On Aug. 12 shortly before 1 a.m., Sgt. Chris Johnson saw a silver Boxster make an illegal left turn out of the Crossroads shopping center onto Rio Road, and when Johnson pulled the car over on northbound on Highway 1, the driver initially stopped. But as Johnson walked toward the Porsche, “the driver — later identified as Eric Miskey —
revved the engine, shifted the vehicle into gear and sped away,”

24 hours later, when a Pacific Grove officer saw the Boxster in a no-parking area on Ocean View Boulevard “with a guy asleep inside,” at around 12:25 a.m.

But instead of acquiescing, Miskey again tried to escape, according to Lakind. Before he could get away, one of the officers was “able to get into the vehicle and put  it in park,” Lakind said. And, using “control techniques,” the officers were able to get him  out of the car. Nobody was injured, he said. PGPD turned Miskey over to a Carmel police officer, who took him to Monterey County Jail

“We are excited to introduce Andronico’s Community Markets to the Monterey community,” Safeway spokeswoman Wendy Gutshall told The Pine Cone Wednesday.

Andronico’s — which is supposed to be open in the former Nob Hill spot by Thanksgiving — was a small San Francisco Bay Area chain that Frank Andronico, a native of Greece, opened in 1929 in Berkeley. While it once had nine locations,
it fell on hard times, and Safeway purchased its remaining stores, and now it plans to open one here.

Assemblymember Mark Stone — whose district includes Pacific Grove’s Monarch Sanctuary — is pushing a bill, AB 2421, to protect the iconic black and orange insects. “As monarch butterfly populations decline, ecosystems across our state are at risk of collapse,” said Stone, who introduced the bill in February. “This measure provides grants and support to preserve and restore monarch and other pollinator habitats.

Then we see what it really is. Looks like another tax and spend project.

The bill would establish the Monarch and Pollinator Rescue Program, which would be overseen by the California Wildlife Conservation Board. The program would offer grants to farmers, ranchers, nonprofits and public agencies to pay for habitat restoration projects throughout the state.

A man who set out to paddle his kayak from Monterey to Hawaii failed to make it more than a few miles, only to have his kayak overturned in rough seas near Asilomar Beach Tuesday morning.
The 60-year-old unidentified man was unconscious and not breathing as rescuers performed CPR on him at around 7:15 a.m., Cal Fire Battalion Chief Mike Meddles told The Pine Cone.
