Mysterious Beings Vandalize Golf Course

“It’s generally a cart or a truck doing donuts. This is pretty weird because it’s obviously not a vehicle,” police Cmdr. Tom Uretzky said. “It’s just a bunch of holes.”

Golf course Superintendent Mike Leach called it the worst vandalism he’s seen.

“Someone has physically just beaten the heck out of a $30,000 green,” he said. “It was as if someone took a roto-tiller to (it).”

Pacific Grove’s golf course and several others, including the Monterey Peninsula Country Club, were also the target of pranksters six weeks ago, but those capers weren’t nearly as damaging as Monday night’s big dig, Leach said.

P.G. Explores Contracting Golf Jobs

Administrators want the golf course to seek maintenance proposals from private companies, an action that could put 10 employees out of their jobs.

Eight of the employees are union members who must be offered other city jobs.

City Manager Jim Colangelo said he believes it’s unlikely a private company could provide the same quality of services at the course for less money, but he wants to provide residents — who may be asked to vote for a tax increase in November to bail the city out of financial difficulties — with a clear analysis.

Would they take a pay cut or decert? Nahhh.

The Fleecing Of The Golf Fans

The Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce will likewise host shuttle services to bring visitors into town and encourage them to linger. Last year, it transported more than 2,500.

Of the 1,110 guest rooms in Pacific Grove, all but 102 had been sold as of Friday afternoon, which is about the same as the past two years, Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce President Moe Ammar said.

Ammar said the impact of the AT&T goes beyond the event itself, as fans who enjoyed their time on the Peninsula later return to the area with family and friends.

Limiting snacks
We can understand the security reasons for limiting the size of bag people were allowed to bring to the AT&T golf tournament. However, we were turned away at the bus in Fort Ord for having snacks and water inside our bag that was smaller than the size limitation….

I guess last year was our last visit to the AT&T.

Ex-Mayor Morrie Fisher Sues For Free Golf

Old golfers

Morrie Fisher has sued the city he once led, claiming the city unfairly took away his lifetime privilege to play golf for free on the city’s links.

Fisher says he was promised unlimited play on the city’s municipal course when he first left the council in 1991, according to the lawsuit filed in Monterey Superior Court last week.

Even if he was a retired, full-time employee, said city attorney David Laredo, the city’s policy doesn’t grant lifetime free golf privileges, nor does it give a city manager the authority to allow unlimited golf play. Green fees at the Pacific Grove Golf Links are now as much as $40, depending on the day.

“I don’t believe there is any basis in fact or in law for the benefit that he claims,” Laredo said

Or as Snick says (in a Clint Eastwood impersonation): “The only way for an ex-mayor get free golf is to buy the golf course!”

How To Pay Back The Golf Fund

Pacific Grove city staff members will be looking for ways to repay more than $1 million taken from the city’s golf enterprise fund during the past several years that was moved to three other city funds.

The City Council’s decision late Wednesday was based on a partially completed audit released by the Harvey Rose Accountancy Corp. earlier this month.

The auditors found that all money in each of the city’s 24 funds was accounted for. But it showed that several inter-fund loans were made without the consent or knowledge of past councils, and without proper documentation, including the transfer of more than $1 million from the city’s golf course enterprise fund to its sewer service, workers’ compensation and Chautauqua Hall funds.

Well some suggestions I’ve heard:
More metered parking.
Turn the shoreline into an RV park.
Nude 2007 City Council Calendars.
Tax churches.
Tax real estate transfers.

Golf Money Loaned To Other PG Funds In 2003

More than $1 million was transferred from Pacific Grove’s golf enterprise fund to three other city funds, according to a partial audit report released this month.

Among other issues, the report by the Harvey Rose Accountancy Corp. focused on fund-to-fund loans, specifically more than $1 million of golf course enterprise money loaned to three other city funds as of June 30, 2003.

Hear-old reported it as 2005 – a serious error.

P.G. Proposes To Run Golf Clubhouse

Before Wednesday’s meeting, City Manager Jim Colangelo said Pacific Grove was in a win-win situation because it couldn’t lose money.

“The concessionaire is not interested in extending the lease, and we are looking at this as an opportunity for the city to pick up additional revenue,” he said.

“This is an opportunity for the city to be able to look at how we can improve our service to the public and to the citizens of Pacific Grove,” said Leach.

Under the new management structure, the position of superintendent will also include the title director of golf. The city will hire eight maintenance workers and four part-time workers.

The proposal left Schenk skeptical.

If you already have the overhead in place to hire/train/pay an employee base, why not?
