DOJ and OES Come To Town

Welcome the TLA agents
US Marshals

“We are (guarding the area) now,” said one U.S. Marshall staffed at a Sinex Avenue entrance into the quarantined area of the conference center. The U.S. Marshall asked that his name not be used because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Behind the U.S. Marshals, staff from the California Office of Emergency Services wearing bright orange gloves were working on a staging area for individuals being brought in or out of the makeshift facility. Crocker Avenue between Sinex Avenue and Sunset Drive has been closed to traffic. Crocker borders the quarantine area.

Coronavirus Comes To P.G.

Cruise ship passengers will be quarantined at Asilomar Conference Grounds. Nothing to help a speedy recovery more than being stuck there.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that Monterey County would house some of the evacuated passengers from the Grand Princess cruise ship that tested positive for coronavirus.

According to Monterey County District Supervisor Chris Lopez, the handful of passengers coming to the county would be quarantined at Asilomar Hotel & Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove.

Monterey County District Supervisor Mary Adams who represents that part of the county, said four to eight people are expected to be housed at the hotel. The hotel was selected because it meets all of CDC’s guidelines for quarantine.

Ecofarmers Ecomeet At Ecosilomar

Sounds scary. Are they set up to take away farms from white farmers and kill them?

The Ecological Farming Association (EcoFarm) is a nonprofit educational organization whose mission since 1981 is to promote health, social justice and ecologically sustainable farms. Noting the often lack of diversity among the presenters, EcoFarm four years ago formed a diversity advisory committee to address the problem.

Fireworks Come Early

For those who love the smell of red phosphorus in the morning.

Pacific Grove Police said that the live red phosphorus U.S. military marine locater flare was found near Asilomar near and the 1400 block of Sunset Drive. After securing the area, the police notified the Monterey County Bomb Squad, who in turn contacted the Department of Defense Bomb Squad at Travis.

The bomb squad used explosives to blow up the device, which is used for military search and rescue operations and
drills.

Making Asilomar More Accessible

Funded by fees on those whale tail license plates.

That’s thanks to a grant from the California Coastal Commission, which was used to purchase a sand-friendly beach wheelchair and beach walker for disabled visitors to the beach and Conference Grounds.

“I think this site is a really good place for that money to be spent because we have so many people staying here because of the conference grounds,” said Lisa Bradford, an interpreter there who handles tours and educational programs. “There’s a built-in audience here.”

Bradford applied for the grant money that purchased the new equipment. Funding in the amount of $3,470 paid for both the wheelchair and walker and came out of the Coastal Commission’s Whale Tail Grants Program, which distributes money for programs that educate about the value of coastal resources.

Surfer Rescues Kayaker At Asilomar

Tyler Scheid from Carmel is the hero.

As Scheid paddled out, the kayaker tried to reach shore but the kayak capsized. Scheid said he paddled over to the man, got him on his surfboard and paddled to shore.

Scheid said the man told him he had been out on the water overnight because he couldn’t make it through the surf to shore. Fire department personnel gave him aid. Scheid said the man was hypothermic and dehydrated.

Sheriff’s Son Arrested Again

Sheriff Scott Miller’s son was arrested by probation officers on Tuesday in Pacific Grove after he allegedly stole “well over $1,000” in goods from Asilomar Conference Grounds, State Parks officials said.

Asilomar superintendent Eric Abma said Jacob Miller, who is in Monterey County Jail, stole phones, iPads, at least one laptop, and a “couple” of purses on Thursday and Friday.

Abma said he could not specify where the items were stolen from or if they were taken from people attending a conference.

Asilomar Conference Grounds Getting Upgrades

Asilomar Gardens
Six Flags Over Asilomar failed to be approved again.

Operators of the Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove are in the middle of a $20.5 million upgrade and a major component of it should be completed by May.

. freshly-paved roads and new handrails . . part of the improvements are free WiFi, fire pits and the return of a pingpong table on the deck of the social hall.

Whoah, getting kind of risky there with that wi-fi stuff. I think there are two telephones and no TV sets in the entire place.

Union Disturbs Peace In Name Of What?

Last round the workers got 90 cents an hour over the term of the contract.

Union Work

scores of union members armed with whistles, drums, placards, megaphones and leafets shouted bilingual phrases and taunts as they circled the historic center. They were not pleased with concessionaire Aramark’s proposal for a five year freeze on wages! This action, if implemented, would keep the pay of Asilomar’s house keeping employees at $12.74 an hour until 2016!

Aramark Gets Asilomar Deal

Wonder if they can kick out the 483 union?

Aramark Parks & Destinations will officially take over operation of Asilomar Conference Grounds on Sept. 14, said an executive of the company it is replacing.

General Manager Patrick Sheridan of Delaware North Companies Parks & Resorts, which has operated Asilomar for the past 10 years, said DNC had unsuccessfully challenged the award. Aramark was the only other bidder on the contract, said Roy Stearns of State Parks.

DNC has about 240 employees working at Asilomar, Sheridan said, and Aramark has committed to retaining as many of them as possible. Operations through this summer will be “business as usual,” he said, as DNC and Aramark negotiate the transition.
