail Cyclists

Bicycle Crash

I was constantly reminded of the rules by the guy in the Tam O’Shanter when taking my kids on the trail. Set one foot on the blacktop when he’s around and it was a verbal harassment.

Commission Chairman George Shayne told the City Council on Wednesday that the commission would like to see Pacific Grove bring its trail regulations in line with those of other cities the trail passes through.

He said Pacific Grove is the only city that cites pedestrians for walking on the bike path of its section of the Rec Trail and “it isn’t working.”

Instead, he said, some bicyclists seem to have a sense of entitlement and resent pedestrians who stray from the footpath to the paved bike path as they whiz by.

The commission has received complaints since the 1990s of bicyclists yelling and screaming at pedestrians, and it even got one report of a cyclist slapping a female pedestrian on the back of the head as he rode by.

Letters From The Editor – Bicyclists

If it’s not enough getting assaulted or mugged, now it’s harassment by the bike riders.
Bicycle Crash

Recently, my family and I have taken to the Monterey Rec Trail for some relaxing bike riding. The first outing led to my children getting a quick lesson in profanity from a bicyclist who was going at an excessive speed. The second came with another bicyclist crashing into my daughter, leaving her bleeding. Sure, he turned around but never once came back to ensure she was OK.

I find it despicable that these bikers think that they own this Rec Trail and that they are performing the Tour De France. After summoning a police officer he informed me that this Rec Trail is for walkers, runners, and bikers of all ages.

Joy Colangelo – Darwin Theory In Practice

I’ve been carless for three months after my car caught fire while being repaired at the dealer. I ride my bike daily and have lost 10 pounds, which I really didn’t need to lose. I eat more than my teenage children, who are junior Olympians.

I canceled my auto insurance. I fly by gas pumps and have a cholesterol ratio that defies science. But I don’t wear a helmet. And I don’t use bike lanes.

Okaaaaaay. In today’s Letters From The Editor, Greg Lindsey writes:

As a former traffic cop, I could only shake my head after reading Joy Colangelo’s column Sunday.

Apparently, she doesn’t understand the traffic laws applicable to bicycles. Riders are required to ride as far right on the roadway as possible. The only two general circumstances where a bicyclist can be out in traffic is when they’re making a left turn or are riding as fast as the traffic is moving.
