Store Sues Over Bus Shelter

Carpet store needs to follow the other shop’s lead and put up some signs, like under them lights where Rabo Bank used to have a sign. Or are they just planning to have some more long running out of business sales?

Anothe Rug Sale

In June 2012, Torabbagi and Torabbeigi signed a multi-year lease to open up their rug store in the former Rabobank building at the corner of Lighthouse and Hoffman avenues. Shortly thereafter, they hired architects and contractors to make structural changes for the store, including installing a large plate glass window facing Lighthouse intended to display their imported rugs.

But in October 2012, a month after the renovation at the rug store commenced, “without any prior notice” from MST or the City of Monterey, crews began tearing up the sidewalk to install a bus shelter in front of their store — part of a larger $5 million MST bus stop and rebranding effort, which included wrapping numerous buses with jazz-themed displays. Money for the improvements came from U.S. taxpayers.

Mayor Garcia With Robbers Hat

Police said late Friday the woman believed to be the “Central Coast Bandit” has been apprehended and is in FBI custody after crashing her car in Paso Robles on Friday.

San Luis Obispo police Lt. Bill Proll said the woman, possibly a resident of the Watsonville area, fled from a local bank and was chased by California Highway Patrol officers as she raced north on Highway 101.

Proll said that the incident that led to her arrest began shortly before 6 p.m. Friday, as a woman appeared ready to rob a Golden One Credit Union in San Luis Obispo.
“An alert bank employee called police before she tried to do the robbery,” Proll said.

He said San Luis Obispo police responded but decided chasing the woman’s vehicle across city streets would be too dangerous, especially “since nothing happened in the bank.”

But they alerted CHP officers, who pursued the woman on the 30-mile chase to Paso Robles, where her vehicle crashed and she was arrested, he said.

As of late Friday, she was in FBI custody, Proll said, who added he was confident police have the right woman.

Feast Of Lanterns Keeping Secrets?

There were fireworks of course, but the first rule of Feast Of Lanterns is you don’t mention the fireworks.

Second rule is don’t hang the Feast Of Lanterns banners from the streetlights.
Taken July 27:
No FOL Banner

The Mon Sori percussionists, a group of local people with Korean heritage, were just one of many attractions at the Feast of Lanterns, which drew more than 1,000 people by 2 p.m.

Although the lantern-adorned vessels and fireworks gathered bigger crowds later in the day, afternoon crowds could not seem to stay away from the Chinese-inspired event.

Music constantly played as the smell of burnt food filled the air, children ran in the water and made sandcastles, impromptu volleyball games were constant, inflatable bounce houses wore out the kids and a bashful sun kept the temperature around 65 degrees.

“The nice thing is the whole city does something,” said Virginia Coleman, a longtime volunteer.

The event was first held in 1905 but did not become an annual festival until 1957. Coleman said she and her husband understand the appeal, having been involved since 1985.

New Monterey Record Store Moves To P.G.

Will be at 309 Forest Ave, the location of a long string of failed boring art galleries.

Add to the list of stupid things Moe says: “Vinyl Revolution will shake up Pacific Grove.”

Gamber will close his Lighthouse Avenue store July 22. He said he had to move because it was difficult for his new landlord, developer Carl Outzen, to get insurance for the dilapidated building.

Gamber acknowledged he will miss out on foot traffic from the Cannery Row area, but hopes to tap into a different dynamic in Pacific Grove.

“Since there’s no record store there,” he said, “I think the people in that area will appreciate it.”

He said he is aiming for another 20 years in Pacific Grove.

Frank Sunset

According to the Monterey Fire Department, the diver reportedly went missing into the bay around 11 Sunday morning. Authorities say the diver’s truck is parked at the San Carlos Beach parking lot. Officials say they found a flashlight in the water, but it’s unknown if it belongs to the missing man

June 21 – Body of diver recovered from beach

The Monterey County Coroner’s Office has been called to San Carlos Beach to retrieve a drowning victim who may be the diver reported missing Sunday night.

“To be honest, I don’t know how anybody would be able to make an ID that quickly. I don’t know the condition of the body,” said Sonne, who had just spoken with a sergeant at the scene who reported the coroner had just arrived.

The drowning victim was discovered by other divers floating in a kelp bed about 30 yards off shore Friday morning. Sonne said he was in diving gear, minus his tanks.

The family of a Marin County man reported him missing Sunday night. Police found his car parked at San Carlos Beach and his flashlight underwater, but could not locate him and called off the search Monday.

June 24 – Lone diver dies at Breakwater Cove

Albert Reed MacKay, 43, of Yuba City, Calif., was diving about 25 feet underwater when something went wrong.

Nearby divers found MacKay, pulled him up to the surface, dragged him out of the ocean, and started CPR at 3:30 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
