DUI Causes Major Injuries To Monterey Man

And the man charged with DUI was not the injured one…

A Monterey man was seriously injured after his vehicle was hit head-on by a man suspected of driving under the influence Wednesday night, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Officers said Lance Millington, 55, was taken to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula with major injuries after his vehicle was hit just after 10 p.m. on Holman Highway, west of Scenic Drive.

William Boyd, 55, of Monterey lost control of his eastbound vehicle and swerved into the opposing lane, officers said, striking Millington’s vehicle, which left the roadway and went down a 10-foot embankment.

Boyd was arrested and charged with DUI causing injuries.

DUI Laws as they should be:
First offense – Drivers’ license suspended for life. Vehicle impounded. Can never own a car or get insurance for life. Fine equal to 2 years wages.
Second offense – enabler that gave drunk a car loses the car. Another fine – same rate PLUS add the same fine to the enabler.
Third offense – 10 years in jail.

Lillian King’s Niece Pleads No Contest

Cynthia Hurley pleaded no contest Thursday to stealing close to $1 million worth of valuable coins and jewelry from her 98-year-old great aunt.

An agitated Hurley, appeared reluctant but waived her right to a jury trial and admitted one count of elder financial abuse.

She will be sentenced to one year in jail and three years probation as part of the agreement. The plea bargain requires her to sign over her 30 percent interest in four Pacific Grove properties to reimburse Lillian King for her losses.

“I am hurt and I’m sad because my niece just threw her life away and she could have had a lovely one,” said King.

What About Mass Transit That Works?

Remember the Mini-Monarch? When the slow, limited JPA bus system could not serve PG, the town made it’s own. It was well routed and covered most of the busy parts of town.

I would use a transit system like that, cheap reliable and nearby. Run up and down Forest Avenue. You’d be within a mile of nearly all businesses and schools. Merchants could give tokens or coupons on the back of receipts. Keep people in town, keep the SUV parked, get out and meet the neighbors.

Susan Goldbeck’s Computer Stolen

Goldbeck reports she has had a $3500 laptop computer containing important information, stolen from her home.

She reported to police that someone entered her unlocked residence Tuesday and removed her laptop computer. No other items were disturbed or taken. The Pacific Grove police department says the case is being investigated.

Wonder if any REAL important information was on that laptop – we’ve heard stories about personal information being exposed when entrusted individuals lose computers.

Flustered P.G. City Arborist Quits

Ronald Blecha, who had been on the job less than two months, abruptly resigned last week citing a lack of funds to do the job properly and “the abundance of experts” on trees in the city, according to an e-mail sent to the City Council from City Manager Jim Colangelo.

Colangelo said the resignation was unexpected and that there were no signs Blecha was unhappy during a follow-up meeting with the Public Works Department on Thursday.

Who’s an expert?

City Council candidate David Dilworth said he was concerned about the cutting of trees.

“What was essentially presented to you was a forest-cutting plan, not a forest sustainability plan,” Dilworth said. “We are standing on the threshold of losing the forest.”

Ah – that expert.
