$7.8 Million School Bonds For P.G.

More busy work for DMC Construction I reckon. Another stadium and two more parking lots should take care of that.

The Pacific Grove Unified School District will receive $7.8 million in federal Qualified School Construction Bond tax credits, according to the state Department of Education.

These provide federal tax credits in lieu of interest to lenders who purchase bonds from the chosen schools. As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the selected districts also have the option to receive a direct cash subsidy payment from the Treasury.

Possible change of venue?

Judge Timothy Buckley granted Pollacci’s attorney, Michelle Wouden, documents that had been subpoenaed from The Herald, the Salinas Californian, the Monterey County Weekly, the Carmel Pine Cone and the Pacific Grove Hometown Bulletin, as well as electronic media from KION News Channel 46 and KWAV 97-FM radio.

Deborah King Trial: Son Of Victim Will Testify

PGMS J Woods Flowers

Jurors in the trial of a Monterey woman charged with murder in the vehicular death of a Pacific Grove father will hear a first-person account of the accident from the victim’s 15-year-old son.

The prosecutor and defense attorney agreed to let Jacob Woods, who is mildly autistic, testify by videotape to spare him the pain of attending the trial of Deborah King.

The road to that trial has veered five times since 2008, as psychiatrists evaluated King’s competency to assist in her own defense. In 2009, she spent nine months in a state mental hospital before a final evaluation deemed her ready for trial.

The road to the trial has veered? Is that appropriate for the story of an alleged DUI careening into a father & child?

The exhibition also will use cougar life-mounts and skeletons, research tools and wildlife photography to tell the story of how mountain lions and humans co-exist.

The museum is seeking mountain lion photos and stories from the community. If you have a story or photo to share, contact exhibitions curator Annie Holdren at holdren@pgmuseum.org.

Poor, Poor New Monterey Alarmed At DLI Expansion Plans

Howard looks at increasing numbers of DLI students as a bad thing? In a part of town where newly built storefronts sit empty next to storefronts that have been empty for years.

New Monterey is “the largest community in Monterey, and the most isolated,” said Howard Fosler, president of the New Monterey Neighborhood Association, as he opened a meeting Monday night at Hilltop Center to talk about issues facing the area.

The Presidio of Monterey sprawls between the old and new city, and with its gates closed since 2001 to public traffic, has increased the isolation of the neighborhood.

An increase in the student population will drive up rental costs in the area as military men and women seek off-base housing, Fosler said, and more students means more traffic.

Holmans Jewelry Heist

Police in Pacific Grove arrested two brothers from Corral de Tierra on Friday who are suspected of jewelry heists on Lighthouse Avenue.

Cmdr. John Miller said Zachary and Joseph Thomas, 24 and 23, were arrested at the Pacific Grove Police Department Friday afternoon and were later transferred to county jail for booking.

Miller said the brothers walked into Holman’s Antique Plaza on Monday. One asked to try on a gold necklace, and while the other distracted an employee, the first walked out of the building wearing the jewelry.

Pacific Grove police sent out an “alert flier” to local police agencies, and Seaside officers recognized the brothers from “previous contacts,” Miller said. An officer called the men’s parents, he said, because officers did not have phone numbers for either suspect. The parents contacted the brothers and persuaded them to turn themselves in, Miller said.

Lovers Point Grill Rent Dropped During Construction

Now where will visitors be able to taste our famous tap water served ‘proper’?

Dollar Water

Approved unanimously were amendments to a contract to operate the Lovers Point Grill, $30,000 for asbestos removal at the Old Bathhouse building at Lovers Point, and $13,500 to replace the City Hall clock tower chimes.

And they took Bindel off the lease. From the city’s web site they say needs to be replaced..

SECTION 2. The Agreement (Agreement) between the City and Cavallaro Limited Partnerships and David R. Bindel to lease and operate the property known as the Grill at Lovers Point executed on December 5, 2002, shall be modified to remove David R. Bindel as a party to the agreement.

SECTION 3. Due to planned construction at Lovers Point Park, business shall not be conducted and the Agreement shall be modified so that no rent shall be due for the period of January 1, 2011 through a date of written notice to be issued by the City that business may recommence following construction.

Seals At Hopkins

The number of elephant seals on Hopkins beaches peaks during spring molting season and in the fall. The fall seals are mostly young males that are probably avoiding mature males at the larger breeding rookeries, Pearse said.

During mating season, male elephant seals, called bulls, engage in fierce fights for territory and access to a harem of females.

In November, Akeman observed a large bull at Hopkins chase, mount and bloody a female seal before she escaped into the water. The frustrated lover later tried to mount younger male elephant seals on the beach and chased some harbor seals away.

The bully bull seal needs a name, lets call him Tomm.

Moe Ammar Dont Buy American

Make sure businesses are ready for major events that come to Pacific Grove. Refer visitors to events, places and businesses in town. Emphasize environmentally friendly events.

“Now we know who is in charge of what. We’ve met each other. Now we’ve got to work together,” chamber president Moe Ammar said after the two-hour meeting, which had a 27-member panel and 40 people in the audience. The panel included people from the hospitality industry, arts community and city officials.

Ammar, who has led the chamber for 18 years, said he holds the gatherings when the economy slips. The last such event was 10 years ago.

He last held any marketing summit a decade ago and has not noticed the economy since then? The best idea I think is to find a new Chamber Of Commerce leader.

As people described their organization’s events, Frutchey said there were some festivities he wasn’t aware of and suggested a master calendar for Pacific Grove events.

Great, we have a come-here City Manager that does not know about the quirky civic events in P.G., or what resources to turn to and find out.

It is the economy. Need to emphasize value for the dollar, which admittedly P.G. has very little of.

Bar & Nighttime Parties Coming To Golf Clubhouse?

PG Golf Parking
When the grave yard Clubhouse was pushed on the taxpayers we were told there would not be hard liquor or evening operation. I’m shocked, shocked that the city would ever turn on the residents and do such a thing.

The city is proposing the use permit for the $4million golf clubhouse at 79 Asilomar Ave. be amended to allow it to operate 6a.m. to 9p.m. rather than the current dawn-to-dusk schedule, allow the club restaurant to serve liquor as well as beer and wine, provide amplified music and erect light fixtures in the parking lot and along walkways.

Former Councilwoman Susan Goldbeck told the council the proposals fly in the face of promises made to neighbors when the clubhouse project was approved in 2003.
