Eeeek! Jumbo Flying Aggressive Squid Lurking Off Coast!

Humbolt Squid

Thousands of jumbo flying squid — aggressive 5-foot-long sea monsters with razor-sharp beaks and toothy tentacles — have invaded the shallow waters off San Diego, spooking scuba divers and washing up dead on tourist-packed beaches.

The carnivorous calamari, which can grow up to 100 pounds, came up from the depths last week and swarms of them roughed up unsuspecting divers. Some divers report tentacles enveloping their masks and yanking at their cameras and gear.

Stories of too-close encounters with the alien like cephalopods have chased many veteran divers out of the water and created a whirlwind of excitement among the rest, who are torn between their personal safety and the once-in-a-lifetime chance to swim with the deep-sea giants.

Watsonville Chimes In On P.G. Police

When I first moved to the area, I was stopped by a Pacific Grove policeman. This time, I was truly curious.

As I drove away, the warning I understood was that older-model cars might be stopped and searched at random by Pacific Grove police.

Watsonville’s police force is dedicated to public safety, not collecting taxes. My interactions with Monterey and Pacific Grove have left me to believe that creating revenue is the priority. Perhaps they just don’t have enough to do. Perhaps those cities could save some money in work force reductions.

Me, I will be wary and do less shopping and eating in Monterey County. I can’t afford $250 toll roads.

Maybe that’s why the stabbings and gang shootings happen in Watsonville and not P.G.?
A few recent stories out of W-ville:
8/3 A homeless man and six Watsonville gang members, age 12-19, have been arrested in connection with the April slaying of another homeless man.

Mothra

Well, when California farm products are banned elsewhere and the ag business goes to heck, we can thank ecoterrorists like David Dilworth for being kind and gentle to the moths.

State officials are calling the invasive light brown apple moth’s recent havoc on two Watsonville berry crops the first “significant damage” since the pest was discovered in California two years ago.

Bolda wrote it was “imperative” growers undertake control measures to inimize the chance of LBAM damage. “The increasing problem of the light brown apple moth — epiphyas postvittana — should be of great interest to all berry growers in the Santa Cruz and Monterey County production district,” Bolda wrote in a blog a week earlier. About 2,400 square miles are under quarantine in California because of the light brown apple moth threat to crops.

City Suing Aliottis

Are all Aliottis this dishonest?

The city of Monterey is suing a local couple for allegedly trying to make a big profit on their subsidized affordable housing.

According to the lawsuit, Gaspare and Rose Ann Aliotti lied to the city and rented out the Yerba Buena Court condominium they purchased in 1985 so they could wait out deed restrictions and sell it at market rates.

Gaspare Aliotti referred questions to his wife. Rose Ann Aliotti referred inquiries to her attorney, whom she declined to identify, saying she’d deliver a message. No one responded.

The Truth Is Way Out There

I Want To Believe Moss Landing

According to the sheriff’s log, a deputy took a report Monday from an Elkhorn resident who was upset that someone entered his unlocked spaceship and ransacked the vehicle.

Fortunately, the log noted dryly, “Nothing was missing, and there was no damage to the laser gun.”

But the truth about the unusual crime was neither “out there” nor inside the troubled mind of a deluded spaceship owner.

Cmdr. Mike Richards said he discovered the prank after a reporter requested more information about the spaceship burglary.

Revenue – Burglar Alarm Fees

Palo Alto is collecting $250 for late filed burglar alarm permits. For a city that not only fails to collect from businesses that park all day long in 2 hour spots, does P.G. even collect alarm fees?

Art Sklaroff is one of more than a dozen residents who showed up for an administrative hearing earlier this month to contest the fine, which he said came without warning. Like the others, he explained that he had been renewing his mandatory $35 permit each year, but forgot this year because he didn’t receive the city’s usual courtesy reminder.

Like each of the others, he was told that it was no excuse. The rules are the rules.

Revenue – Tax Bicycles

(desmoinesregister.com)

I paid a bike license fee when P.G. collected them. Sounds good, eh?

Does the bicyclist have to pass driver exams and pay fees to learn to drive safely? Does he pay taxes and fees for license plates and vehicle registration? Trucking fees are very expensive. Does he pay high fuel taxes intended for repairs and building roads? What expense does the bicyclist have except maybe a small sales tax on his bicycle?

Revenue – Alcohol Taxes

The country voted for change right?

Beall’s (D-San Jose)plan would generate about $1.4 billion a year, with the money going toward alcohol- and drug-related programs. He and other supporters noted at a Capitol news conference Monday that California’s alcohol taxes haven’t been raised since 1991. Backers also said it’s time for the industry to bear more of the costs it imposes on society — including drunken driving accidents, alcoholism and other problems.
