P.G. Man Robs Nob Hill

Internet searching indicates a Ryan Curry is a Pacific Grove painting contractor.

Ryan Curry, 34, was taken into custody about 9 p.m. outside Nob Hill Foods, 900 Lighthouse Ave., said police Sgt. Aaron Delgado.

Police responded to a report of a man with a gun, but the suspect didn’t have a weapon, Delgado said. While in the store, the man evidently said he had a weapon or indicated he had one under his clothing, Delgado said.

People scurried from the store during the incident, Delgado said.

All police found on the man was a bottle of alcohol and food, he said. Curry was arrested on a shoplifting charge

Alcohol Bans And Curfews At DLI

The Army told its students at the school Monday they now have a 9 p.m. curfew and are forbidden from drinking alcohol, Presidio of Monterey spokesman Dan Carpenter said.

The curfew will be for students on and off campus and enforced, in part, through random in-person checks.

“It’s the Army getting serious about changing behavior,” Carpenter said.

The program was implemented as part of the Army’s effort to crackdown on sexual assaults, he said.

Carpenter said he did not have the number of sexual assaults that have taken place at the school.

“It’s not a high number,” he said.

But over on the rec trail in 2001 a couple of Marines nearly killed a woman.

Held on in tough times for 5 years. Was the foolish MST project a contributor to the final straw?

Searls

The nail in the coffin for Searle, he said, was the construction of Monterey-Salinas Transit’s JAZZ line bus stops last year. He said snarled traffic kept customers away.

MST general manager Carl Sedoryk said Monday afternoon they never heard from Wiseman during construction and noted Searle has its own parking lot and no construction took place in front of it.

He did say, however, that traffic was likely backed up in front of Wiseman’s store.

“I’m sorry to see such a long-standing member of the retail community has not been able to make it,” Sedoryk said. “I’m not certain what role though our project, if any, really had on that decision.”

Sedoryk said no claims against the transit district had been filed by Lighthouse Avenue businesses.

Bus Stops Hurting Business

Traffic too. Now when a bus stops at one of those new jazzy stops it blocks the right lane.

Monterey-Salinas Transit began construction on the new Jazz line last June and for several months it closed lanes on Lighthouse Avenue. Carbone said it was a nightmare for his customers.

“There were a couple of days where I, personally, I cant speak for the other businesses, literally had two customers in my establishments,” he said. “Two people all day long.”

Carbone said he plans to fight to help all the businesses in the area. “They say it’s over and it’s not over. It’s over when I say it’s over,” he said.

Colossus Of . . . Bronze?

Statue of John Steinbeck coming to Cannery Row

The Cannery Row Co., which has already won preliminary approval for the sculpture in Steinbeck Plaza, returns to the city Architectural Review Committee on Wednesday for a final review.

The proposed statue would be about 14 feet high, with near life-sized figures seated at various levels around the simulated granite rock. The rock would be fashioned out of molded gunite.

COG At Home

What would Colossus Of Gold Have to say, would he raise his arm (if it were attached) and beg to be part of the sculpture?
