Stillwell’s Snow In The Park For The Last Time?

Businesses that contribute have been shuttered, all we have left are bistros and art galleries. Shows how much they give back to the town. Moe needs to go.

The annual Stillwell’s Snow in the Park event — scheduled from 10a.m. to 4p.m. Dec. 6 — has been a holiday tradition in the city for the past 15 years.

But the cost of putting it on keeps rising, said Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce President Moe Ammar, and has gone from $4,500 in 1994 to $12,000 this year.

Ammar said the chamber has $7,000 at present. Businesses in the city that normally contribute to Snow in the Park haven’t been as forthcoming this year, he said, because of the economic downturn. If the donations fall short, the event will be canceled next year.

A fixture in the neighborhood has been a giant robot constructed by retired Pacific Grove Fire Capt. Howard Cowen that used to grace the city fire station’s front lawn. The robot wore a firefighter’s hat and turnout gear when it was displayed at the fire station. Now it greets visitors on Cowen’s front lawn at Beaumont and McFarland avenues, reincarnated as a giant toy soldier.

Spouting propaganda about “light pollution” in large cities masking out the twinkling stars at night. Makes about as much sense in foggy P.G. as solar heat. You’d think he’d bring this up in the fall or spring when the skies are not fogged in or filled with storm clouds. But no, he tries to make you feel guilty for having Christmas lights up. Guilty for admiring Candy Cane Lane, as if it was killing of otters or causing monarchs to go sterile.

I used to think Dil was just another kook. Now I think he is just another America hater. I’m going to Walmart and buying a few hundred C7s on strings for the yard, eaves, trees and whatever else needs to be Christmasy.

What’s with all the X-Mas lights staying up all year round?

They are everywhere – Holman Building, Victorian Corner, PG Nutrition, PG Plaza, 17th Street Grill, Monte Cafe, etc. While they may communicate some hint of a business being open, THEY LOOK LIKE JUNK AND ARE UNSAFE. You leave those up in the open air and sunlight the insulation will soon crack and expose 110 volts.
