Pacific Grove police said a boy reported that a man tried to lure him into a car Wednesday by offering him candy.
The incident happened about 4:30 p.m. near Robert Down School when a man in a blue two-door Honda Civic pulled up alongside the child. The boy ran to the school office and police were called.
Officers said they searched the area but were unable to find the car or the man. The man is described as about 40 years old with black spiked hair and a goatee.

Another Accused Of Child Molesting Goes To Trial

Sunny Pappu Kavil, 43, is charged with child molestation, assault and sexual battery. He pleaded not guilty to all counts and was released on $100,000 bail. At his preliminary examination, a judge ruled that there was enough evidence to warrant a jury trial.
On May 19, 2007, a then-16-year-old girl was working at Sunnyline Clothing, a store owned by Kavil in the city of Pacific Grove, near Monterey, according to court documents. Though the girl had only been working in the store two days, she had on multiple occasions felt uncomfortable with Kavil, Pacific Grove police officer Angelo DeMarco testified in a preliminary hearing held Nov. 5, 2007.
“Mr. Kavil, in the short time that she worked there, had given her free underwear, and told her to go ahead and take it home, that she didn’t have to pay for it,” he said. “When she returned to work, Mr. Kavil asked her how the underwear looked or felt on her.’

On the witness stand, Stamm said he had sex with the alleged victim on at least four occasions, but he said it was consensual and only happened after the alleged victim turned 18.
Stamm said that story started going around town and that’s when he offered to pay the alleged victim $5,000 to recant.
Stamm said he’s gay and he hid his homosexuality because if it got out he feared it would ruin a batting cages business he once owned.

Police arrested a San Jose high school teacher Tuesday afternoon on suspicion he tried to arrange a meeting with a teenage girl he’d met on the Internet.The 13-year-old girl was actually a Santa Cruz police detective.
Police said James Barany, 37, initiated a chat room conversation with the girl and during the course of the conversation, he agreed to meet the girl at a location in Santa Cruz. Police did not disclose where the meeting occurred or how long Barany had allegedly been conversing with the girl. Police also would not disclose what high school he worked at, but a secretary at Overfelt High School in San Jose confirmed Barany is the school’s band director. The principal there referred all calls to East Side Union High School District Superintendent Bob Nuñez, who did not return phone calls seeking comment.
Stamm Verdict – Mistrial, Hung Jury
David Stamm faced 10 counts of crimes related to a child. In deliberations since last Thursday, the jury did not reach a verdict in charges dealing with lewd acts on a child, including oral sex, dissuading a witness, and possessing child porn.
The jury did, however, decide that Stamm was not guilty on one charge of oral sex with a child under the age of 18. The Monterey County District Attorney’s office said more jurors were leaning toward guilty than not guilty on the other nine counts.

The teacher, Craig Dinwiddie, 52, of Gonzales was arrested on seven counts of possession of child pornography, two counts of distributing child pornography, two counts of annoying or molesting children and possession of marijuana, police Chief Paul Miller said.

Pacific Grove police searched Stamm’s home and seized a laptop after Doe went to authorities in 2007. With the help of a forensic computer expert at the Salinas Police Department, Pesenhofer said, they learned that Stamm used a program called Evidence Eliminator to scrub files from the computer on June 12, 2007.
Despite efforts to erase files from the computer, Pesenhofer said, police found several pornographic photos of teenage boys and a video of two young male teens performing oral sex.
David Stamm’s Trial Set For July 14
He is charged with 13 felony counts of child molestation and possession of child pornography related to alleged activities with a former employee.
The alleged victim told police he was molested by Stamm from 1999, when he was 14, to 2002. The defense has argued that the alleged victim’s accounts are not believable.
Ex-sheriff’s Recruit Accused In New Monterey
A former Monterey County sheriff’s recruit pleaded not guilty this week to charges of rape and sodomy of an unconscious victim. Chad Michael Neuman, 38, was arrested Feb. 23 at his apartment in New Monterey after a woman told Monterey police he assaulted her in her home.
The woman told police she met Neuman the night before at Segovia’s bar on Lighthouse Avenue, said Deputy Chief Phil Penko. The two drank together and then went to the woman’s house, he said.
At some point, the woman victim said, she fell asleep. When she awoke, the woman told police, she found Neuman on top of her attempting to sexually assault her. “In colorful terms, she told him to get out,” Penko said. “He got his stuff and left.”
