First it was the tattoo and piercing parlors, now this?

That’s Hospital-iano!
Barely open for two weeks and PG Police, ambulance and PG fire department were seen in front of Favaloro’s Big Night Bistro at around 7:30 Thursday night the 29th. Somebody was wheeled out on a stretcher and taken away in the ambulance. The ambulance left with the siren and lights going.

What that was about, more family squabbles or just some bad clams?
In a recent rare visit to Cannery Row I noticed that there are very few landmarks left. The cannery buildings are all but gone and replaced with replicas. What those that are still there have changed drastically to accommodate imprisoned fish, tourists and more commerce. Gone forever are original bohemian places like Odyssey Records, Kalisa’s, Capone’s Warehouse and The 812 Cinema. One thing that has not really physically changed in over 35 years is the radio station offices, studio and transmitter that broadcasts at 1240 AM. Once Monterey’s only top 40 pop station KMBY, it’s now a talk radio format known as KNRY. Back in the 1970s, friends and I would often visit the studio, whether to collect prizes won in the many call in contests, or just see the DJ working at the turntables. Here’s a photo collection of the studio as it is today.
Antenna sits on shoreline of Macabee Beach.

A long way up

Danger! Rock and Roll RF!

Coverage from that antenna:

Sign over the door.

Sign on street.

Entry Way.

Going upstairs. Everything is the same as I remember from the 70s.

Reach the top, go around the corner . .

The Hallway. Door to studios, observation window, door to offices.

Here’s where you’d see real live DJs spinning 45s like The Monkees or Martha And The Vandellas.

If you went into the office lobby, you could pick up the latest survey of the “Top 12 plus 40”

Time to leave. Going downstairs you’d notice the low ceiling. The redwood ceiling is from the 70s era.

Thanks for the memories. Step out and back out into the phony charm.

Seen this for a couple of weeks – A pile of garbage in a planter that is next to a dumpster on 16th street. After a few days a box with an address shows who the litterbug is – PG Juice n Java.

Here’s the dump

Box with address.

Clean that up!
March 11 this year. But Pacific Grove cares not for national nonsense – If you are approaching from the south, we are already 2 hours ahead .

See failed council member candidate David Dilworth at the podium on the meeting of December 6?

Spouting propaganda about “light pollution” in large cities masking out the twinkling stars at night. Makes about as much sense in foggy P.G. as solar heat. You’d think he’d bring this up in the fall or spring when the skies are not fogged in or filled with storm clouds. But no, he tries to make you feel guilty for having Christmas lights up. Guilty for admiring Candy Cane Lane, as if it was killing of otters or causing monarchs to go sterile.
I used to think Dil was just another kook. Now I think he is just another America hater. I’m going to Walmart and buying a few hundred C7s on strings for the yard, eaves, trees and whatever else needs to be Christmasy.
Site of the former Shnarleys Pizza. It was overpriced anyway, preyed on tourists I guess.

There’s another ‘Bistro’. Must be the latest fad name for tiny restaurant, with a name that implies “Yes, we have alcohol”. People in PG are sometimes still afraid of the old blue laws.
Bistros, Trattorias, Taquerias, Pubs, Sports Bars. Whatever.
Scotch Bistro – er Bakery has scraped the “Scotch Bakery” lettering from the windows, readying the former landmark to disappear for good.

Now the historical signage is gone

Announcement

And you know the sun’s settin’ fast,
And just like they say, nothing good ever lasts.
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye,
But hold on to your lover,
‘Cause your heart’s bound to die.
Go on now and say goodbye to our town, to our town.
Can’t you see the sun’s settin’ down on our town, on our town,
Goodnight.
Iris Dement “Our Town”
Every year it snows in Caledonia Park no matter what nature’s weather is. Here’s the mountain on the basketball court, there’s more fun in the rest of the park with bounce houses, pony rides and visit that fat guy in the red suit . . .

Leaving Lighthouse in PG there’s Gaspers Jewelers. Now where do I get a watch battery replaced with a cheerful, no sneer service?
